Square Enix canceled Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link on May 14, 2025, before the mobile game launched. The team said it could not confidently provide a service players would find satisfying over the long term. The series is continuing: Kingdom Hearts IV is scheduled for late 2027, and the KINGDOM HEARTS Collection [I~III] releases today, October 8, 2026.
Why was Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link canceled?
Missing-Link was announced as a GPS-based action RPG for iOS and Android, but Square Enix canceled development before its service began. In the development team’s May 14, 2025 statement, it said that despite working to develop and adjust the game, it had concluded it would be difficult to offer “a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time.” Gematsu reproduces the announcement in full.

The team apologized to people who had been looking forward to the game and thanked players who supported its closed beta tests. The announced reason was the challenge of sustaining a satisfying long-running service; Square Enix did not cite a technical failure or licensing problem.
What is the silver lining for Kingdom Hearts fans?
Kingdom Hearts IV is scheduled for late 2027
Square Enix’s August 16, 2026 announcement set a late-2027 release window for Kingdom Hearts IV. The publisher describes a story following Sora and familiar characters through Quadratum and worlds inspired by Disney and Pixar. Donald Duck and Goofy are among the returning characters, and the announcement says players will also be able to play as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and Goofy as they seek information about Sora. The announced platforms are Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. These are publisher-announced plans, not a guarantee that the schedule or platforms cannot change. Square Enix did not say that Missing-Link was canceled to move staff, funding, or other resources to Kingdom Hearts IV. Its cancellation announcement said the series would continue and that the team was working on the next game, but that is not evidence of a causal link between the projects. GameSpot’s contemporaneous report noted that Missing-Link had previously been described as connecting to Kingdom Hearts IV; how that connection would work, or whether it would remain, was unclear. There is no confirmed basis to expect the canceled game’s story or characters to appear in Kingdom Hearts IV.
