Choose a Humblewood species by starting with the character you want to imagine, then use its listed ability emphasis and signature traits to narrow your options. There is no universally best species: a clever investigator, a mobile hunter, and a community-minded helper need different things from their ancestry. This guide compares the ten birdfolk and humblefolk species in the original Humblewood Campaign Setting. Before you settle on one, confirm with your Dungeon Master which Humblewood books and D&D rules version the campaign allows.

The ability emphases and trait names in this table summarize the current D&D Beyond species listing; they are not a substitute for the full rules text. Check the version and character options your Dungeon Master has approved before applying them to a build.

What species are available in Humblewood?

The original Humblewood Campaign Setting has ten playable species: five birdfolk and five humblefolk. They are animal-inspired people from Everden, a woodland setting whose original campaign follows a spreading-fire threat and includes an adventure for levels 1 through 5.

Humblewood is an unofficial D&D campaign setting created under the Open Gaming License, according to publisher Hit Point Press. The publisher describes it as beginner-friendly while also offering complexity for experienced players. That combination makes species choice a useful way to establish a character’s identity, but it does not mean any one species is intended as the correct choice for a new player.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The ten species below are the original core options, not the full current Humblewood line. Hit Point Press also lists six Wesfolk species—Capran, Eluran, Mustel, Seeta, Sylph, and Tilia. Humblewood Tales expands the setting with a sourcebook and adventure anthology. Ask whether those additional options are permitted; do not assume every Humblewood book is part of a campaign using only the original setting.

How should I choose a Humblewood species?

Use the character concept to make the first cut, then compare the remaining species by their listed traits, likely role in the group, and fit with the campaign’s rules. This order helps you avoid choosing a species only because one ability emphasis looks favorable on paper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Picture the character. Decide what makes them distinctive before choosing mechanics: an observant crow-like investigator, a nocturnal owl-like guardian, a determined deer-like traveler, or a fox-like schemer are clear starting concepts.
  2. Identify the parts of play you care about. Is the character mainly defined by exploration, mobility, social interaction, support, durability, or combat? A trait that matters in the kind of scenes you enjoy is more useful to your concept than one that merely sounds impressive.
  3. Read the species package as a whole. Compare its listed ability emphasis with its named traits. For example, a Raptor’s listing combines Dexterity emphasis with hunting and senses traits, while a Jerbeen pairs Dexterity emphasis with leaping, nimbleness, and team-oriented traits.
  4. Check rules and source permissions. Ask which rules version and Humblewood books the Dungeon Master is using. This matters especially if you have found an older character guide or ability-score advice.
  5. Look for a party gap, if one exists. A scout, support character, durable frontliner, or social specialist can help the group, but party needs should refine your choice rather than replace the character you want to roleplay.
  6. Compare two finalists in actual scenes. Imagine each in a conversation, a journey, and a difficult encounter. Which one gives you more ways to contribute and still feels interesting when combat is not happening?

Which birdfolk species fits my character?

All five birdfolk species have Glide in the current listing, giving them a shared aerial identity. Their other listed traits and ability emphases distinguish their concepts; the presence of Glide alone does not make them interchangeable.

Corvum: the observant investigator

Corvum are crow-like birdfolk with a listed +2 Intelligence emphasis, Glide, talons, Learned, and Appraising Eye. They are a natural starting point for a scholar, tactician, investigator, or character whose first instinct is to notice and interpret details. That is a concept match, not a claim that Corvum are mechanically required for any particular class.

When considering Corvum, ask whether you want observation and cleverness to be part of the character’s identity. If you mainly want an agile hunter or a character with a strong community-support theme, compare Raptor, Jerbeen, or Gallus before deciding.

Gallus: the practical community member

Gallus are chicken- or rooster-like birdfolk with a listed +2 Wisdom emphasis. Their package includes Glide, Wing Flap, Communal, Militia Training, and Of the People. Those names and the publisher’s species descriptions make Gallus a strong starting point for a community leader, practical helper, or guardian whose sense of self is tied to belonging.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gallus may suit a character who steps up for neighbors or helps a group work together. If you want a more agile, small-scale team-player concept, compare Jerbeen; if the central idea is unusual charisma or fate, look at Luma instead.

Luma: the expressive or fate-marked character

Luma are dove- or pigeon-like birdfolk with a listed +2 Charisma emphasis, Glide, Wing Flap, Touched, and Fated. Consider them for a charismatic, mystical, unusual, or destiny-marked character. Their listed traits give you story prompts as well as mechanics: decide what being “Touched” or “Fated” means to the individual in your campaign rather than assuming a backstory on their behalf.

If the character’s appeal is primarily spell-oriented or tied to the forest, compare Hedge. If their social presence is more about guile and negotiation than fate, Vulpin may be a better concept fit.

Raptor: the hunter and mobile scout

Raptors resemble hawks, eagles, or other birds of prey. Their listed +2 Dexterity emphasis comes with Glide, talons, Keen Senses, Woodland Hunter, and Hunter’s Training. This package makes Raptor a clear starting point for a mobile scout, hunter, or ranger-like character.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Raptor when sharp senses and a hunting identity are central to the character. Jerbeen is another Dexterity-emphasis option, but its listing points more toward leaping, nimbleness, and teamwork; Corvum can suit a scout whose defining strength is observation and analysis.

Strig: the imposing or nocturnal guardian

Strig are owl-like birdfolk with a listed +2 Strength emphasis, Glide, talons, Darkvision, and Patterned Feathers. They are a natural starting point for a physically imposing guardian, warrior, or nocturnal character. Of the birdfolk options in the current listing, Strig combine the listed Strength emphasis with Darkvision.

Consider how the owl-like identity shapes the character’s appearance, habits, and place in the community. If physical endurance matters more to the concept than imposing strength, compare Cervan or Mapach; if aerial hunting is the defining feature, compare Raptor.

Which humblefolk species fits my character?

The five humblefolk options offer distinct ways to play a woodland character who is not birdfolk. Their listings emphasize endurance, defense, agility, resourcefulness, or social and intellectual cleverness, so it helps to compare both their traits and the role you want them to have in the story.

Cervan: the enduring traveler

Cervan are deer-like humblefolk with a listed +2 Constitution emphasis, Practical, and Surge of Vigor. They are a sensible starting point for a durable character, a determined traveler, or a hero whose defining strength is endurance. The listing’s Constitution emphasis and Vigor trait make the species worth considering if persistence is more central to your fantasy than quickness or trickery.

Compare Cervan with Strig if you picture a physically strong guardian, or with Mapach if you want a resourceful explorer whose resilience is paired with climbing and improvisation.

Hedge: the defensive or forest-magic character

Hedge are hedgehog-like humblefolk with listed +2 Charisma and +1 Wisdom emphasis. Their package includes Natural Burrowers, Spiny Quills, Curl Up, Forest Magic, and Speak With Bugs. Consider Hedge for a diplomatic, magical, empathetic, or unusually defensive character.

The range of traits supports several different concepts, so choose the part that most interests you rather than treating Hedge as a single fixed archetype. If the focus is a mystical or forest-connected identity, Hedge is an obvious candidate; for a charismatic character defined more by guile, compare Vulpin or Luma.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Jerbeen: the agile team player

Jerbeen are small, mouse-like humblefolk with listed +2 Dexterity and +1 Charisma emphasis. Their traits include Standing Leap, Nimbleness, Take Heart, and Team Tactics. They are a good starting point for an agile skirmisher, an upbeat hero, or a character whose strengths include helping the team.

Jerbeen can cover some of the same broad scout or mobile-character territory as Raptor, but the concept is different: the Raptor listing emphasizes hunting and senses, while Jerbeen’s emphasizes leaps, nimbleness, and team tactics. Choose based on which scenes and relationships you want to foreground.

Mapach: the improvisor and problem-solver

Mapach are raccoon-like humblefolk with listed +2 Wisdom and +1 Constitution emphasis. Their package includes Darkvision, Expert Climbers, Resilience, Scroungecraft, and Skulker. Start here for a resourceful explorer, survivalist, crafter, or character who solves problems with whatever is available.

Mapach may be especially appealing if you want exploration traits and practical ingenuity to be visible in play. Compare them with Cervan for a more endurance-centered concept, or Corvum if your idea of problem-solving is based more on study and analysis than making use of available materials.

Vulpin: the clever negotiator

Vulpin are fox-like humblefolk with listed +2 Intelligence and +1 Charisma emphasis. Their traits include Darkvision, Bite, Evasive, and Bewitching Guile. They are a natural starting point for a cunning negotiator, infiltrator, illusion-minded character, or social manipulator whose intelligence and presence both matter to the concept.

Vulpin are worth comparing with Corvum if you want a clever character. Corvum’s listing highlights Learned and Appraising Eye; Vulpin combine Intelligence emphasis with Charisma emphasis and guile. Decide whether the character’s cleverness is mainly investigative or social.

Which species should I choose for a rogue, ranger, wizard, or fighter?

Start with what you want that class to feel like at the table, then use species traits as support rather than as a class assignment. The available information suggests useful starting points, but it does not establish a single best species for any class or provide a class-by-class ranking.

  • Rogue: Corvum fits an observant investigator or clever planner; Vulpin fits a social schemer or infiltrator; Mapach fits a resourceful explorer. Pick the concept first, then confirm the class and species rules together with your Dungeon Master.
  • Ranger: Raptor is the most direct hunting and scouting concept in the core list, with Dexterity emphasis, Keen Senses, Woodland Hunter, and Hunter’s Training. Jerbeen offers a different mobile direction through leaping and nimbleness.
  • Wizard: Corvum can support a scholarly or analytical identity; Hedge can support a forest-magic or bug-speaking concept; Luma can suggest an unusual or fate-marked magical character. These are thematic fits, not class restrictions.
  • Fighter: Strig is a starting point for a strong, imposing guardian; Gallus can suit a practical community defender; Cervan offers an endurance-centered concept. Which one fits depends on whether you picture strength, service, or persistence as the character’s defining quality.

The listed ability emphases can be useful tie-breakers, particularly for a character using the original 2014-style presentation. They should not override the campaign’s approved character-building rules or the story you want to tell.

What should I compare when two species both fit?

Use four questions to separate close choices: which one best supports the story, which listed ability emphasis suits your intended character, which traits matter in exploration, and how each contributes to the party. A short comparison is more useful than trying to declare one species objectively superior.

  1. Story fit: Which species makes the character’s look, background, relationships, and place in Everden easiest for you to imagine? If one option immediately suggests people they care about or a reason they travel, that is meaningful evidence for your choice.
  2. Ability emphasis: Which listed ability emphasis supports the class or play style you expect? Treat it as a tie-breaker, especially when using 2014-style character options, and verify how the campaign handles ability scores.
  3. Exploration and mobility: Identify traits that will matter outside a fight. Glide, Darkvision, Expert Climbers, Natural Burrowers, Standing Leap, and Keen Senses each suggest different opportunities for movement, perception, or exploration.
  4. Party contribution: Look beyond damage. Communal, Take Heart, Team Tactics, Practical, Resilience, Forest Magic, and social traits may help define how your character supports a cooperative group.

If both finalists still look good, make the decision based on which one you would enjoy describing in an ordinary scene: a conversation, a journey, a search, or a moment when another character needs help. Species is part of the character’s identity throughout the campaign, not only a modifier for a combat turn.

Are Humblewood species compatible with 2024 D&D?

Hit Point Press says the core Humblewood setting was designed for the 2014 rules and is compatible with the 2024 rules; the publisher also provides a 2024 player-character update for options from the Campaign Setting. The publisher says the core setting and Humblewood Tales were designed for 2014 rules and are backward compatible.

For character creation, compatibility is not a substitute for agreeing on the exact rules. Ask your Dungeon Master which version to use, whether the 2024 update is expected, and which sourcebooks are allowed. This is particularly important if an online species listing and an older book or guide present character options differently. Use the current D&D Beyond trait listing as a reference for the summaries here, then follow the source and rules restrictions for your table.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the original ten-species list cover all of Humblewood?

No. The ten options in this guide are the core species from the original Campaign Setting. The current Humblewood line also includes the six Wesfolk species Capran, Eluran, Mustel, Seeta, Sylph, and Tilia, while Humblewood Tales expands the setting with additional material.

The original Campaign Setting product page describes a hardcover of more than 200 pages, ten new playable species, and a complete adventure from levels 1 to 5. Its product listing also describes a bestiary and the setting. The current D&D Beyond marketplace listing for the Campaign Setting includes ten playable species, four subclasses, three backgrounds, seven feats, and ten spells; its marketplace description also lists more than 50 monsters and 11 playable maps. These are product contents, not requirements for selecting a species. The original core list is enough to make the ten-way comparison in this guide; additional books are relevant only if the Dungeon Master allows them.

How we picked the starting points

The suggested matches follow the species descriptions, listed ability emphases, and named traits in the current species index. They are starting points for character concepts, not a power ranking, universal class recommendation, or claim about which species performs best. No published win-rate study or comparative ranking establishes a universally strongest Humblewood species.

Frequently Asked Questions

What races are in Humblewood?

The original Campaign Setting uses the term species for its five birdfolk and five humblefolk options. The broader current line adds six Wesfolk choices, so a campaign’s approved sourcebooks determine which options are actually available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I change my Humblewood character’s species later?

That depends on the campaign’s character-creation and rebuilding rules; the species summaries alone do not establish a respec rule. Ask the Dungeon Master before building around a choice you may want to change, and discuss whether a narrative change would be possible if the character concept evolves.

Do I need Humblewood Tales to play one of the original species?

No. The original Campaign Setting contains the ten core species covered here. Humblewood Tales expands the setting, but it is not needed to compare those original options.

Is Humblewood official D&D?

Hit Point Press identifies Humblewood as an unofficial D&D campaign setting created with the Open Gaming License. It is a third-party setting rather than a core D&D setting, so a Dungeon Master decides whether to include it in a campaign.
