The dependable way to beat her is mechanical: break both rotating skull shields, preserve the eight-hit curse counter above Rose, avoid the blood-pattern attacks, and use the stagger reported after her later rage phase as your main damage window.
Healing Rose’s ordinary health does not solve a depleted curse counter. Carmilla can trigger a lethal grab when that separate allowance reaches zero, even if the health bar still looks manageable.

Where the Carmilla fight takes place
Carmilla is the vampire encounter in the Library Observatory. Some boss-guide material gives her the Arcana identity “The Occultist.” That is a title for this encounter, not a second boss with a different moveset.
The fight is built around protection, positioning, and controlled damage rather than testing an elemental build. The available guide coverage is community-level rather than a clearly identified official database, so mechanics described as reported or disputed should not be treated as universal across every version without verification.

What Carmilla is actually vulnerable to
Her clearest vulnerabilities are openings created by the encounter itself. The rotating skull shields must be broken before you commit to direct damage, and the later rage sequence is followed by a reported stagger. Those are the reliable opportunities; an elemental matchup has not been established.
| Mechanic | Status | What it means in play |
|---|---|---|
| Rotating skull shields | Confirmed practical opening | Break both before treating Carmilla as exposed. |
| Curse counter above Rose | Eight-hit allowance reported by the encounter guide | Protect this resource separately from ordinary HP. |
| Rage transition | Reported, with disputed trigger point | Expect changing blood patterns rather than relying on a fixed percentage. |
| Post-rage stagger | Clearest reported damage window | Save your strongest reliable offense for the stagger. |
| Fire, ice, holy, or another element | Not confirmed | Do not rebuild your loadout around an assumed weakness. |
| Exact attack damage or one best loadout | Not established | Choose the setup you can control while moving and jumping. |
The number above Rose: an eight-hit curse counter
The number floating above Rose is not a second health bar. The encounter-specific guide describes it as an eight-hit curse counter that limits how many hits Rose can take under the curse mechanic. Blood attacks reduce that allowance, and reaching zero leads to a lethal grab.
This changes how you evaluate a mistake. A hit that looks survivable because Rose still has plenty of HP can nevertheless remove one of the limited curse hits. Ordinary healing addresses health damage; it is not a demonstrated way to refill the curse allowance. Treat the counter as the fight’s critical defensive resource.
How to protect the counter
- Move out of marked blood danger areas instead of accepting a projectile or spike to maintain position.
- Jump horizontal blood waves; absorbing them with HP also risks the curse allowance.
- During pillar patterns, keep moving through safe gaps rather than waiting for the attack to end in one place.
- When a pattern is unclear, choose survival and repositioning over a speculative attack.
- Do not use a health refill as permission to trade hits. A full-looking HP bar cannot compensate for a curse counter that is nearly empty.
Opening sequence: break both rotating skull shields
The first job is shield control. The guide instruction is explicit: break both rotating skull shields before damaging Carmilla directly. Until that requirement is met, forcing a damage exchange usually spends resources without creating the opening you need.

- Identify both skulls. Watch the orbiting shields and make sure you are attacking the shield objects, not merely striking at Carmilla while they remain active.
- Use repeatable attacks. Pick the attacks you can land consistently while still moving. No source establishes a special element or a required weapon, so reliability matters more than a theoretical matchup.
- Keep an escape route. Shield breaking does not suspend the blood patterns. Leave yourself room to jump a wave or move around a developing pillar pattern.
- Confirm both shields are gone. Do not switch to a damage plan after breaking only one. The opening requirement concerns both rotating skulls.
- Attack only after the opening is real. Once the shields have been removed, continue to respect the curse counter and wait for a safe attack cycle rather than trading through danger.
Carmilla’s attacks and the correct responses
The patterns are more important than raw damage figures. Available guides do not publish verified damage values or frame data, so the safest strategy is to answer each visual pattern with the appropriate movement.
| Attack pattern | What to watch for | Reliable response | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blood spikes | A marked or developing blood strike around your position | Leave the danger area before the hit resolves; do not stand in the warning zone to finish an attack. | Avoiding the pattern protects both HP and the curse allowance. |
| Blood waves | Horizontal waves traveling across the arena | Jump over each wave instead of trying to absorb it. | A wave hit can consume part of the limited curse resource. |
| Later blood pillars | Pillars appearing as the fight becomes more positional | Move between the pillars as the pattern develops, adjusting your position rather than freezing in one lane. | The gaps are the safe route; waiting for a clear arena can leave you trapped. |
| Slab smash | A heavy impact attack with a defined strike zone | Exit the impact area and wait for the recovery opening. | Trying to trade through the smash risks a costly curse hit for little gain. |
Blood spikes: treat the warning as a positioning test
Blood spikes are best handled before they become active. If the marked area is under Rose, move away rather than trying to complete a slow attack. The goal is not to prove that Rose can survive one hit; it is to preserve the finite curse allowance for mistakes you cannot avoid later.
Blood waves: jump, do not tank
The horizontal waves are a timing check. Jump over them and return to your preferred ground position afterward. Because the waves threaten the curse counter as well as ordinary health, a defensive jump is more valuable than squeezing in one extra ground hit.

Blood pillars: keep changing lanes
In the later portion of the encounter, blood pillars make the arena more positional. Read the pattern as it develops and move through the available gaps. Lateral repositioning is the answer; standing still and hoping the next pillar misses gives you fewer options as the sequence closes in.

Slab smash: vacate the impact zone
The slab smash has a clear danger area. Leave it, let the impact happen, and attack only when the recovery creates room. A forced trade is especially poor when your curse counter has already been reduced.
How the phases change
Opening phase: shields and curse management
At the start, concentrate on removing both skull shields while preserving Rose’s curse allowance. Blood spikes and waves can appear before you have created a meaningful damage window, so movement takes priority over damage racing.
Rage phase: changing blood patterns
Later, Carmilla is reported to enter a rage phase in which the blood patterns change and become more positional. The exact trigger is not verified. One guide result describes reports ranging from roughly one-third health to around half or higher, which is too wide a spread to use as a dependable threshold.

Do not stop fighting to wait for a particular HP percentage. Instead, recognize the transition by the altered pattern behavior: expect more demanding movement, especially around the later pillar sequences, and keep the curse counter intact while learning the new rhythm.

After rage: the reported stagger
After the rage phase, Carmilla is reported to stagger. This is the clearest damage opportunity described for the encounter. When the stagger appears, use the strongest offense you can execute consistently, then return to movement as soon as the opening ends. The stagger is a window, not evidence that every attack is safe for the remainder of the fight.
A complete, low-risk fight plan
- Enter with a movement-first mindset. Select attacks you can use without losing the ability to jump or reposition. There is no confirmed elemental requirement or universally optimal loadout.
- Track the counter above Rose from the first second. Regard eight curse hits as a finite budget, not as a number that ordinary healing will restore.
- Break the first skull shield. Keep moving whenever a blood warning appears, and do not let shield progress tempt you into standing in danger.
- Break the second skull shield. Confirm that both rotating skulls are gone before committing to direct damage.
- Answer each pattern correctly. Move out of spike zones, jump waves, pass between pillars, and leave the slab-smash impact area.
- Recognize rage without chasing a percentage. The threshold is disputed, so use the change in blood-pattern behavior as your cue to become more deliberate with positioning.
- Capitalize on the post-rage stagger. Spend your reliable damage during the reported stagger, then resume the defensive rhythm instead of forcing an extended combo.
Common failure states and fixes
“Rose still had health, but the fight ended in a grab.”
That usually means the curse counter reached zero. Review blood-wave, spike, and pillar contacts rather than only counting HP damage. The counter is an independent loss condition.
“My attacks connected, but Carmilla would not take meaningful damage.”
Check the skulls. Direct damage is not the opening priority until both rotating skull shields have been broken.

Move your jump timing earlier and clear the entire horizontal wave. Trying to squeeze in a hit while standing in its path turns a predictable pattern into a resource loss.

“The pillar sequence corners me.”
Start moving as the pattern develops instead of waiting for every pillar to appear. The safe route is the changing space between pillars, so preserve room to move before the next one forms.
“I cannot tell when rage starts.”
Do not anchor the transition to a specific health percentage. Reports disagree, and no single threshold is verified. Watch for the change to more positional blood patterns and adjust your movement accordingly.
“I keep dying while trying to punish the slab smash.”
Leave the impact zone first. The attack’s recovery is the opportunity; the impact itself is not a trade worth taking, especially with a reduced curse allowance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteClaims you should not build your strategy around
- Elemental weaknesses: No fire, ice, holy, or other weakness is confirmed for Carmilla.
- Exact damage numbers: The available guides do not establish verified values, so frame-specific damage claims would be version-dependent speculation.
- A universal best loadout: No single setup is demonstrated to outperform all others. Consistent shield breaking and movement are the meaningful criteria.
- A fixed rage percentage: Reported triggers vary from about one-third health to around half or higher; none is authoritative.
Reward context
Guide coverage associates Carmilla with the Blood Thorns card or reward. Treat that as a version-specific guide claim rather than an independently verified official database entry, and check the reward presentation in the edition you are playing.
Bottom line for the encounter
Approach Carmilla as a pattern-and-resource fight. Remove both rotating skull shields, protect the eight-hit curse counter above Rose, jump the waves, move through the pillars, clear the slab smash, and reserve decisive offense for the reported post-rage stagger. Everything beyond those mechanics—including an elemental weakness, exact damage figures, a best loadout, or one rage threshold—remains unconfirmed in the available coverage.
