If Windows says “This application failed to start because ccpxyevt.dll was not found,” the missing file is ccpxyevt.dll. You may also see “The program can’t start because ccpxyevt.dll is missing from your computer.”
Other reported messages include:
- “Error loading ccpxyevt.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “A required component is missing: ccpxyevt.dll. Please install the application again.”
- “The file ccpxyevt.dll is missing or corrupted.”
The 60-second answer
ccpxyevt.dll is a legacy Symantec Common Client file, not a Windows component. Its internal description is Common Client Proxy Event Factory, and public file metadata associates it with Common Client and Symantec Corporation.

Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website or copy it into System32 or SysWOW64. The reliable fix is to identify the Symantec or Norton-era program that originally installed the shared Common Client files, then repair or reinstall that complete program from its original installer or an official enterprise package.
If the error appeared after an antivirus quarantine, verify the detection before restoring anything. If the message says that a module could not be found, another dependency may be missing instead of, or in addition to, ccpxyevt.dll.

What is ccpxyevt.dll?
A DLL is a shared program library. Applications load DLLs when they need particular functions, rather than carrying every function inside their own executable.
ccpxyevt.dll was part of Symantec’s Common Client software. The name “Proxy Event Factory” describes an internal component that creates or brokers event-related objects for the Common Client framework. It does not describe a standalone Windows feature that users should install separately.
Public inventories report an old Common Client build as 2.0.2.806, with a file size of approximately 292,000 bytes. Those details are historical third-party metadata, not a current Symantec manifest. Public listings also disagree about the architecture, so do not use an online listing to decide whether your copy should be 32-bit or 64-bit.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The filename alone cannot establish which Symantec product installed it. It may have been included with an older Norton or Symantec application, an enterprise Endpoint Protection deployment, or another product that used Symantec Common Client components.
Is it part of Windows?
No. ccpxyevt.dll is not a normal Windows system file, Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable file, DirectX component, or .NET component.
That distinction matters because Windows repair tools can repair protected Microsoft files, but they will not normally recreate a deleted third-party Symantec DLL. The owning Symantec application must usually be repaired or reinstalled.
What caused the error?
The likely causes are:
| Likely cause | What usually resolves it |
|---|---|
| Damaged Common Client installation | Repair the owning Symantec program |
| Symantec or Norton upgrade removed a shared file | Reinstall the original product or migrate to a supported product |
| Antivirus quarantine | Review Protection History and reinstall the signed package |
Missing dependency of ccpxyevt.dll |
Repair the application and inspect its diagnostics |
| 32-bit application on 64-bit Windows | Reinstall the matching application package |
| Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Failed update or installation | Reinstall the product, or use System Restore when appropriate |
The timing often provides the first clue. Ask what changed immediately before the failure:

- Was an older product upgraded?
- Did an antivirus scan quarantine a file?
- Was a program moved manually to another folder?
- Did a Windows update or failed installer interrupt setup?
- Does the error appear for one old application or during Windows sign-in?
If only one old application fails, start with that application. If the message appears while a Symantec service starts, repair the Symantec installation instead.
Step 1: Identify the program that is failing
Before replacing anything, identify the executable that produces the message.
- Close the error dialog.
- Start the affected application again and note its name.
- Right-click the application shortcut and choose Properties.
- On the Shortcut tab, note the Target path.
- If the shortcut points to a missing file, open Task Manager by pressing
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. - Select Details and look for the program name while reproducing the error.
- Record the application name, executable path, full error text, and when the problem began.
If the path points to an old Symantec or Norton installation directory, repair that product. If it belongs to another application, repair that application first rather than installing Symantec files globally.
Do not assume that the first program you remember installing is the owner. Shared components can remain after one product is removed and still be requested by another legacy program.

Step 2: Repair the original Symantec or Norton installation
Repairing the complete application restores the correct version, related files, registry entries, services, and dependencies together.
Use Programs and Features
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Find the Symantec, Norton, or related Common Client product.
- Select it and choose Change, Repair, or Modify.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the application that reported the error.
If the program opens normally and the error does not return, the repair worked.
If no repair option is available:
- Return to Programs and Features.
- Select the affected product.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart when prompted.
- Reinstall using the original media, your organization’s deployment package, or an official package supplied by Broadcom or the product administrator.
- Restart again before testing the application.
Do not uninstall managed Endpoint Protection software from an office computer without contacting the administrator. Enterprise products may depend on policy, management servers, certificates, and deployment settings that a local reinstall cannot restore.
Use Windows app repair when available
Some applications expose a Windows repair option:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Test the application.
If Repair does not exist, use Reset only when you understand that it may remove application settings or local data. For older Symantec software, the original installer or a complete reinstall is generally more useful than a Windows app reset.
How to tell whether reinstalling is the right repair
A complete reinstall is appropriate when:
- The program appears in the installed-program list but its repair fails.
- The installation directory is incomplete.
- The error began immediately after uninstalling or upgrading Symantec software.
- The installer reports missing shared components.
- The product is still supported and compatible with your version of Windows.
If the product is obsolete, do not force an old security application to run indefinitely on a current Windows installation. Ask the administrator or vendor for a supported replacement. Reinstalling a legacy product may restore the DLL while leaving the larger compatibility and security problem unresolved.
Step 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed, isolated, or blocked a file. Treat quarantine as a possibility, not proof that the detection was a false positive.
Check Microsoft Defender Protection History
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review detections related to the time the error began.
- Open a relevant event and inspect the detected path, threat name, publisher, and action taken.
Microsoft Defender’s Protection History does not retain events indefinitely, so an older quarantine may no longer appear.
Restore a file only when all of the following are true:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- It came from the original Symantec installation.
- Its path is a normal Symantec application directory.
- Its digital signature identifies the expected publisher.
- The detection has been reviewed and is understood.
- Your organization’s security policy permits restoration.
To inspect a file without trusting its name:
- Right-click the file and choose Properties.
- Check the General tab for its location.
- Open Digital Signatures if that tab is present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and an expected publisher.
- Scan the file again with your security software.
A copy in Downloads, a temporary folder, a user profile, or an unrelated application directory deserves additional scrutiny. The name ccpxyevt.dll is not proof that the file is genuine.
Prefer repairing or reinstalling the complete signed Symantec package instead of restoring an isolated DLL. That approach also replaces related files that may have been damaged or removed.
Step 4: Check whether another dependency is missing
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may have found ccpxyevt.dll but failed to load a DLL that it depends on.
This is especially likely when:
ccpxyevt.dllexists in the application directory.- Replacing the file changes the error but does not start the program.
- The application was copied from another computer.
- The error appears after an incomplete installer run.
- The program is old and uses components no longer present on the computer.
First, run the owning application’s repair option. If that fails, use the application vendor’s diagnostics or a reputable dependency-analysis tool to identify the missing module. Do not repeatedly copy random DLLs into Windows folders.
Check the application architecture
A 32-bit program can require 32-bit dependencies even when it runs on 64-bit Windows. Conversely, a 64-bit program needs 64-bit dependencies.
You can inspect the application’s installation directory and installer documentation, but do not infer the architecture from the operating system alone. Public listings for ccpxyevt.dll are inconsistent on this point, so the actual installer and file must be treated as authoritative.
Never copy the same DLL into both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. These folders serve different architecture roles on 64-bit Windows, and manual placement can create version conflicts.
Step 5: Install a runtime only when the error identifies it
ccpxyevt.dll is not a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable filename. Do not install Visual C++ merely because an application reports a missing DLL.

Install a Microsoft runtime only when the complete error names a runtime such as:
MSVCP*.dllMSVCR*.dllVCRUNTIME*.dll
Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable package and match its architecture to the application. A 32-bit application commonly requires the x86 package even on 64-bit Windows.
After installing the explicitly named runtime:
- Restart Windows.
- Start the affected application.
- If the same
ccpxyevt.dllerror remains, return to repairing the owning application. - If a different dependency is named, record it rather than downloading several unrelated DLLs.
Installing DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ without an error identifying that runtime is unlikely to restore a Symantec Common Client file.

Use Windows repair tools when other system problems are present, such as damaged protected files, update failures, or several unrelated applications failing.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish and test the application again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks and repairs protected Windows system files. Neither command normally recreates a missing third-party Symantec DLL. If the application still reports ccpxyevt.dll, repair or reinstall the application that owns it.
Running the commands in the opposite order is less useful when the component store itself is damaged. Use DISM first, then SFC.
If you repeatedly run SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying problems and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and reinstalling the Symantec application remains the definitive fix for this file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStep 7: Check updates and drivers when the failure followed a system change
A driver is not the usual owner of ccpxyevt.dll, but a failed system update or a damaged security-product integration can expose an existing application problem.
First install normal Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
Use Device Manager only when the error is accompanied by a device problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Do not expect Device Manager to restore ccpxyevt.dll. It is an application component, not a normal Windows hardware driver.
When a machine has several stale or mismatched drivers, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify them instead of making you hunt through multiple hardware vendors; the full version performs driver installation, while repairing the owning Symantec application remains necessary for ccpxyevt.dll.
Step 8: Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix
regsvr32 ccpxyevt.dll is not a standard remedy for this file.
regsvr32 is designed for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically for certain COM or ActiveX components. A Common Client library is not normally a self-registering COM/ActiveX control. Running the command may produce an error stating that the entry point is missing, or it may give the impression that registration was attempted without repairing the installation.
Use regsvr32 only when the application’s official documentation specifically says that the exact DLL must be registered and identifies the correct command. Do not register random downloaded copies.
Step 9: Use System Restore only for a suitable rollback
System Restore can help when the failure began after a failed installation or system change and a restore point predates the problem.
- Open the Start menu.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Complete the restore and restart Windows.
- Test the application.
System Restore normally does not remove personal files, but it can roll back installed programs, drivers, settings, and system files. If reinstalling the owning application is practical, that is usually the more direct and repeatable repair.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
A DLL download site may provide:
- The wrong historical version
- The wrong architecture
- A file with incompatible exported functions
- An unsigned or modified file
- Malware disguised with a familiar filename
- A file that still lacks its dependencies
Even a genuine file copied into the wrong directory can make troubleshooting harder. It may allow one program to start while leaving the installation inconsistent, or it may create a version conflict with another application.
The safe sources are the original Symantec or Norton installation media, your organization’s approved deployment package, the product’s official installer, and official Broadcom enterprise software channels. Microsoft’s sites are appropriate for Windows updates, system repair instructions, and explicitly identified Microsoft runtimes. None of those sources requires copying an isolated DLL into a Windows system directory.
If the repair still fails
Collect these details before escalating:
- The exact error text
- The executable that launches the error
- The full path of that executable
- The Windows 10 or Windows 11 version
- The Symantec or Norton product name
- The installed product version, if shown
- Whether the issue began after removal, upgrade, quarantine, or update
- Whether
ccpxyevt.dllexists and where it is located - The result of the digital-signature check
- Any new dependency named after repair
For a managed Endpoint Protection installation, send this information to the administrator or Broadcom support team. The correct repair may require the organization’s management console or a specific deployment package.

Is ccpxyevt.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Symantec Common Client software and is not normally supplied by Windows.
Which product installed ccpxyevt.dll?
The filename alone cannot identify the exact product. It was associated with Symantec Common Client components, which could have been included in different legacy Symantec or Norton-era products.
Can I download ccpxyevt.dll separately?
You should not. A separate download may be malicious, mismatched, unsigned, or unable to satisfy the DLL’s dependencies. Repair or reinstall the complete application that originally installed it.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. Do not copy it to System32, SysWOW64, or both. The correct location depends on the owning application and its architecture.

The filename has a legitimate historical association with Symantec, but the name alone does not prove that a particular file is safe. Check its path, digital signature, hash, antivirus result, and provenance.
Will Microsoft Defender Protection History show the missing file?
It may, if Defender quarantined it recently. Protection History retains events for a limited period, so an older event may no longer be visible.
Should I install Visual C++?
Only if the complete error identifies a Microsoft runtime such as MSVCP, MSVCR, or VCRUNTIME. ccpxyevt.dll itself is not a Visual C++ Redistributable filename.
Does regsvr32 fix this error?
Usually not. Common Client libraries are not normally self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs. Repair the owning application instead.
What is the best fix?
Find the program that launches the error and repair or reinstall that program using its original or official installer. That restores the correct Common Client files and related dependencies together.
