The most reliable way to transfer PS5 recordings to a Windows PC or Mac is to copy them from Media Gallery to a normal USB drive, then copy the files from that drive to the computer. Format the drive as FAT or exFAT—do not use a drive configured as PS5 USB extended storage.
For a recent, short, non-4K clip, PlayStation App is a convenient wireless alternative. It is not suitable for every recording: the app supports videos up to 1,920 × 1,080 and three minutes, and keeps captures available for 14 days.

Method 1: Transfer PS5 recordings with a USB drive
USB is the best option for 4K video, clips longer than three minutes, older captures, large batches, and full-quality local backups. PlayStation’s current instructions use Media Gallery and the Copy to USB Drive command.

- Use a commercially available USB flash drive, external hard drive, or external SSD.
- Format it as FAT or exFAT.
- Do not configure it as PS5 USB extended storage for games. That is a different storage mode.
- Back up anything important before formatting. Formatting erases the drive.
A flash drive is convenient for a few clips. A larger drive is more practical for a capture archive. Check the connector on both devices; a USB-C drive or data-capable USB-C adapter may be useful with newer laptops.

Copy captures from the PS5
- Connect the prepared USB drive directly to the PS5.
- From the Games home screen, open Media Gallery.
- Open All, Screenshots, Albums, or the relevant media category.
- Highlight the screenshot or video clip you want.
- Open More (…), then select Copy to USB Drive.
- For a batch transfer, choose Select Multiple, select the captures, and apply the USB-copy command.
- Wait for the operation to finish before disconnecting the drive.
Minor menu wording can vary with PS5 system software, but the current export path is Media Gallery → More (…) → Copy to USB Drive. Folder names and file organization on the drive can also vary, so do not rely on a particular directory layout.
Copy the files to Windows or macOS
- Safely disconnect the USB drive from the PS5 after copying finishes.
- Connect it to the PC or Mac.
- Open File Explorer on Windows or Finder on macOS.
- Open the USB drive and locate the copied screenshots and recordings.
- Copy them to a folder on the computer, preferably organized by game or date.
- Open at least one file to verify that the transfer completed successfully.
Copy the media to the computer before editing rather than working directly from the USB drive. Do not delete the PS5 copies or reformat the drive until you have checked every file you need.
Method 2: Download clips with PlayStation App
PlayStation App can move supported captures without a USB drive, but it requires setup and has strict limits. PlayStation says this feature does not require PlayStation Plus. The current requirements and retention policy are listed on its official capture support page.
Enable capture uploads
- Link the PS5 to PlayStation App.
- Put the console in Rest Mode and enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
- In the app, open Library → Captures and choose Enable.
- Alternatively, on the PS5 open Settings → Captures and Broadcasts → Captures and enable Auto-Upload.
Auto-upload does not add older captures retroactively. Enable the feature before making the clips you want available in the app.
Upload and download an existing supported clip
- On the PS5, open Media Gallery and highlight the capture.
- Press the Options button and select Upload to PlayStation App.
- On your phone, open PlayStation App and go to Library → Captures.
- Select the capture and choose Download.
- Move the downloaded file from the phone to the PC using a USB cable, cloud-storage folder, or another normal file-transfer method.
PlayStation App supports gameplay videos that are not 4K, up to 1,920 × 1,080, and no longer than three minutes. Captures remain available in the app for 14 days under the current support policy. Large downloads may also use substantial mobile data.

Which transfer method should you use?
| Need | Best method | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 4K recording | USB drive | PlayStation App does not support 4K captures. |
| Clip longer than three minutes | USB drive | The app’s video limit is three minutes. |
| Older capture or large archive | USB drive | App uploads are not retroactive and expire after 14 days. |
| One recent short clip | PlayStation App | Wireless and convenient once enabled. |
| Future long recordings saved directly to a computer | Capture card | Records new HDMI gameplay through PC software. |
How do I transfer 4K or long PS5 recordings?
Use the USB method. PlayStation App excludes videos above 1080p and videos longer than three minutes. The PS5 records at 1080p by default and supports manual 4K recording when the relevant capture setting is enabled, according to PlayStation’s PS5 FAQ.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAfter copying a high-resolution file, confirm that the PC’s media player and editing software support its resolution, frame rate, codec, and HDR characteristics. A file may be intact even if an older player displays HDR or high-resolution footage incorrectly. Editing or sharing services may also change HDR or compress the video, so avoid messaging apps when maximum quality matters.
Why is the USB drive not showing up?
PlayStation warns that not every USB device is compatible. Try these steps in order:
- Connect the drive directly to the PS5 rather than through a hub.
- Back up the drive, then reformat it as FAT or exFAT on a computer.
- Try another PS5 USB port.
- Confirm that it is not configured as PS5 USB extended storage.
- Try another known-compatible USB drive.
- Restart the PS5 and check for a system software update.
- Copy one small screenshot as a test before attempting a large batch.
Reformatting can fix a filesystem or configuration problem, but it is not guaranteed to solve every compatibility issue and destroys the drive’s existing contents.

What if the files are on the drive but the PC cannot open them?
- Try a different USB port or a data-capable adapter, especially on a USB-C-only laptop.
- Make sure you are viewing the correct drive and the folder where the PS5 placed the files.
- Copy the file to the computer before opening it.
- Test a screenshot first. If it works but some videos do not, recopy the affected videos from the PS5.
- Try VLC or another current media player if the default player fails.
- Check high-resolution and HDR footage in software that supports those formats.
- Suspect a failing or counterfeit drive if files are incomplete or corrupted.
Do not format the drive until all required files have been verified on the PC.
Can I connect the PS5 directly to a PC?
For ordinary saved captures, use a separate USB drive as the intermediary. The official consumer workflow exports media from Media Gallery to that drive; the PC does not function as a browsable extension of the PS5’s internal Media Gallery. This is a practical limitation of the supported workflow, not a claim about every specialized technical setup.
Remote Play is also not a normal file-transfer method. It lets a PC or Mac control or view the PS5 over a network, but PlayStation’s capture-export instructions point to USB or PlayStation App instead. See the PS5 support hub for the separate Remote Play and storage guidance.
Should you use a capture card?
A capture card is worthwhile for future recording, streaming, long sessions, or a workflow that saves HDMI gameplay directly to PC software. It is unnecessary for clips that already exist in Media Gallery and does not retrieve those old files.
PS5 supports external HDMI capture devices when HDCP is disabled in the console settings. A capture-card setup also requires HDMI connections, recording software, enough PC storage, and decisions about bitrate and encoding. For occasional transfers, a compatible FAT/exFAT USB drive is simpler.

What can and cannot be transferred?
This guide is for screenshots and gameplay video clips saved through the PS5 capture features, including clips created through the Create menu. It is not a method for transferring:
- Installed PS5 games or game data to a PC.
- PS5 saved games as ordinary files on a computer.
- A complete PS5 system backup as editable media.
Those use different storage and backup systems. PlayStation separates capture export from game and saved-data management in its PS5 storage guidance. Media can be copied from the PS5 to USB, but PlayStation does not support copying that media from the USB drive back into PS5 console storage through this workflow.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I transfer PS5 recordings without a USB drive?
Yes. PlayStation App can download recent, non-4K clips up to 1,920 × 1,080 and three minutes, provided capture uploads were enabled. For 4K, longer, older, or large batches, use USB.
Do I need PlayStation Plus?
No. PlayStation says PlayStation Plus is not required for the PlayStation App capture feature.
Can I use an external SSD?
Yes, if the drive is compatible with the PS5 and formatted as FAT or exFAT. A drive configured as PS5 USB extended storage may need to be reformatted, which erases its contents.
Can I move recordings back from USB to the PS5?
PlayStation’s capture-export guidance supports copying captures to USB, not copying them from that USB drive back into PS5 console storage.
