Capcom explored making PRAGMATA more horror-focused, but producer Masachika Kawata said the team set that idea aside because horror seemed too close to Resident Evil for a new series. That was an early direction considered during development—not evidence that the finished game began as a fully formed horror title.
Was PRAGMATA originally a horror game?
Not in any clearly established, formal sense. In a September 2026 interview-based feature for The Ringer, producer Masachika Kawata recalled that the team had considered one more horror-oriented approach. He said, “At one point, there was an idea to make something a little bit more horror focused.”

Kawata described it as an idea, not a fixed original genre or a formally announced version of the game. The distinction matters: the reporting supports saying Capcom considered a horror emphasis, not that PRAGMATA was once a completed survival-horror game.
Why did Capcom move away from horror?
Kawata said the team stepped back because horror felt too similar to the company’s established Resident Evil series, making it a less compelling fit for a new intellectual property. In The Ringer’s feature, he put it this way: “Stepping back a little, this was going to be a new series, a new IP, and so horror, which seems to have a lot in common with Resident Evil, didn’t seem like the most compelling use of the new title.”

- Out-of-This-World Adventure – Stranded on a lunar space station, Hugh encounters Diana, a mysterious android resembling a young girl. While searching for a way back to Earth, they fight to survive against Bots directed to “neutralize” intruders.
- Hack & Shoot – Use each character’s distinct abilities to take down enemies. In combat, Diana can hack foes to expose weaknesses so Hugh can blast them with weapons. This unique fusion of gameplay offers an action-packed experience like no other.
- Space Exploration – Teamwork also extends to traversing the station. Utilize the thrusters in Hugh’s futuristic suit to dash and hover around while Diana hacks security systems to solve puzzles. Only together can they overcome all obstacles.
- Collect and Customize – Gather materials while exploring the station to unlock upgrades, build out a diverse arsenal of weapons, obtain new outfits, and more. Once you’re ready, use the new gear in battle and take on even greater challenges!
- PRE-ORDER BONUS: Get the samurai-inspired Neo Bushido and ninja-themed Neo Kunoichi outfits.
His explanation is about creative distinctiveness: the team wanted the new series to offer something beyond an approach that seemed to overlap with Resident Evil. The account is interview-based reporting, not a Capcom announcement of a formal genre pivot.
How does that early idea compare with the released game?
Capcom’s public descriptions framed PRAGMATA as an action-adventure rather than announcing it as survival horror. Its June 2020 announcement called it an action-adventure set in a near-future dystopian world on the moon. In June 2025, Capcom described it as a sci-fi action-adventure starring spacesuit-clad Hugh and the android girl Diana.

Horror-coded imagery did not disappear entirely. The Ringer describes lumbering, zombielike robots among the enemies, but characterizes the combat as a “hack-and-shoot” system: Diana solves a Snake-like navigation puzzle to hack an enemy’s defenses, leaving Hugh to shoot its exposed weak point. That combination helps distinguish the final game’s action-adventure identity from the earlier horror-focused idea.

The Ringer reports that the 2020 reveal trailer showed a prototype. Lead producer Naoto Oyama said Hugh, Diana, and the lunar setting were already part of the project, while the eventual hack-and-shoot gameplay had not yet been devised.

According to Oyama’s account in the feature, the team experimented with the game from 2020 to 2023, then focused on refining it from 2023 through its 2026 release. This is a development timeline attributed to Oyama through The Ringer, rather than a timeline independently confirmed here by official development records.

Capcom’s public schedule moved over time. Its June 2020 announcement planned a 2022 release; in June 2025, the company said the game was planned for 2026. On December 12, 2025, Capcom set April 24, 2026 as the release date and added Nintendo Switch 2 to the announced platforms. The changing schedule does not, by itself, establish why the team reconsidered the game’s horror emphasis.
