Reviews praise its choice-driven role-playing, writing, and complete content bundle, but launch coverage also criticized performance and polish. Updates have continued, including a 2026 patch; patch notes document targeted fixes, not flawless performance on every platform or PC configuration.
What does Spacer’s Choice Edition include?
The edition bundles The Outer Worlds with both story expansions: Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos. That makes the package more compelling for first-time players or anyone who has not bought the add-ons than for someone who already owns and has played everything.

Private Division’s March 2023 launch announcement describes upgraded lighting and environments, dynamic 4K resolution, improved character detail and animation, AI changes, updated lip sync and facial animation, and a level cap raised to 99. The PlayStation Store listing also mentions higher-resolution environments, additional animations, and grenades. These are publisher and platform descriptions of the edition’s features, rather than independent measurements of image quality or performance. The visual and progression changes do not amount to a new campaign. The main reason to choose this edition is the complete bundle, with its presentation updates as an additional draw.

What do the reviews say?
The review record is mixed rather than a simple endorsement or rejection: critics recognize the RPG’s writing, choices, and worlds, while several launch reviews objected to unstable frame rates, frame-pacing problems, bugs, or a remaster that did not feel sufficiently polished.
When accessed on October 8, 2026, Metacritic listed a 72 Metascore from 13 critic reviews and a 6.7 user score from 155 ratings. Those are snapshots that can change as reviews or ratings are added. One critic described it as “a mighty pleasant way for a sci-fi RPG fan to spend 30-40 hours”; that is an individual reviewer’s estimate, not a guaranteed playtime. Another said performance issues tarnished the definitive edition.

The appeal is clearest if you enjoy role-playing games built around dialogue, decisions, and exploring distinct sci-fi settings. If technical smoothness is your priority, give the platform-specific performance record more weight than the edition’s visual-feature claims.

The game has received patches addressing technical and gameplay issues, but the existence of fixes does not establish that every problem is gone. Official Steam notes for versions 1.1 through 1.4 in 2023 mention work on hitching, frame-rate dips, crashes, visual issues, and bugs. Patch 2.5.7.0, dated April 30, 2026, lists fixes and targeted performance improvements in areas including Fallbrook, Roseway, Eridanos, Monarch, Emerald Vale, and Gorgon. Those notes do not certify consistent performance across platforms, hardware, or PC configurations. The reviews cited above largely reflect launch-era experiences, so they are relevant historical context, not a definitive assessment of how the game runs for every player now. Without testing on your own platform, neither “all fixed” nor “still broken everywhere” is supported.
Is it worth buying if you already own the original?
That depends on your edition, platform, and expansion ownership. If you own only the base game, or have not played both expansions, the bundle may add substantial content. If you already own the base game and both add-ons, the decision rests more on how much you value the presentation changes and whether your platform’s current performance suits you.

Prices and upgrade entitlements have changed over time. Private Division announced a $59.99 MSRP, a limited $47.99 introductory price, and a $9.99 upgrade for owners of the base game and both DLCs in March 2023; those were launch-era terms, not current offers. The US PlayStation Store displayed $39.99 when accessed on October 8, 2026, but prices vary by region and can change. Check your own storefront and account before buying or upgrading.

Obsidian’s Steam news page says the base edition would be delisted from most storefronts starting May 27, 2026, with Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch named as exceptions; delisting does not remove the original from existing libraries. It also describes free-upgrade terms for some existing owners. During the rollout, Obsidian told Windows Central that base-edition saves can move to Spacer’s Choice Edition, but saves cannot move back because of newer features such as grenades. Windows Central’s May 27, 2026 report quotes that clarification. Confirm current eligibility and save-transfer details for your platform and account before changing editions.

Which platforms and audience does it suit?
The ESRB lists Windows PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series for this edition and rates it Mature 17+ for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Strong Language, and Use of Drugs. The PlayStation Store listing identifies PS4 and PS5 versions, offline play, and one-player content. Platform comparisons matter here: the cited reviews and patch notes do not establish how the edition performs on every console or PC setup. Before buying, weigh the included expansions, the value of replaying or playing for the first time, your platform’s current performance reports, and any upgrade or save-transfer terms that apply to your account.
