A CHKDSK screen that appears stuck is often still working, especially when you used /r on a large hard disk. Microsoft gives no universal number of minutes or hours at which a scan becomes a confirmed hang, so do not force a shutdown solely because the percentage has not moved. First determine which switch you launched, whether Windows still responds, and whether the same disk errors return.
Microsoft’s documented advice is that interrupting CHKDSK is not recommended. If you already stopped it, the stated expectation is that the interruption alone should not leave the volume more corrupt than before; running CHKDSK again checks for and should repair remaining corruption. Repeated failures, a completely unresponsive computer, or signs of storage trouble call for data preservation and a check of the drive subsystem, hardware and connections.

Why does CHKDSK look stuck?
CHKDSK can spend a long time on one displayed percentage without proving that the command has frozen. The work depends on the operation selected, the size of the volume and the storage device. Microsoft specifically warns that /r on a large hard-disk drive can take considerable time because it reads every sector.
There is no official “stuck after X hours” rule. A stationary progress display is only one symptom. A scan that is slowly reading a large disk is different from a scan that has left the entire computer unresponsive, repeatedly reports the same errors, or fails in the same phase every time.

Signs that the scan may still be running
- The command window remains open and Windows still responds to ordinary input.
- The computer can switch windows or otherwise react, even if the CHKDSK percentage has not changed.
- The drive activity indicator shows continuing access. This is a clue, not a guarantee, because indicators vary by hardware.
- The command eventually advances after a long pause, particularly during a full sector scan.
Signs of a broader problem
- The whole system stops responding, not just the CHKDSK display.
- The scan repeatedly ends with errors or cannot complete after a rerun.
- Windows reports other disk errors, files become unreadable, or the drive disappears.
- The same behavior occurs across multiple attempts on the same volume.
These signs do not identify a failed drive by themselves. They tell you when to move from “wait and observe” to preserving data and checking the storage path.
Which CHKDSK switch did you run?
The command matters more than the word “CHKDSK.” A read-only check, a logical repair and a bad-sector scan perform different work and have different time and locking requirements.

| Command | What it does | Volume and time implications |
|---|---|---|
chkdsk X: |
Reports file-system status without fixing errors. | It is the least invasive option, but it does not repair corruption. |
chkdsk X: /f |
Fixes logical file-system errors. | The volume must be locked. If it is the active Windows volume, Windows can schedule the check for the next restart. |
chkdsk X: /r |
Locates bad sectors, attempts to recover readable information and includes the repairs performed by /f. |
It can take considerable time on a large hard disk because it reads every sector. It also requires a lock or a restart schedule when the volume is in use. |
chkdsk X: /i or chkdsk X: /c |
Skips specified NTFS checks to reduce the amount of checking. | These options perform less vigorous checking and are not universal cures for a display that appears stuck. |
Replace X: with the affected drive letter. The exact syntax and switch behavior are documented in Microsoft’s CHKDSK command reference for Windows 10, Windows 11 and supported Windows Server editions.
Should you interrupt a slow CHKDSK?
No—not as a first response to an unchanged percentage. Microsoft’s command documentation states, “Interrupting chkdsk isn’t recommended.” Let the command continue when the computer is otherwise responsive and there is no immediate sign of a failing or disconnected drive.
The recommendation is not a promise that hardware failure or data loss is impossible. A disk that is failing can stop responding during any operation, and a forced power-off can create additional problems if Windows is also writing elsewhere. Treat the documented expectation as guidance, not as a guarantee against physical failure.

If you already stopped the scan
Microsoft says that cancellation or interruption should not leave the volume more corrupt than it was before, and that running CHKDSK again checks the volume and should repair remaining corruption. After Windows is stable, rerun the same appropriate command rather than assuming the first interruption completed the job.
If the machine became unstable, files disappeared or the drive is no longer consistently visible, prioritize copying important data to independent storage before repeated repair attempts. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance notes that data may need to be restored from backup when CHKDSK does not fix disk errors.
How do you rerun CHKDSK safely?
Use an administrator command window and choose the least aggressive operation that answers your question. A read-only check can show status; /f is for logical repair; /r adds a full bad-sector search and recovery attempt.
- Preserve important files first. If the volume is readable, copy irreplaceable saves, documents and recordings to independent storage. An external drive can serve as a backup destination; it is not a repair for a hanging scan.
- Open an elevated terminal. In Windows, open Windows Terminal, Command Prompt or PowerShell with administrator privileges. Without elevation, repair operations may fail because CHKDSK cannot obtain the required access.
- Identify the volume. Confirm the drive letter shown in File Explorer or Disk Management so you do not scan the wrong partition. For a status-only check, use
chkdsk X:. - Run the required repair. Use
chkdsk X: /ffor logical errors. Usechkdsk X: /ronly when a sector check and recovery attempt are justified; it does substantially more reading. - Accept a restart schedule when Windows asks. The active system volume cannot normally be locked while Windows is running. Scheduling the check for the next restart is expected behavior, not evidence that the command failed.
- Allow the scheduled scan to complete. Do not use an arbitrary time limit. Judge progress by overall system responsiveness, repeated failures and storage symptoms rather than a single percentage.
- Record the result. Note the command, drive letter, reported errors and exit code. This information helps distinguish a one-time logical repair from a recurring storage problem.
What do CHKDSK exit codes mean?
Microsoft documents these values as command results. They are not percentages, reliability scores or a diagnosis of the drive’s remaining life.
| Exit code | Documented meaning |
|---|---|
| 0 | No errors were found. |
| 1 | Errors were found and fixed. |
| 2 | Cleanup was performed, or cleanup was not performed because /f was not specified. |
| 3 | The disk could not be checked, errors could not be fixed, or errors were not fixed because /f was absent. |
An exit code of 0 does not establish that a drive will never fail, and code 3 does not by itself prove that the disk is physically dead. Repeated code 3 results, unreadable data or disappearing volumes are reasons to investigate the storage subsystem instead of repeatedly launching the same scan.

What if the entire computer freezes during CHKDSK?
Separate a slow CHKDSK display from a whole-computer freeze. Microsoft’s general Windows freeze guidance starts with checking whether the system is responsive and, after recovery, reviewing system and application logs.
When Windows still responds
Leave CHKDSK running and avoid starting additional disk-intensive work on the same volume. Do not launch games, move large files or begin another repair scan while the current operation is active; those actions can compete for the same storage resources and make the display harder to interpret.
When Windows does not respond
Give the system a chance to recover and note what happened: whether the pointer moved, whether windows reacted and whether the drive activity changed. If you ultimately have to recover from the freeze, restart normally when possible, then review the system and application logs for entries around the time of the event. Those records can show whether Windows saw a storage, controller or file-system error, although they are not a substitute for hardware testing.
After recovery, do not immediately assume that another long /r run is the best next step. First preserve accessible data and check whether the same volume is repeatedly generating errors.

What should you do when CHKDSK keeps hanging or errors return?
Repeated trouble changes the question from “Is this scan slow?” to “Why is this storage path unreliable?” Microsoft recommends checking the disk subsystem, hardware state and storage connections when disk errors persist.

Preserve data before diagnosis
Copy the most important files while the drive is still readable. Keep the copy on independent storage and verify that critical game saves or other irreplaceable files open from the backup. If CHKDSK cannot fix the errors, Microsoft’s guidance is to restore data from backup rather than treating another scan as a recovery plan.
Evaluate the physical path
Have the drive, controller or enclosure and the storage connections examined. A loose or damaged connection can resemble a failing disk, while a failing disk can continue to produce errors after a cable is replaced. The correct remedy depends on which component is actually at fault.
Decide whether replacement is justified
Do not replace a drive solely because one progress screen paused. Replacement becomes a practical consideration when diagnosis identifies failing hardware, the disk repeatedly disappears or errors continue after the connection and software causes have been addressed. Choose hardware that is compatible with the computer’s storage interface and capacity needs; a backup destination and a replacement system drive serve different roles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan /i or /c make a hanging scan finish?
On NTFS volumes, /i and /c can reduce checking time by skipping specified checks, but they deliberately perform less vigorous checking. They may be useful when an administrator has decided that a lighter examination is appropriate, not as a blanket fix for every apparent hang.
They do not replace /f when logical repairs are needed, and they do not provide the bad-sector search and readable-data recovery attempt supplied by /r. Choosing a faster command means accepting a narrower examination.

How does this apply to a game-library drive?
CHKDSK repairs or reports file-system problems; it is not a game-performance optimizer. A successful scan does not guarantee faster loading, higher frame rates or a healthier drive if the underlying hardware is deteriorating.
If the game library is on a secondary volume, use that drive letter in the command and avoid writing new installations to it while repairs are in progress. Preserve save files and configuration data separately because reinstalling a game does not recreate every local save. If the volume repeatedly vanishes or returns errors, treat the incident as a storage reliability problem rather than a game-client problem.

- Using a fixed time limit. No Microsoft source establishes a universal duration for declaring CHKDSK hung, so “stop it after two hours” is not a reliable rule.
- Choosing
/rautomatically. It reads every sector and can take considerable time on a large HDD. Use it when the additional sector check and recovery attempt are warranted. - Repeating scans without a backup. If the drive is failing, more reads do not replace a second copy of important data.
- Treating an external drive as a cure. It is useful as an independent backup destination, but it cannot repair the source volume or remove the cause of a hang.
- Assuming a clean exit code proves hardware health. The codes describe that run’s result; they are not a long-term hardware assessment.
- Ignoring connections and hardware. Persistent disk errors require attention to the disk subsystem, the device itself and the physical storage connections.
What is known about Windows versions and timing?
The Microsoft CHKDSK command reference applies to Windows 10, Windows 11 and Windows Server versions listed in that documentation. The available guidance does not establish a version-specific recovery sequence for every apparent stall, a phase-specific timeout or a universal elapsed-time threshold.
Use the symptoms you can observe—responsiveness, repeatability, error messages and signs of storage trouble—to choose between waiting, rerunning, preserving data and arranging hardware evaluation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does CHKDSK exit code 3 mean my drive is definitely dead?
No. Code 3 means the disk could not be checked, errors could not be fixed, or repairs were not attempted because /f was missing. It is a reason to investigate the storage path and protect your data, not a standalone hardware verdict.
Why does Windows schedule CHKDSK for the next restart?
Repair switches need the volume locked. Windows cannot normally lock its active system volume while it is running, so scheduling the check before startup is the expected way to obtain exclusive access.
Are /i and /c safe to use on any drive?
They are NTFS-specific options that skip some checks to reduce work. Because they perform less vigorous checking, they should be chosen only when a lighter examination is acceptable, not used as a universal hang workaround.
Will CHKDSK make my games load faster?
Only file-system errors that were slowing access may be corrected; CHKDSK is not a performance-tuning tool. It cannot compensate for a failing drive, a bad connection or other hardware limits.
