No. PS Remote Play requires access to a PS4 or PS5 console. The app streams the game from that console to your phone, tablet, PC, Mac, compatible TV device, or another supported endpoint; it does not run games independently from Sony’s cloud.
There is one important distinction: people without a console can use cloud streaming on PlayStation Portal in supported regions, including the United States. That separate feature requires PlayStation Plus Premium and only supports selected games.

What PS Remote Play actually does
Remote Play turns your PS4 or PS5 into the host. The console runs the game, while the Remote Play device receives the video and sends your controls back over a local network or the internet.
Recommended Free Tools
In simple terms, Remote Play means “your console is running the game somewhere else.” Cloud streaming means “Sony’s servers are running the game.” Those are different services, even though both deliver gameplay as a video stream.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Sony’s Remote Play documentation explicitly requires a PS4 or PS5 for this feature. Installing the free app, signing in to a PlayStation account, or pairing a DualSense controller does not create a cloud-gaming session.
What you need for Remote Play
- A PS4 or PS5 console that you can access and configure
- A PlayStation account used with the console
- The PS Remote Play app or another compatible Remote Play device
- A compatible game
- A compatible controller, unless the device and game support touch controls
- An internet connection of at least 5 Mbps; Sony recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience
Remote Play itself is not presented by Sony as universally requiring PlayStation Plus. However, individual games may require a PlayStation Plus plan for online multiplayer. Games that must be streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium are also not compatible with Remote Play. See Sony’s PlayStation Plus support information for plan-specific requirements.
Which devices can use PS Remote Play?
Sony supports Remote Play on:
- iPhone and iPad
- Android phones and tablets
- Windows PCs
- Mac computers
- Compatible Android TV devices and Chromecast with Google TV
- PlayStation Portal when connecting to a PS5
These devices are endpoints, not replacements for the console. A phone, laptop, TV device, or Portal can display and control a game, but the PS4 or PS5 still supplies the game session.

For ordinary Portal Remote Play, no. Sony describes the Portal as a remote player that connects to a PS5. Its standard function requires a PS5 with Remote Play enabled.
For Portal cloud streaming, sometimes yes. In supported countries, a Portal owner can stream selected PS5 games from the cloud without using a PS5. This is a separate feature, not a change to how Remote Play works.

Requirements for Portal cloud streaming
- PlayStation Portal
- An adult PlayStation account
- An active PlayStation Plus Premium membership
- A supported country or region, including the United States
- Broadband internet
- An eligible game
Sony lists the United States, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom, and numerous European countries among the supported locations. Availability can change, so check the current cloud-streaming availability and game information for your country.
The cloud library is selective. Not every PS5 game is available, and owning a game does not guarantee that it can be streamed. Sony says availability for digital PS5 games varies by game, region, and country. Portal cloud streaming currently covers selected PS5 games; PS4 and PS3 games are not currently available through this Portal feature.

How to set up Remote Play when you have a console
On PS5
- Open Settings > System > Remote Play.
- Turn on Enable Remote Play.
- To wake the console from Rest Mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Turning on PS5 from Network.
On PS4
- Open Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- Open Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4 and activate the console.
- Under Power Save Settings > Set Features Available in Rest Mode, enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS4 from Network.
These settings require access to the console. They cannot be completed from the app alone.
Connect a phone, tablet, PC, or Mac
- Install the free PS Remote Play app.
- Sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the console.
- Turn on the console or place it in Rest Mode.
- Open the app and select PS5 or PS4.
- Allow the app to search for and connect to the console.
- Connect a DualSense, DualSense Edge, or DUALSHOCK 4 controller if required.
For computer-specific requirements and setup, consult Sony’s Remote Play guide for PC and Mac. Sony lists Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11, a seventh-generation Intel Core processor or later, at least 100 MB of storage, 2 GB of RAM, a 1024×768 display or higher, and a USB port. Supported Mac versions listed by Sony range from macOS Big Sur through macOS Tahoe, with at least 40 MB of storage and 2 GB of RAM.
What if you have no console?
| Your equipment | Can it use Remote Play? |
|---|---|
| No console plus a phone | No |
| No console plus a PC or Mac | No |
| No console plus a DualSense | No. The controller does not provide the game. |
| No console plus a Portal | No for ordinary Remote Play. |
| No console plus Portal and PlayStation Plus Premium | Selected PS5 games may work through cloud streaming in supported regions. |
You may be able to use someone else’s PS4 or PS5 with permission, but that is not a simple console-free workaround. The console may need initial physical setup, account pairing, Remote Play settings, and Rest Mode configuration. The owner also needs to accept the account and privacy implications, and a Remote Play session can affect what appears on the console.

Internet requirements and common problems
Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum for Remote Play and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. For Portal cloud streaming, Sony lists 5 Mbps to establish a session, 7 Mbps for 720p, and 13 Mbps for 1080p.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Those figures are not guarantees. Latency, upload performance, Wi-Fi congestion, NAT configuration, the console’s connection, and the distance between the console and the remote device can all affect playability. If possible, connect the console to the router by Ethernet, use a strong Wi-Fi connection for the remote device, and stop other bandwidth-heavy activity.
The app cannot find the console
- Confirm that the console is powered on or in Rest Mode.
- Check that Remote Play is enabled.
- Make sure the app and console use the intended PlayStation account.
- Install the latest console system software.
- On PS5, check the internet and network-wake settings under Rest Mode options.
- Test the connection near the console before trying from outside your home.
The picture is delayed or unstable
- Use a wired connection for the console where possible.
- Move the remote device closer to the Wi-Fi router.
- Reduce Remote Play video or mobile-data quality when the connection is weak.
- Test whether other devices are saturating the network.
- Remember that a fast download speed cannot eliminate high latency.
The game will not start
Check compatibility. Sony excludes PlayStation VR and PlayStation VR2 games, games requiring additional peripherals beyond compatible controllers, and games that must be streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium from Remote Play.
Should you buy a Portal, Premium, or a PS5?
- Already own a PS5: Portal can be a convenient dedicated Remote Play device, but a phone, tablet, PC, or Mac can also serve as the endpoint.
- Own no console and want selected PS5 games: Portal plus PlayStation Plus Premium may be worthwhile if your region, account, internet connection, and desired games are eligible.
- Want broad PlayStation access without buying hardware: Do not assume Remote Play or Premium alone provides it. Remote Play still needs a console, while Portal cloud streaming has a limited catalog.
- Want local play, installed games, or the broadest console functionality: A PS5 is the more complete option.
For reference, Sony’s U.S. price signals checked August 18, 2026 listed Portal at $249.99, PlayStation Plus Premium at $19.99 monthly, $54.99 for three months, or $159.99 for 12 months, and the PS5 at $649.99. Sony announced those hardware prices as effective April 2, 2026. Prices, availability, automatic-renewal terms, and cloud catalogs can change; verify the current figures on PlayStation Direct and the official PlayStation Plus page.
Before buying a Portal for console-free play, check the specific games you want rather than assuming that ownership or inclusion in the PlayStation Plus catalog makes a title streamable.
