For most newcomers, start with Castlevania Advance Collection, and play Aria of Sorrow first. Its open-ended map, equipment growth and Tactical Soul abilities provide the clearest introduction to the exploration-focused side of Castlevania. Buy Anniversary Collection instead for compact, stage-based action, or choose Dominus Collection for the Nintendo DS trilogy, modern conveniences and Haunted Castle Revisited.
The three Castlevania collections on Nintendo Switch
Nintendo’s Castlevania Collections Bundle groups the three major compilations available on Switch. They represent distinct eras and styles rather than three interchangeable greatest-hits packages.

| Collection | Games included | Switch release | Best match |
|---|---|---|---|
| Castlevania Anniversary Collection | Castlevania, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, Super Castlevania IV, Castlevania: The Adventure, Castlevania II: Belmont’s Revenge, Bloodlines and Kid Dracula | May 16, 2019 | Classic, stage-by-stage whip action |
| Castlevania Advance Collection | Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance, Aria of Sorrow and Dracula X | September 24, 2021 | Exploration, abilities and RPG-style progression |
| Castlevania Dominus Collection | Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin, Order of Ecclesia, Haunted Castle Revisited and the original Haunted Castle | August 27, 2024 | Later exploration games, DS systems and convenience features |
The practical dividing line is progression structure. Anniversary is mostly “Classicvania”: discrete levels, lives and pattern learning. Advance and Dominus are predominantly “Metroidvania”: a connected world, backtracking, character growth and abilities that open new routes. That difference matters more than release year when deciding what to buy first.
Choose by the kind of Castlevania you want
Pick Anniversary for traditional action
Anniversary traces the franchise’s origins across NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Mega Drive/Genesis and Famicom-era releases. Each game presents a sequence of stages rather than one large map. You concentrate on jump timing, enemy patterns, sub-weapons and boss routines, then move on to the next level.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This structure makes Anniversary the right first purchase if you want the original Castlevania feel: a focused run, a limited-life challenge and little inventory management. It is also the clearest choice for someone who specifically wants the early console games represented in one package. The included developer-and-artist eBook adds historical context without changing how the games play.
Pick Advance for exploration and a gentle introduction
Advance contains three Game Boy Advance exploration games and the more linear Dracula X. The collection’s centerpiece for a first-time player is Aria of Sorrow. Nintendo Life describes its Tactical Soul system as more manageable and balanced than the earlier ability system used in Circle of the Moon, and calls Aria of Sorrow one of the best games in the series.
In practical terms, you explore a large connected environment, defeat enemies for new powers, improve your equipment and return to previously inaccessible areas. The RPG elements give you reasons to experiment, while the map-based structure lets you recover from a difficult section by exploring elsewhere. That combination makes Advance the default recommendation when you have no prior Castlevania experience.

Pick Dominus for the Nintendo DS era
Dominus brings together Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia, then adds two versions of the arcade game Haunted Castle. The three main games each have a distinct hook: Soma Cruz creates weapons from captured souls in Dawn of Sorrow; Portrait of Ruin lets you switch between two heroes; and Shanoa absorbs glyphs in Order of Ecclesia.
It is also the most accommodating collection to play on modern hardware. Konami documents rewind, quick saves, regional-version switching, music playlists and an information compendium. Those options reduce the friction of older games and make Dominus attractive if you value experimentation or want to revisit the DS trilogy without original hardware.
Why Aria of Sorrow is the best first game for most people
A clear version of the exploration formula
Aria of Sorrow demonstrates the connected-map structure without requiring you to understand the entire history of the series. Movement, combat, equipment and ability collection are introduced inside one coherent adventure. The Tactical Soul system gives defeated enemies a chance to provide usable abilities, so combat is also a way to customize how you play.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

A better starting point than jumping directly to Dawn
Dawn of Sorrow follows Soma Cruz one year after Aria of Sorrow. You can play it independently, but the character and story continuity are more meaningful when Aria comes first. Starting with Aria also lets you learn Soma’s soul-based approach before the later game expands on it.

A useful order is:
- Aria of Sorrow: begin with the most approachable and polished exploration game in the set.
- Circle of the Moon: see an earlier take on the GBA formula and its more demanding ability system.
- Harmony of Dissonance: experience another variation on movement, map design and progression.
- Dracula X: finish with the package’s more linear bonus rather than treating it as a continuation of the exploration games.
This is an editorial play order, not an official chronology. You can switch games whenever you prefer a different pace.
What each collection actually feels like
| Question | Anniversary | Advance | Dominus |
|---|---|---|---|
| World structure | Separate stages | Mostly interconnected exploration, with Dracula X as a linear outlier | Interconnected exploration games plus two arcade-style Haunted Castle versions |
| Main progression | Timing, pattern recognition and stage completion | Abilities, equipment and RPG-style growth | Abilities and distinctive character systems, varying by game |
| Best first game | Castlevania for the original structure | Aria of Sorrow | Dawn of Sorrow after Aria of Sorrow, or Order of Ecclesia for a separate starting point |
| Primary trade-off | Less freedom and character development | The four games differ noticeably in feel and quality | Story continuity favors playing Aria first |
Which Switch Castlevania is most like Symphony of the Night?
If by “like Symphony of the Night” you mean an open map, ability-gated exploration and RPG-style customization, choose Advance Collection or Dominus Collection, not Anniversary. Aria of Sorrow is the strongest first recommendation because its Tactical Soul system and equipment progression are easy to understand while still offering meaningful experimentation.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Dominus continues that design in later games but varies it more aggressively. Dawn of Sorrow follows Aria’s Soma-centered approach, Portrait of Ruin builds around switching heroes, and Order of Ecclesia makes Shanoa’s glyph absorption central to combat and exploration. Anniversary can still be excellent, but its stage-based format is a different branch of the series rather than a direct substitute for Symphony of the Night.
When Anniversary is the smarter first purchase
- You want short, self-contained levels instead of a map that asks you to backtrack.
- You prefer learning enemy patterns and boss timing to managing equipment or abilities.
- You specifically want the NES, Super NES, Game Boy or Mega Drive/Genesis-era games.
- You enjoy a stricter old-school challenge with limited lives and a restart-oriented structure.
Anniversary’s historical breadth is its main attraction. It lets you compare how the formula changed across several hardware generations, while the eBook supplies developer and artist material about that history.

- You want all three Nintendo DS-era exploration games in one collection.
- You value rewind and quick saves when learning difficult rooms or bosses.
- You want to compare regional versions, listen to the music separately or consult an in-game information compendium.
- You are interested in Haunted Castle Revisited, the redrawn version of the arcade game, as well as the original Haunted Castle.
Dominus launched on Switch on August 27, 2024. Its convenience features make it the easiest package to approach casually, but starting with Dawn of Sorrow means beginning in the middle of Soma’s story. Play Aria of Sorrow first if that continuity matters to you.

A simple buying decision
- Want classic stages and whip-focused action? Buy Anniversary Collection.
- Want the safest first step into exploration Castlevania? Buy Advance Collection and launch Aria of Sorrow.
- Want the DS trilogy or the newest convenience features? Buy Dominus Collection.
- Want to follow Soma Cruz’s story? Play Aria of Sorrow before Dawn of Sorrow.
- Still undecided? Start with Advance; move to Dominus for more exploration systems, then try Anniversary when you want the classic stage format.
Playing comfortably on Switch
All three collections are designed around standard Switch play. Dominus supports handheld, tabletop and TV modes, and Nintendo lists the Switch Pro Controller as compatible. A full-size controller is optional, but it can make precise movement and repeated boss attempts more comfortable in TV or tabletop play.
For a first session, use the collection’s save options where available, map your progress regularly and resist judging an exploration game by the first area alone. Its appeal develops as new abilities connect previously separated sections of the map. Conversely, treat Anniversary’s limited-life structure as part of the intended challenge rather than expecting the recovery loop of a Metroidvania.
Final recommendation by player type
| If you are… | Start with… | Then consider… |
|---|---|---|
| New to Castlevania | Advance Collection, beginning with Aria of Sorrow | Dominus Collection |
| A fan of classic action games | Anniversary Collection | Dracula X in Advance for another linear challenge |
| Looking for a Symphony of the Night-style experience | Aria of Sorrow | Dawn of Sorrow and Order of Ecclesia |
| Interested in Soma Cruz’s narrative | Aria of Sorrow | Dawn of Sorrow |
| Focused on preservation and modern controls | Dominus Collection | Its rewind, quick-save, regional and music options |
The short version is straightforward: Advance Collection is the best all-purpose entry point, with Aria of Sorrow as the first game to launch. Anniversary is the specialist choice for classic stage action, while Dominus is the specialist choice for the DS trilogy and the most modern feature set.
