A group can use eligible 2014 material in a campaign using the 2024 rules, but the two versions are not interchangeable in every combination. Agree on one rules baseline, then decide which older options are allowed and which version governs revised subclasses, spells, and class features. If your group prefers the 2014 rules, buying the 2024 Player’s Handbook is optional.
What “2014 rules” and “2024 rules” mean
D&D Beyond describes the 2024 core books as revising fifth edition, updating classes, spells, and monster stat blocks. Its official changelog says players retain access to 2014 rules and books. In a March 2, 2026 labeling update, D&D Beyond designated 2014 content as “5e” and 2024 updated content as “5.5e,” calling this a clarity update rather than a new edition. The post says: “This is a clarity update only—no rules, purchases, or gameplay are changing.”

Because players and publishers may use “5e” and “5.5e” inconsistently, use the year labels in campaign notes and character discussions. On D&D Beyond, both versions remain supported; its changelog also says the 2014 Basic Rules and owned 2014 core books remain available.
How to decide what your table will use
Choose a default rules version before characters are built. The official compatibility examples show why: some older options can work with revised classes, while others cannot be combined with their updated counterparts.

- DESIGNED JUST FOR YOU—We’ve thoughtfully redesigned this book with an improved layout, better organization, and an alphabetized Rules Glossary. Find whatever you’re looking for with ease
- Pick the campaign baseline. Decide whether characters use 2014 or 2024 class rules by default.
- Set a policy for legacy options. Say whether players may choose eligible 2014 subclasses or other older material when using the 2024 baseline.
- Specify the version for revised choices. Clarify which spell list and class progression apply, and whether an older option has been replaced by a 2024 version.
- Agree how to handle unaddressed combinations. If official guidance does not cover a specific interaction, the DM should make a ruling and explain it to everyone before character choices depend on it.
This is a practical table policy, not a rule mandated by Wizards of the Coast. A mixed-version game can involve more decisions than choosing one baseline, so consider how much rules coordination your group wants.
What the official compatibility examples allow—and restrict
D&D Beyond’s examples are more useful than assuming every older option works unchanged. They illustrate these distinctions:

| Character or option | What the example says |
|---|---|
| 2024 Cleric with the 2014 Knowledge Domain | Permitted if that subclass has not been replaced by a 2024 counterpart; subclass features follow the 2024 Cleric progression. |
| Older subclass updated for the 2024 Player’s Handbook | Not usable with the 2024 version of that class. D&D Beyond’s changelog states: “However, if an older subclass was updated for the 2024 Player’s Handbook, that subclass will not be useable with the 2024 class.” |
| 2014 Warlock with the older Fiend subclass | The example pairs the older subclass with the 2014 Warlock. |
| 2024 character choosing spells | The examples specify using the 2024 spell list. |
These examples describe D&D Beyond’s rules and tool guidance; they do not settle every possible interaction, third-party option, or ruling at every table. Check whether a specific older subclass has a 2024 counterpart before allowing it with the revised class.

There is no universal best choice. Weigh the practical trade-offs that matter to your campaign:
Rank #3
- What the group already knows and owns: If your group is comfortable with its 2014 books, it can keep using them.
- Interest in revised character options: Consider whether players want the updated classes and other character choices in the 2024 books.
- Campaign and third-party material: Check whether your game depends on particular older options, and whether those options can be used under your chosen baseline.
- Rules coordination: A single baseline keeps version choices simpler; mixing versions requires clear rulings for options that interact.
If your group chooses to adopt the revised rules, the 2024 Player’s Handbook is the relevant core book for those rules. It is not a required purchase for a group continuing with the 2014 baseline.
