When Chrome JavaScript is not working, pages keep refreshing, or a tab stays blank or stuck loading, first determine whether JavaScript is blocked or the failure is broader. Check Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > JavaScript, then open the same URL in an Incognito window. If Incognito works, an extension or damaged site data in your normal profile is the leading practical suspect. If several unrelated sites fail, investigate your connection, firewall, antivirus, VPN, proxy, available memory, and graphics rendering before resetting Chrome. This guide covers the common questions: “Why is JavaScript not working in Chrome?”, “Why does Chrome keep refreshing?”, “Why is the page stuck loading?”, and “Why do pages work in Incognito but not normal Chrome?”

What should I check first when Chrome will not run JavaScript or load a page?

Start by measuring the scope of the failure. A single broken website can have a server-side or script problem, while failures on several unrelated websites point more strongly to Chrome, the network, security software, or the device itself.

Test one site versus many

Write down the exact URL, any error code or message, your operating system and device, and whether the same address works in another browser. Try a second, unrelated website in Chrome. If only one address fails, do not immediately change global browser settings; the website itself may be down or sending code Chrome cannot complete. If many sites fail, continue with connection and device checks rather than treating every page as a JavaScript-permission problem.

Separate a script failure from a loading failure

A page that appears but has missing menus, forms, video controls, or login functions may be running with JavaScript disabled or blocked. A white page with a spinner, repeated reloads, or a tab that never finishes can instead involve stored site data, an extension, network access, security filtering, low memory, or graphics rendering. The same URL succeeding in another browser is useful evidence that the problem is local to Chrome or its profile; failure everywhere makes the site or network more likely.

How do I turn JavaScript on in desktop Chrome?

On desktop Chrome, enable the global JavaScript permission before troubleshooting more disruptive settings. Google describes JavaScript as required for many website features to work.

  1. Open Chrome and select the three-dot More menu.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Open Privacy and security, then Site Settings.
  4. Select JavaScript.
  5. Choose Sites can use JavaScript.
  6. Return to the affected tab and reload it.

If you intentionally keep JavaScript blocked globally, Chrome also supports site-specific permissions. Use an exception only for a site you trust and remove it if the page no longer needs it. A permission change is reversible and does not delete cookies, cache, extensions, bookmarks, or passwords.

What if the JavaScript control is missing or keeps reverting?

A work, school, or otherwise managed device can enforce browser policy. Chrome’s policy guidance warns that selecting “Do not allow any site to run JavaScript” can make some sites stop working properly. If the setting is locked, unavailable, or returns to its previous value after you change it, a local troubleshooting step cannot override the organization’s policy. Ask the administrator or the owner of the managed website to review the rule.

Why does the page work in Incognito but not in my normal Chrome window?

Incognito is an isolation test, not merely another refresh. Open the three-dot menu, choose New Incognito window, and enter the same URL. If the page works there, Chrome’s normal profile is the leading suspect—usually an extension or stored cookies and cached files.

Close the Incognito window after the test, then work through the profile causes in that order. Do not jump to a reset while an extension or one site’s data can be removed without affecting the rest of your profile.

How do I find the extension that is breaking a page?

Disable extensions, reload the affected page, and then turn extensions back on one at a time. This preserves a clear cause-and-effect test and avoids deleting every extension before you know which one interferes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open More > Extensions > Manage extensions.
  2. Turn off every extension, then reload the problem page.
  3. If the page now works, re-enable one extension and reload again.
  4. Repeat until the failure returns; the last extension enabled is the primary suspect.
  5. Use that extension’s controls to repair or remove it, or limit its site access to the current site or selected sites.

An extension can affect scripts, redirects, requests, or page elements even when Chrome’s JavaScript permission is correct. If disabling all extensions changes nothing, leave them off only long enough to complete the test and move to site-data and network checks.

How do I clear cookies and cache for a page that keeps refreshing or loading?

Damaged or stale cookies and cached files can prevent a site from completing its load. Delete data for the affected site first when possible; this limits the side effects compared with clearing all browsing data.

  1. Open Chrome’s Settings and use the privacy controls to reach Delete browsing data, or open the stored-data controls for the affected site from the address bar.
  2. Remove the site’s cookies and cached files. If you use the broader control, select the cookie and cached-file categories you intend to delete.
  3. Close the affected tab, open the URL again, and sign in if the site requests it.

Deleting site data can sign you out of that website and discard preferences stored there, but it does not remove your bookmarks or saved passwords. If the page loads after this step, the old site data—not the JavaScript engine itself—was blocking the request or script.

What should I do when many websites fail in Chrome?

When unrelated sites fail, verify the connection and security path before changing Chrome permissions. Chrome identifies network problems, security software, and website downtime as common causes of loading errors.

Check the network path

  • Confirm that Wi-Fi or Ethernet is connected and that another device can reach the internet.
  • Restart the modem or router, then retry the same URLs.
  • Test one of the failing addresses in another browser. If it fails there too, the network or website is more likely than Chrome.

Check security and routing controls

Temporarily review firewall and antivirus web-protection settings, VPN connections, and proxy settings. These controls can block scripts, certificates, redirects, or entire domains. Change only one control at a time, retest, and restore protection after the test. If the device is managed, security settings may also require an administrator.

Consider a site outage

If one URL fails in every browser while other sites work, the site owner may be experiencing downtime or a broken deployment. Save the exact error and the time of the failure so the owner can compare it with server logs.

Can low memory or graphics acceleration make a tab hang?

Yes. Chrome links low available memory to page crashes and loading errors. Close unused tabs, applications, downloads, and unnecessary extensions, then retry the page. This is especially important when only heavy pages crash or when the entire browser becomes sluggish.

A persistent white page with a spinner is a “hanging tab.” Chrome Enterprise describes that symptom as usually indicating a graphics-rendering issue. To test that possibility, temporarily turn off Use hardware acceleration when available in Chrome’s settings, restart Chrome, and load the page again. If the behavior changes, keep the setting off only while you investigate graphics drivers or other rendering conflicts; it is a diagnostic change, not a universal performance recommendation.

How do I update Chrome before resetting it?

Update and relaunch Chrome before using the reset control. An outdated browser can contain fixes that are absent from the installed build, and updating is less disruptive than rebuilding your profile.

  1. Open the three-dot More menu.
  2. Choose Help > About Google Chrome.
  3. Allow Chrome to check for an update. If one is available, select the relaunch option.
  4. Reopen the affected URL and repeat the JavaScript, Incognito, and extension tests if necessary.

Do not treat a successful relaunch as proof that the underlying cause is gone if the same page fails again. Continue with the scope-based checks above.

What does resetting Chrome change, and when is it justified?

Reset Chrome only after permissions, Incognito, extensions, site data, network controls, memory, rendering, and updates have been checked. Google’s reset procedure restores changed content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes to their defaults. Saved bookmarks and passwords are not deleted.

Reset is useful for a profile-wide configuration problem that targeted changes cannot isolate, but it has a wider data impact than deleting one site’s cookies or disabling one extension. Afterward, you may need to configure legitimate site permissions again and reinstall or re-enable extensions you still need. Reinstall Chrome only after reset fails or the installation itself is damaged; reinstalling is a later escalation, not the first response to a single broken page.

When should I contact an administrator or the website owner?

Contact an administrator

Ask for help when JavaScript is locked by organization policy, when a firewall, proxy, VPN, or antivirus setting cannot be changed, or when the browser immediately reapplies a managed setting. Provide the exact URL, error message, device and operating system, and the result of the Incognito and another-browser tests so the administrator can distinguish policy from connectivity.

Contact the website owner

Escalate to the site owner when only that site remains broken after JavaScript is allowed, extensions are isolated, site data is cleared, and the same URL fails in another browser or for other users. Include the URL, the visible symptom—blank page, repeated refresh, or endless spinner—and any error code. Chrome’s loading guidance explicitly recognizes that a one-site failure may originate with the site.

What is the shortest reliable troubleshooting path?

For a single site, verify JavaScript, test Incognito, disable extensions, and clear that site’s cookies and cached files. For several sites, check the connection, restart the router, review firewall, antivirus, VPN, and proxy controls, then reduce memory pressure and test hardware acceleration. Update and relaunch Chrome before a reset, and involve an administrator whenever policy or security software is outside your control.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep JavaScript blocked globally and allow it only for one trusted site?

Yes. Chrome supports site-specific JavaScript permissions, so you can retain a global block and add an exception for a trusted address. Review and remove that exception when the site no longer needs script access.

Why does another browser help diagnose a Chrome problem?

It provides a control test using the same network and URL. If the page works elsewhere, Chrome’s profile, extensions, permissions, or rendering path becomes more likely; if it fails everywhere, investigate the site or network first.

Will clearing cookies and cached files fix a page that reloads forever?

It can when the page is receiving stale or damaged stored data. Start with the affected site so you limit sign-outs and preference loss, then reopen the URL and authenticate again if required.

What does a managed JavaScript setting look like?

The JavaScript option may be unavailable, display a lock, or revert after you change it. Those signs indicate an organization policy, so the administrator or site owner must change the rule rather than the local user.
