If you can’t join a Minecraft world, start with the edition and the type of game you’re trying to enter. For a friend-hosted Bedrock Edition world, both players generally need compatible game versions, multiplayer access, and an active online connection; the host must also have opened the world. Work through these checks in order before changing network settings. The official joining walkthrough cited here is for Bedrock, so menus and account steps may differ in Java Edition.

1. Confirm your edition and how the world is hosted

First find out whether you and your friend are playing Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, and whether the destination is a directly hosted world, a Realm, or a server. Do not assume that a Bedrock joining instruction applies to Java.

For a directly hosted Bedrock world, Minecraft’s joining flow uses the Friends tab and Minecraft friendship. A Realm works differently: guests can play without the Realm owner being online. Servers have their own access and connection requirements, so a friend-world invitation may not apply. See Minecraft’s Bedrock friend-world joining instructions and its multiplayer troubleshooting guidance.

2. Check that the host is available

If this is a friend’s directly hosted world, ask the host to open Minecraft and load the world. The world must be available for you to join, and both players need to be online at the same time. This is different from a Realm, which guests can access without the owner staying online.

3. Update both copies of Minecraft

Make sure you and the host are running compatible current versions. Different or outdated versions can prevent a multiplayer connection. On PC, check the Minecraft Launcher’s selected installation: a Preview or Snapshot may not match the regular release the other player is using. Update, launch the intended version, and try again.

4. Sign in to the correct Microsoft account

On Bedrock, Microsoft account sign-in provides access to multiplayer and related services. Confirm you are signed in to the account you intend to use, rather than a different profile or an expired session. Minecraft’s Microsoft account sign-in help covers account access issues.

Console players may also need to link the platform account to the Microsoft account used in Minecraft. For PlayStation, use the PlayStation account-linking guidance; for Switch, see Minecraft’s Nintendo Switch sign-in instructions.

5. Check multiplayer permissions on your account

Account-level privacy or family settings can block multiplayer even when the game and network appear to be working. This is particularly common with child accounts, but Minecraft’s troubleshooting guidance says permissions may be relevant beyond child accounts as well. Review the account’s multiplayer permissions and have the account organizer make any changes that are appropriate.

6. Ask the host to enable multiplayer and allow your access

For a Bedrock world, the host needs multiplayer enabled in the world’s settings. The host should also check that the world’s access settings permit you to join. If an invitation is needed, Minecraft’s invite-friends instructions for a Bedrock world describe adding a friend and inviting them through the in-game social controls. The page is localized, and Minecraft notes that translations may contain errors.

7. Verify that you are Minecraft friends and both online

For direct Bedrock joining, both players must be friends in Minecraft and online simultaneously. Open the Friends tab and check whether the host appears as joinable; only online friends appear there as available to join. If the host is missing, confirm the Minecraft friendship and ask the host to check that the world is open and multiplayer is enabled.

8. Confirm console online-play access

Console online play may require an active platform subscription. Minecraft’s guidance lists Xbox Game Pass Core, Nintendo Switch Online, or PlayStation Plus for online play on the corresponding console. Requirements and service availability can change, so check the current account or online-service page for your platform if you cannot access multiplayer.

9. Troubleshoot the network or a sign-in error

Only move on to network troubleshooting after checking versions, accounts, permissions, and world access. Minecraft’s official guidance flags custom DNS settings and ports as possible connection factors, even when other games or websites work. It does not establish one universal router change that fixes every failed join, so avoid unverified port numbers and do not disable security protections as a first step.

If the failure is a Microsoft sign-in error such as Drowned, refresh the account session, update Minecraft, and check the relevant platform’s service status before attempting more involved account recovery. Follow Minecraft’s Drowned error troubleshooting guidance.

Which kind of Minecraft game are you trying to join?

Game type Host availability How to approach joining
Friend-hosted Bedrock world The host needs to be online with the world open. Confirm Minecraft friendship, simultaneous online status, multiplayer enabled, and world access. Bedrock joining instructions.
Realm The owner does not need to be online for guests to play. Use the Realm’s access or invitation flow; the direct friend-world host requirement does not apply.
Server Not stated in the cited guidance. Follow that server’s own joining and access instructions; the friend-world checklist may not cover its requirements.
