NeoForge is a free, open-source mod loader and modding API for Minecraft: Java Edition. It loads NeoForge-compatible mods, provides the game hooks and APIs those mods use, and includes tools for developing and testing modded Minecraft.
It is not a mod, launcher, mod marketplace, modpack, shader pack, or separate edition of Minecraft. If a modpack says it requires NeoForge, you install NeoForge as the platform that runs the pack’s mods.

NeoForge in plain English
A useful way to understand a modded Minecraft installation is:
Minecraft version → mod loader → modpack and mod files → launcher or server

Minecraft Java Edition does not natively load most community-made mods. A loader changes how the game starts, discovers compatible .jar files, and provides the systems mods need to work. NeoForge supplies features such as events, registries, networking facilities, configuration support, dependency handling, and development run configurations.
NeoForge itself usually does not add a new weapon, biome, machine, creature, or gameplay mechanic. Those features come from the mods loaded through it.
What NeoForge is not
- A mod: NeoForge is the platform; individual mods are separate files.
- A launcher: the official Minecraft Launcher, Prism Launcher, and other launchers can start NeoForge instances.
- A marketplace: CurseForge and Modrinth distribute mods and modpacks. A file hosted on CurseForge may target Forge, NeoForge, Fabric, or another loader.
- A modpack: a modpack is a curated collection of mods, configuration files, and often a specific loader version.
- A resource or shader pack: those modify visual assets or rendering content rather than providing the mod-loading platform.
NeoForge describes the project and its source code on its official GitHub repository.
Why was NeoForge created?
NeoForge was publicly announced on July 12, 2023, as a fork of Minecraft Forge. According to NeoForged’s own project announcement and 2023 retrospective, the fork followed prolonged disagreements involving management, decision-making, and the project’s direction.
NeoForged’s account says that nearly the entire original Forge development team joined the new project, with LexManos as a notable exception. That is the founding team’s account of the split, rather than an independently adjudicated finding about the disagreements.
The new project sought independent control of its governance, branding, infrastructure, and technical direction. Early NeoForge versions retained substantial compatibility with Forge while the codebase was separated. Over time, NeoForge established its own APIs, metadata, namespaces, and behavior.

NeoForge is not the same as Forge, but it is historically derived from Forge. It began as a fork rather than as an unrelated loader or a simple installer rename.
| Question | Practical answer |
|---|---|
| Are they the same project? | No. NeoForge is independently maintained. |
| Do they share technical heritage? | Yes. NeoForge began from Forge code and development history. |
| Can every Forge mod run on NeoForge? | No. Compatibility depends on the Minecraft version, loader version, mod, APIs, and dependencies. |
| Can a Forge mod be made NeoForge-compatible by renaming it? | No. Renaming a file does not change its metadata, namespaces, or APIs. |
NeoForged’s 2024 retrospective documents changes including NeoForge-specific metadata such as neoforge.mods.toml, namespace changes, event-system work, networking changes, and broader API refactoring. Those changes are why a Forge label cannot be treated as interchangeable with a NeoForge label.
The Minecraft 1.20.1 exception
Minecraft 1.20.1 is a special case. NeoForge’s user guide recommends Forge for that version because Forge had longer support there.
For Minecraft 1.20.2 and later, NeoForge developed into a more separate loader and ecosystem. For newer supported Minecraft releases, it is a major Forge-family target, but every modpack still determines the correct choice.

NeoForge versus Fabric and Quilt
Fabric, Quilt, Forge, and NeoForge are separate mod-loader ecosystems. Their APIs, metadata, and mod formats differ.
In general, a Fabric mod .jar will not load in NeoForge, and a NeoForge mod will not load in Fabric. Some projects publish separate files for several loaders, while other content may be loader-independent. Always look for a file explicitly labeled:
- NeoForge;
- the exact Minecraft version; and
- the required dependency versions.
Likewise, if a modpack is marked Forge or Fabric, install that loader rather than substituting NeoForge.

Which Minecraft versions does NeoForge support?
NeoForge support changes as Minecraft releases change. There is no permanently correct “latest NeoForge version” to copy into an article or installation guide. Check the official NeoForged download selector and then check the modpack’s own instructions.
As of the supplied research date, August 18, 2026, the official project site displayed installer files for current releases including a Minecraft 26.1 section. That listing is time-sensitive; it should not be treated as a permanent support table.
- Choose the Minecraft version first.
- Check which NeoForge builds exist for it.
- Confirm that every required mod supports that same Minecraft version and NeoForge line.
- Follow the modpack author’s specified loader build, including any beta designation.
Do not mix files from different Minecraft versions simply because their filenames look similar.
Which Java version does NeoForge require?
The Java requirement depends on the Minecraft version:
| Minecraft version | Java requirement in NeoForge’s current user guide |
|---|---|
| 1.20.2–1.20.4 | Java 17 |
| 1.20.5 and later | Java 21 |
NeoForge requires Java to be available separately, even though the official Minecraft Launcher may manage a Java runtime for vanilla Minecraft. A launcher-managed vanilla runtime is not a guarantee that a manually installed NeoForge server or development environment is using the right Java version.
For mod development, the documented NeoForge setup for Minecraft 1.21.9–1.21.10 specifies a 64-bit Java 21 JDK/JVM. Older development targets, such as 1.20.4, use Java 17. See the version-specific 1.21.10 development guide and 1.20.4 development guide.

The exact launcher labels can change, but the installation sequence is generally:

- Install the matching Java version. Use Java 17 for the applicable 1.20.2–1.20.4 targets and Java 21 for 1.20.5 and later, according to the current guide.
- Download the installer. Get the installer for the exact Minecraft version from the official NeoForged site or its Maven repository.
- Run the installer and select the client installation option.
- Open the Minecraft Launcher. Select or create the NeoForge installation profile generated by the installer.
- Launch once. This creates the relevant game directories, including the location used for mods.
- Install compatible mods. Put the correct NeoForge files into the generated
modsfolder, or let a supported third-party launcher manage the instance. - Launch again. If it fails, inspect the crash report and
latest.log.
Third-party launchers can automate the loader, Java runtime, dependency, and modpack setup. That is particularly useful for complete modpacks because it isolates files by instance and makes rollback easier. Manual installation gives server administrators, developers, and advanced users more direct control.
How to install a NeoForge server
NeoForge’s official server guide uses the installer’s server option:
- Download the installer for the exact Minecraft and NeoForge versions you need.
- Open a terminal in the directory where you want the server installed.
- Run:
java -jar /path/to/neoforge-installer.jar --installServer
Replace the path and filename with the installer you actually downloaded. Documentation examples contain particular versions and should not be copied as permanently current commands.
- Adjust
user_jvm_args.txtif you need to change memory or other JVM arguments. - Start the generated
run.baton Windows orrun.shon a Unix-like system. - On the first run, the server stops and creates
eula.txt. - Review Minecraft’s EULA, then change
eula=falsetoeula=trueif you agree. - Start the server again.
- Place server-compatible mods in the server’s
modsdirectory.
Players must use the matching Minecraft version, compatible NeoForge loader line, and required content mods. Client-only mods may not belong on the dedicated server, but the distinction is not always obvious; NeoForge’s server documentation notes that some cases require testing. Obtain mods from trustworthy sources such as CurseForge or Modrinth.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How developers use NeoForge
For developers, NeoForge is more than a runtime loader. It provides a version-specific development kit and Gradle-based build tooling, APIs for registering content, event systems, networking facilities, mod metadata, development run configurations, and tools for launching test clients and servers.
The official getting-started documentation recommends:
- a 64-bit Java JDK appropriate for the target Minecraft version;
- an IDE, with IntelliJ IDEA and Eclipse officially supported in the documented setup;
- familiarity with Java programming;
- the version-specific NeoForge documentation and migration notes.
A new developer can use the official Mod Generator to enter a mod name, mod ID, package name, Minecraft version, and Gradle plugin, then download a starter project. The project can be opened in an IDE, built with Gradle, and run using the generated development client or server configurations. Start with the official getting-started guide for the target version rather than applying instructions from a different Minecraft release.
NeoForge troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause and recovery |
|---|---|
| “Wrong loader” or incompatible mod error | Remove the file and download its NeoForge version for the exact Minecraft version. Do not rename a Forge file. |
| Missing dependency | Install the required library in the version requested by the mod, or use the modpack’s complete dependency list. |
| Crash during startup | Check latest.log and the crash report for a wrong version, Java mismatch, duplicate file, conflicting mod, or client-only mod on a server. Remove recently added mods and restore them in groups. |
| Server closes after its first start | Review the EULA, set eula=true only after agreeing to it, and run the generated script again. |
| Players cannot connect | Match Minecraft version, NeoForge loader family and compatible build, required content mods, and mod versions where required. |
| Missing textures or rendering crash | Check client-side dependencies and graphics-related mods. Confirm that the installed file is intended for NeoForge and the target Minecraft version. |
The most reliable general recovery method is to return to a minimal working installation, then add mods back in small groups. This identifies whether the problem is a loader mismatch, missing dependency, conflicting file, or Java configuration issue.
Is NeoForge safe and free?
NeoForge is free and open source. Its official repository identifies the project under the LGPL-2.1 license.
That does not make every related service free. Minecraft Java Edition must be obtained legitimately, and server hosting, backups, storage, support, or premium launcher features may cost money. You can run a server yourself, use a rented virtual machine, or choose a managed host.
If you pay for hosting, verify the exact Minecraft version, NeoForge build, modpack import support, RAM allocation, CPU resources, backups, file or SFTP access, custom Java arguments, DDoS protection, server location, and cancellation terms. A host advertising Minecraft support does not automatically support every NeoForge release.
How to choose between NeoForge, Forge, and Fabric
| Choose | When it makes sense |
|---|---|
| NeoForge | Your desired version or modpack explicitly targets NeoForge, or you are developing for its current toolchain. |
| Forge | The pack is built for Forge, a required legacy mod has no NeoForge version, or you are targeting Minecraft 1.20.1, where NeoForge recommends Forge for longer support. |
| Fabric | Your required mods are Fabric-only or the pack’s documentation specifies Fabric. |
The correct selection order is:
- Identify the modpack or must-have mods.
- Identify their Minecraft version.
- Use the loader those files explicitly require.
- Install the corresponding Java version.
- Choose manual installation or a launcher based on how much control you need.
NeoForge’s independent ecosystem brings more choice for developers and pack authors, but it also means additional compatibility decisions. A modpack should normally use one loader ecosystem consistently unless its documentation explicitly explains an exception.
