If Game Pass games will not install on Windows 10, work through the failure layers in order: verify the subscription and Microsoft account, install Windows and Store updates, restart, repair the Microsoft Store, then address Gaming Services if the Xbox app redirects there or shows 0x80073D26 or 0x8007139F. Finally, check firewall, proxy and Store-registration restrictions. These steps separate an entitlement problem from a broken Store cache, an outdated Windows component, a Gaming Services failure or a managed-network block, so you avoid using an advanced repair before it is warranted.

What has to be working before a Game Pass game can install?

A Windows 10 Game Pass installation is not handled by the Xbox app alone. The Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Windows Update, Gaming Services, your Microsoft account and the network all have a role. A failure in any one of those layers can leave the app open while the Install button is missing, a download is stuck, or the app sends you to Gaming Services.

  • An eligible entitlement: the intended Microsoft account must have an active Game Pass plan that includes PC installation for the game and region.
  • Matching identity: sign in to the Microsoft Store and the Xbox app with the account that owns the entitlement. Using different accounts can make a game appear unavailable even when another account on the PC has Game Pass.
  • A working Windows 10 installation: pending Windows updates can prevent Store apps and their services from registering correctly.
  • Store and Gaming Services access: the Store must be able to download and register packages, while Gaming Services must be installed and running for Xbox app installations that require it.
  • Network and permissions: internet access, firewall and proxy rules, and administrator approval where Windows requests it can all affect the transaction.

Check those prerequisites before deleting anything. Sign-in, updates, a restart and the Store cache reset are low-impact actions; removing Gaming Services is an advanced repair reserved for the documented error path.

How do I fix Game Pass installation problems on Windows 10?

Use this sequence from least disruptive to most specialized. After each step, try the same game again and note whether the symptom changes.

  1. Verify the account, plan and permissions

Open the Microsoft Store and the Xbox app and confirm that both show the Microsoft account you intend to use. Check that the Game Pass plan is active and eligible for PC installation of the selected title. If Windows asks for administrator approval, have an administrator complete that prompt; a standard account cannot always install or register required components.

Make sure the PC is online before opening the game page. If the Install button is absent rather than failing after a click, treat entitlement, account, region or family settings as the first suspects instead of clearing caches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Install Windows updates and restart

In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install everything offered. Restart Windows even if the updater does not explicitly insist on it. A restart completes pending servicing operations and reloads Store and Xbox services.

Then update Store-delivered components: open Microsoft Store > Library and select Get updates (the label may appear as an update icon in older Store builds). Let the Store finish updating before launching the Xbox app. Microsoft’s Windows 10 Store guidance places updates and restart checks near the beginning of installation troubleshooting.

  3. Clear the Microsoft Store cache

Press Windows key + R, enter wsreset.exe, and press Enter. A command window may appear briefly; wait for it to close and for the Microsoft Store to reopen. Sign in again if requested, run Library > Get updates, then return to the game’s details page and start the installation.

If the Store still will not download, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select Microsoft Store, choose Advanced options, and use Repair. Try the installation again. If Repair has no effect, return to the same page and choose Reset, then reopen the Store and check its Library. The exact labels can vary slightly by Windows 10 release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  4. Inspect Store downloads and rerun the game installation

In Microsoft Store, open the downloads and updates view and look for a paused, failed or waiting item. Resume or cancel an abandoned transaction, then open the game’s product page and select Install again. A new attempt helps distinguish a transient queue problem from a service or policy failure.

  5. Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter

Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Store Apps, and run the troubleshooter. Apply only the corrections it reports, restart if it asks, and test the installation again. This is a Microsoft-supported Store recovery action and does not require removing Gaming Services.

What should I do when the Xbox app opens Gaming Services or shows 0x80073D26?

Codes 0x80073D26 and 0x8007139F, or a redirect from the Xbox app to install Gaming Services, point to the Gaming Services component rather than a missing Game Pass entitlement. Microsoft documented a Windows 10 incident and its specific first fix as the June 11, 2021 out-of-band update KB5004476, for OS builds 19041.1055, 19042.1055 and 19043.1055.

  1. Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and install KB5004476 if it is offered for the affected Windows 10 build. It is an incident-specific update; a later cumulative update may already contain the same correction, so check Windows Update history before trying to apply an older package manually.
  2. Restart Windows after the update completes.
  3. Open the Xbox app and try the game again. Microsoft states that, after the installation is complete, you should be able to install and start games.

If the error remains after the applicable update and restart, use Microsoft’s Gaming Services knowledge-base workaround. It requires an administrator PowerShell session, removes the Gaming Services package and its associated service registry entries, then requires a restart and a fresh Gaming Services installation from the Microsoft Store. Follow the commands exactly as published in that Microsoft article for your Windows 10 release; do not substitute a script from an unrelated forum, and do not use this destructive step merely because a download is slow.

After reinstalling Gaming Services, update the Store again, restart once more if requested, and test a small Game Pass title before starting a very large download. If the Xbox app still redirects to Gaming Services without presenting an install option, record the exact code and the Windows build for support.

How can firewall, proxy or Store-registration problems block an installation?

The Xbox app can launch successfully while Windows cannot reach the Microsoft Store or Windows Update endpoints needed to obtain and register a game. Microsoft Learn recommends checking Store registration and verifying that firewall or proxy rules do not block required endpoints.

Check the network path

  • Temporarily test the PC on a different trusted connection. If the installation works there, the original network’s filtering, proxy or DNS policy is the likely boundary.
  • On a managed PC, ask the administrator whether Microsoft Store, Windows Update and Xbox services are restricted. Do not disable a company firewall or proxy policy without approval.
  • Ensure Windows is not set to work offline and that the system date and time are reasonable; Store authentication can fail when the device cannot establish a valid secure session.

Check Store registration

Store registration problems usually show up as repeated download failures, an Install button that does nothing, or an error after the cache has been reset. Use the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter and the Store Repair option first. If an administrator manages the device, request a registration or policy review rather than attempting broad package removal.

How do I use the exact error code to choose the next branch?

Capture the hexadecimal code before changing more settings. The code, the screen that displayed it, and what happened immediately beforehand are more useful than a description such as “the install is broken.” Take a screenshot or copy the text, including leading zeros and capital letters.

Observed symptom Most likely layer to check Next action Relative risk
No Install button or a request to buy Account, plan, region or family eligibility Match the Microsoft Store and Xbox accounts; verify active PC entitlement Low
Download never starts or remains queued Store cache, Store queue, Windows updates or network Install updates, restart, run wsreset.exe, inspect Store downloads Low
Xbox app sends you to Gaming Services Gaming Services package or service Apply the documented Windows 10 update path; use the KB workaround only if needed Update is low; package removal is advanced
0x80073D26 or 0x8007139F Gaming Services Check applicability of KB5004476, restart, then follow Microsoft’s reinstallation procedure if unresolved Escalate only after the update path
Store opens but downloads fail on one network Firewall, proxy or endpoint policy Test another trusted connection and involve the network administrator Low if you do not alter policy
Failure changes after a Windows update Pending servicing or component registration Finish all updates, restart, update Store apps, then retry Low

Do not interpret a different code as confirmation that the Gaming Services script is appropriate. The error determines the branch; the same visible symptom can have different causes on a personal PC and a managed one.

Which fix should I try first, and which ones carry the most risk?

The practical order is based on reversibility and the evidence you have, not on how dramatic a command looks.

Fix What it changes When it fits Risk and recovery
Sign in and verify Game Pass Account context only Missing Install button, purchase prompt or wrong profile Minimal; sign out and back in if needed
Windows and Store updates plus restart Operating-system and app versions Any installation failure, especially after a recent update Low; allow updates to complete before retrying
wsreset.exe Microsoft Store cache Store opens but downloads or queue state are stuck Low; reopen Store and sign in if prompted
Store Repair Repairs the Store app without the full reset Cache reset did not correct registration or downloads Moderate; test immediately afterward
Store Reset Resets Store app data and settings Repair failed and Store behavior remains abnormal Moderate; sign in again and update the Library
KB5004476 path Corrects the documented Gaming Services incident on specified Windows 10 builds 0x80073D26, 0x8007139F or Gaming Services redirect Use only when applicable; restart after installation
Gaming Services removal and reinstall Removes package and service registry entries Only when the documented Gaming Services update path did not resolve the matching error Advanced; administrator access and an exact Microsoft script are required

What should I do if the installation still fails after the standard sequence?

Separate entitlement from delivery

Try opening another included PC title while signed into the same accounts. If several titles lack an Install button, return to plan, account and region checks. If only one title fails while other titles install, keep the exact code and product-page behavior; that evidence is more useful than repeating Store resets.

Check whether Windows is managed

On a work, school or family-managed PC, administrator approval, family settings, app-install policies and endpoint filtering can override what the Xbox app displays. Ask the administrator to verify Store and Windows Update access and to approve the installation rather than bypassing the controls.

Document the state before escalation

  • Windows 10 version and OS build, including whether the machine recently installed an update.
  • The Microsoft Store account and Xbox account being used (do not send passwords).
  • Game Pass plan type and the game’s exact title.
  • The complete hexadecimal error code, if any.
  • Whether the Xbox app redirected to Gaming Services.
  • Whether wsreset.exe, Store Repair/Reset, the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter and a restart changed the result.
  • Whether the failure occurs on another trusted network.

This record lets Microsoft support or a system administrator select the correct branch without asking you to repeat unrelated repairs.

How do I avoid making the problem worse?

  • Do not remove Gaming Services before checking whether your code matches Microsoft’s documented incident and before installing the applicable update.
  • Do not run registry-editing commands copied from a different Windows version or an unofficial script.
  • Do not repeatedly cancel a large download while Windows is installing updates; wait for the update and restart cycle to finish.
  • Do not disable firewall or proxy protection on a managed network to force a Store connection.
  • Keep the exact error code instead of relying on memory; a later change in the message can identify a different failure layer.

Microsoft’s own support wording is direct: “If you’re having issues installing a game, see Troubleshoot game installations on Windows 10.” Use the built-in sequence first, and reserve service removal for the narrowly defined Gaming Services case.

What is the shortest reliable checklist?

  1. Sign into Microsoft Store and Xbox with the same intended account and verify an active PC-eligible Game Pass plan.
  2. Install every available Windows update, update Store apps from Library > Get updates, and restart.
  3. Run wsreset.exe; then use Store Repair and, if necessary, Reset.
  4. Inspect Store downloads and retry from the game’s details page.
  5. For Gaming Services redirects or 0x80073D26/0x8007139F, follow the KB5004476 Windows 10 path and restart.
  6. If it still fails, use Microsoft’s exact administrator PowerShell workaround for Gaming Services, reinstall the component from the Store, and restart.
  7. Check firewall, proxy and Store-registration restrictions, especially on managed PCs.
  8. Record the final error code and system details before requesting support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an expired or different Game Pass plan remove the Install button?

Yes. A plan can remain visible in an account while a particular game is not included in that plan or is not eligible for PC installation in your region. Confirm the plan and the game’s PC entitlement with the same account shown in both the Store and Xbox app.

What if Windows Update does not offer KB5004476?

KB5004476 was an out-of-band fix for a specific June 11, 2021 Windows 10 incident and the listed OS builds. A later cumulative update may already include the correction; check Update history and your current build rather than forcing an unrelated package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I fix this on a work or school laptop without administrator access?

Often not. Store policies, proxy rules and Gaming Services registration may require administrator approval, so contact the device administrator with the exact code and the steps already attempted. Avoid bypassing security controls or deleting services yourself.

Why does the Store work for other apps but not for a Game Pass game?

Game Pass games can require Xbox identity checks and Gaming Services in addition to ordinary Store downloading. A functioning Store therefore does not rule out an entitlement mismatch or a Gaming Services failure; the redirect and hexadecimal code identify which path to investigate.

The Bottom Line

Start with account and entitlement checks, then update Windows and the Store, restart, and repair the Store cache. Use the KB5004476 and Gaming Services reinstallation path only for the documented Gaming Services errors, and investigate firewall, proxy or registration restrictions when the Store cannot reach its required endpoints.
