Yes. Meta Quest 3S and Meta Quest 3 are standalone, all-in-one VR headsets, so you can play compatible native Quest games and use apps without owning a gaming PC. The headset contains its own processor, battery, storage and operating system.
A gaming PC is only needed for a different use case: running PC VR software through Meta Quest Link, Air Link or Steam Link. You can therefore buy a Quest headset, start in standalone mode and add PC VR later if you decide you want access to computer-rendered games or a PC-based library. A Link cable is an optional PC-VR accessory, not a requirement for ordinary Quest use.

Standalone means the headset can perform its core computing tasks by itself rather than relying on a separate computer. Meta classifies Quest 3 and Quest 3S as “all-in-one” headsets, and the Quest 3S product description identifies a built-in processor, battery, storage and operating system.
When you install and run compatible native Quest software, the headset supplies the processing and displays the result in the headset. A desktop or gaming laptop is not doing that work in the background. This is the normal operating model for Quest games and apps bought for the Quest platform.

The distinction matters because “VR headset” can describe two very different products. Some headsets are primarily displays and tracking devices that require a computer. Quest is designed to work as a complete device first, with a computer connection available as an additional mode.
Which Meta Quest headsets can be used without a gaming PC?
Quest 3S and Quest 3 are the clearest current examples of PC-free Quest headsets. Meta’s comparison documentation labels both as all-in-one devices, while listing Meta Quest Link separately as a PC-VR feature.

What can you do on Quest without a gaming computer?
You can use compatible native Quest games and apps directly on the headset. The headset’s own processor handles those experiences, while its internal battery and storage let it operate as a self-contained device.
- Play native Quest games: Choose software made for the Quest platform and run it without a computer connected.
- Use native VR applications: Compatible non-game apps follow the same standalone model.
- Start with a PC-free setup: The headset itself is the essential hardware purchase for this mode; a gaming tower, laptop and Link cable are not prerequisites.
- Keep the option of PC VR open: A standalone purchase does not prevent you from connecting the headset to a suitable computer later.
“Compatible” is important. Standalone Quest software and PC VR software are separate targets, so a title designed to run on a computer is not automatically a native Quest application. Check the platform listing for a particular game or app before assuming it will run without a PC.
When do you actually need a gaming PC?
You need a gaming PC when the software you want is intended to run on that computer rather than natively on the headset. In that arrangement, the computer supplies the PC VR program and rendering, while Quest acts as the connected headset.

| Use case | Gaming PC needed? | Where the software runs | Connection described in the documentation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native Quest games and apps | No | On the Quest headset | Standalone operation |
| PC VR through Meta Quest Link | Yes | On the computer | Quest Link connection for supported Quest headsets |
| PC VR through Air Link | Yes | On the computer | Wireless PC-to-headset connection |
| Steam games through Steam Link | Yes | On the user’s computer, then streamed to Quest | Steam Link streams games from the computer to a compatible Meta Quest headset |
Steam Link does not make a Quest headset an independent Steam gaming computer. It is a streaming route: the computer remains the source of the game, and the headset receives the experience over a compatible wireless-network setup.
Is a Quest Link cable required?
No. A Link cable is required only for the wired version of the PC-VR use case. It is not needed to play native Quest games or use native apps.
Meta’s documentation identifies Link as a way to connect supported Quest headsets to a computer. The Quest 3S description also treats connecting to a high-end gaming PC by cable or Wi-Fi as optional. That makes a USB-C VR link cable a later accessory decision rather than part of the minimum purchase for a first-time standalone user.
If you never intend to run PC VR, buying a cable solely because you own a Quest headset adds hardware without changing what the headset can already do on its own. If you later want PC VR, you can then choose between the wired Link route and a supported wireless method, subject to the current compatibility and network requirements.

What is the difference between native Quest software and PC VR?
Native Quest software is built to run within the headset’s standalone hardware. PC VR software is installed or launched on a computer and reaches the headset through Link, Air Link or another supported streaming connection.
Native Quest software
- Does not require a gaming PC.
- Uses the headset’s built-in processor, storage, battery and operating system.
- Is the simplest path for someone buying a first VR headset and wanting to play without a computer.
PC VR software
- Requires a compatible computer because the computer runs the VR software.
- Uses Quest as the headset connected to that computer.
- Can be reached through Meta Quest Link or, for supported Steam use, Steam Link.
These are complementary modes, not competing definitions of what Quest is. A Quest headset can be standalone for one session and connected to a PC for another; the PC connection is an expansion of capability, not the foundation of ordinary operation.

What do you need to start using a Quest without a PC?
The essential purchase for PC-free use is a standalone Quest headset such as Quest 3S or Quest 3. You do not need to add a gaming PC or Link cable merely to begin using compatible native software.
The headset’s integrated components are what make this possible:
Recommended Free Tools
- Processor: Performs the computing required by native experiences.
- Battery: Powers the headset without a continuously connected computer.
- Storage: Holds the operating system and compatible installed software.
- Operating system: Provides the software environment for standalone Quest applications.
Exact account, network and software-version requirements can change. For a purchase or setup made at a later date, follow Meta’s current support instructions for the specific headset and software version rather than relying on an old checklist.
Should you buy a Quest headset if you do not own a gaming PC?
Yes, if your goal is native Quest gaming and applications. The standalone design is specifically suited to a PC-free starting point, and the absence of a gaming computer does not prevent you from using the headset’s core platform.
Before buying, decide which software library matters to you:
Choose standalone Quest when:
- You want to play compatible Quest titles without building or upgrading a computer.
- You prefer the fewest hardware dependencies and the simplest connection arrangement.
- You are buying your first VR headset and do not already have a suitable gaming PC.
Plan for PC VR when:
- You specifically want software that runs on a computer rather than a native Quest release.
- You want to stream games from a computer through Steam Link.
- You already own, or intend to buy, a computer capable of the PC VR software you want.
The cost decision is therefore not just the price of the headset. A standalone-only buyer can stop at the headset, while a PC-VR buyer must also account for the computer and the chosen connection method. If the computer is not already available, PC VR is a separate hardware investment.

What changes if you add a gaming PC later?
You can keep using the Quest headset in standalone mode and add PC VR as a second way to use it. Meta identifies Quest Link support for Quest 3, Quest 3S, Quest 2 and Quest Pro, while Steam identifies Steam Link as a way to stream games from a computer to compatible Meta Quest headsets.
The later upgrade is modular: first use native Quest software, then add the computer, connection method and any required accessories when a particular PC VR library justifies them. The exact current compatibility matrix, software versions and network recommendations should be checked in Meta’s and Steam’s support documentation at the time you configure the connection.
A PC connection also changes the source of the experience. In standalone mode, the headset is the computer. In Link or Steam Link mode, the external computer is responsible for running the PC software, and the Quest becomes the viewing and tracking device connected to it.

“Every Quest owner needs a gaming PC.”
That is incorrect. Quest 3S and Quest 3 are all-in-one headsets, and native Quest games and apps are designed to run without another computer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“A Link cable comes in the basic requirements.”
It does not. Link is relevant when you choose wired PC VR; it is not a condition of standalone Quest use.
“Steam Link means Steam runs inside the headset.”
Steam Link streams games from a computer. The computer remains necessary for that use case, even though the game is viewed through the Quest headset.

“Standalone and PC VR are mutually exclusive.”
They are two modes available to supported Quest hardware. Buying for standalone use does not remove the option of connecting to a computer later.
How should you make the final decision?
Use this three-question check:
- Do the games and apps you want have native Quest versions? If yes, a gaming PC is not required for those experiences.
- Do you specifically want PC VR or computer-based Steam streaming? If yes, plan for a suitable gaming PC and a supported connection method.
- Are you unsure today? Start with the standalone headset. The PC connection is optional, so you can defer the extra computer and cable decision until your software needs are clear.
For most first-time buyers asking whether they can use Meta Quest without a gaming PC, the practical answer is straightforward: choose a standalone Quest headset, install compatible native software and treat PC VR as an optional expansion rather than a prerequisite.

Can I use Meta Quest if I never connect it to a computer?
Yes. Native Quest software is intended to run on the headset itself, so a Quest can remain a standalone device throughout its useful life. You would only miss software and streaming features whose source is a separate PC.
Does Steam Link remove the need for a gaming PC?
No. Steam Link changes how the computer’s games reach the headset; it does not replace the computer that runs them. The PC and a compatible wireless-network setup remain part of that arrangement.
Is a Link cable useful if I only play native Quest games?
Not for that purpose. Native games do not need a cable to obtain their processing, so the cable becomes relevant only if you later decide to use wired PC VR through Quest Link.
Can a Quest 2 also be used as a standalone headset?
Yes. Meta’s Quest 2 documentation describes it as an all-in-one VR device and presents connection to a gaming computer for Rift titles as optional. Its PC-VR compatibility is a separate feature from its ability to run native software.
