First check whether the party is available to join; if you can enter it but voice chat fails, troubleshoot the connection or audio instead. PS5 and PS4 use different party menus, and Sony’s recommended steps depend on whether the party is missing, voice chat disconnects, or you cannot hear or speak.
Join a party on PS5 or PS4
| Console | Where to find the party | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Press the PS button, open Game Base, then select Parties > Joinable. | Select the party and choose Join Party or Request to Join. Only parties available to join appear in Joinable. Sony’s party and voice chat guide documents this flow. |
| PS4 | From the home screen, press up to open the function screen, then select Party. | Select the party from the list. Sony’s guide documents the PS4 party flow. |
If the party is not listed
Ask the host to confirm the party is active and that you have the intended invitation or access. A missing party is different from joining successfully and then losing voice chat; the available instructions do not identify why a particular party is absent.
If party voice chat disconnects
Sony’s voice-chat troubleshooting guidance addresses dropped party voice-chat connections and a flashing microphone icon. Work through the connection checks before changing router settings.
- Check the internet connection. On PS5, open Settings > Network > Settings > Set up Internet Connection. On PS4, open Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection. The PS4 path here is for setting up Wi-Fi. See PlayStation Connectivity Support for connection and update support.
- Try a wired connection if possible. Sony recommends this for voice-chat connection symptoms. It is an option to test, not a guaranteed fix.
- Restart the console and network equipment. Turn off the console and modem/router, wait five minutes, then turn them back on.
- Check PSN service availability. If the problem affects multiple online features or began suddenly, check current PlayStation Network status; service availability can change.
Ask your ISP about router ports only if needed
If you use a router and the voice-chat connection problem continues, Sony advises speaking with your internet service provider about opening ports. Sony’s dedicated voice-chat troubleshooting page lists TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480 and UDP 3478, 3479, 49152–65535. Its Games Support overview lists TCP 80, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480 and UDP 3478, 3479. The lists differ, so consult the dedicated voice-chat troubleshooting page with your ISP rather than assuming a port change is necessary or will fix the issue.

If you joined but cannot hear or speak
When you are already in the party, check audio settings rather than repeating party-joining steps. Sony’s voice-chat guidance covers microphone input and level on PS5, and audio-device selection, microphone level, and party/game chat priority on PS4.
- Confirm that the headset or controller microphone is not muted.
- Check that the intended microphone input and audio output device are selected, then review the microphone level.
- On PS4, check the party/game chat priority setting. Party voice chat and game audio cannot be output to both the headset and TV simultaneously.
When to contact PlayStation Support
If the party still does not appear or you cannot connect after the relevant steps, use PlayStation’s party and voice chat support and its connectivity support. Sony’s connectivity page also points to console software updates and PlayStation Repairs. The steps above narrow the symptom, but without the specific console, error message, and party behavior, they cannot determine a single cause.
