If Cities: Skylines crashes, stutters, or refuses to load a city on Switch 2, first protect your saves and work out whether the problem affects one city or the whole game. There is no confirmed universal fix or official population, frame-rate, or crash threshold for Switch 2. Players have reported smoother performance on the newer hardware, but reports are mixed; the original Switch release and the Switch 2-specific Cities: Skylines – Expanded Edition are separate software versions, not guaranteed repairs for one another.

What should I do first if Cities: Skylines crashes or a city will not load?

Start by avoiding actions that could remove or overwrite your remaining recovery options. A city that appears corrupted is not necessarily proven to be permanently lost, but the available evidence does not establish a reliable repair method for a failed Switch 2 save.

  1. Do not delete save data or overwrite the only usable save. Avoid deleting the game or its data as a first response, too: there is no established evidence that reinstalling repairs a damaged city.
  2. Write down what fails and when. Note whether the game crashes at launch, while opening the save list, during a particular city’s loading screen, just after the simulation starts, while zooming, or during saving. Record whether the simulation was paused and whether the issue began after a game or system update.
  3. Keep different saves distinct. If an older manual save or autosave is available, try loading it without replacing the affected file. If it opens, save to a new slot and leave the original saves untouched.
  4. Test a fresh city if you can do so without risking the affected save. If a new city loads, that helps distinguish a one-city problem from a broader game issue. It does not identify the cause or prove that the old city can be recovered.
  5. Record the edition and update state. Confirm whether the installed game is the original Switch release or Cities: Skylines – Expanded Edition for Switch 2, and note the console and game update state before drawing conclusions.

These are conservative triage steps, not a documented Nintendo repair procedure. If the problem continues, contact platform or game support with the details you recorded and explain which saves still work.

Why there is no single Switch 2 crash fix

A crash can occur at several different stages, and those stages do not establish the same cause. A failure before the menu, a failure while one city is loading, and a failure after the simulation resumes may look similar to a player but produce very different support evidence. The current Nintendo compatibility material reviewed for this issue lists some games with startup or progress problems, but it does not name Cities: Skylines in the returned content. That omission is not a guarantee that every build, city, or save is trouble-free, nor is it a title-specific diagnosis.

There is also no authoritative published figure for a Switch 2 population ceiling, average frame rate, crash frequency, memory threshold, or save-corruption rate. Consequently, a city becoming slow at a particular population is an observation about that city, not a universal limit that can be used to predict every player’s result. Treat the troubleshooting process as evidence gathering and risk reduction rather than as a guaranteed repair sequence.

How can I tell whether the problem is one city or the whole game?

Compare the affected city with a fresh city or an older save, keeping the original affected save untouched. The pattern can make a support report more useful, although it cannot prove whether the cause is a save problem, an update, the simulation state, or the platform.

What happens What the pattern suggests What to record or try
The game crashes before reaching the city list or fails with more than one city. The issue is broader than one known city, but that alone does not identify the cause. Note the launch or menu stage, edition, and update state. Mention whether any city can load.
One city fails to load, while a fresh city or another save opens. The failure appears specific to that city or save state; it does not establish permanent corruption. Keep the failing save intact. Try an older save in a separate slot and report which files load.
A city loads, then crashes when the simulation starts or during a particular action. The failure is tied to a later point in that city session, but the trigger and cause are not established. Record whether the simulation was paused, the action underway, and whether the same point fails on another attempt.
The game remains open but becomes less responsive as you play. This is a performance symptom, not by itself proof of a crash or a save defect. Note when the slowdown appears and whether it affects one city or more than one.
The game fails while saving or the latest save will not load afterward. A save failure is possible, but the available evidence cannot establish why it occurred or whether recovery is possible. Do not overwrite remaining saves. Identify any older usable manual or autosave and include that information in a support request.

A comparison is most informative when it is clear and specific: “the game crashes while loading this city, but a fresh city opens” is more useful than “Switch 2 crashes.” Avoid treating one successful test as proof that the console, game, or save is defect-free.

A practical symptom log

Before repeating a test, make a short log so that each attempt can be compared. Write down the edition name exactly as shown on the console, the console software state, and the game update state. Then record the save slot, the city involved, whether the simulation was paused, and the first visible failure: freeze, sudden return to the menu, application close, missing save, or a loading screen that never completes.

Use the same description for each attempt. “Slow” could mean delayed simulation ticks, jerky camera movement, a long load, or a complete lock-up. If zooming triggers the problem, say whether it happens in one district or everywhere. If saving triggers it, note whether the save was manual or automatic and whether another slot remains usable. This level of detail does not diagnose the game, but it prevents a support request from combining several different symptoms into one unsupported conclusion.

What can I do about lag on Switch 2?

There is no verified setting, population limit, or hardware change that guarantees smooth late-game performance for every Switch 2 city. Reports about performance on the newer hardware are anecdotal and mixed, so describe what happens in your own city rather than assuming a particular population or frame rate is the cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Note whether the issue is slow simulation response, choppy movement or zooming, a long load, or a complete freeze. These are different symptoms and help narrow down when the problem occurs.
  • Compare the affected city with a fresh city or an older save, without overwriting the affected file. A difference can help establish whether the symptom is city-specific, but it does not show why.
  • Record what was happening when the slowdown began, including whether the simulation was running or paused and whether it followed an update.
  • If the game crashes as well as slowing down, record each symptom separately and the order in which they occur.
  • Repeat a comparison under similar conditions. Testing a small fresh city against a developed city can show whether the symptom is tied to the save state, but it cannot establish a universal population threshold.

Some players say the original release feels much smoother or more stable on Switch 2 than on Switch 1. Another player report says the older release is not meaningfully enhanced and still shows poor level-of-detail behavior. Both observations can be true as personal experiences without producing a controlled benchmark. Do not assume that Switch 2 hardware eliminates late-game lag, and do not promise that an edition change will make a large city responsive.

Does the original Switch release run differently from Expanded Edition?

Yes, they should be treated as separate software editions when investigating controls, performance, features, and saves. The original Switch release and Cities: Skylines – Expanded Edition for Switch 2 are not interchangeable labels for a single build, and switching editions is not a confirmed way to repair a crash or recover a city.

Consideration Original Switch release Switch 2 Expanded Edition
Platform context The earlier Switch release; player reports describe its behavior when run on Switch 2 as well as on Switch hardware. A Switch 2-specific edition announced with an October 28, 2026 release date.
Performance evidence Some players report smoother or more stable play on Switch 2 than on Switch 1; another report says the older release is not meaningfully enhanced and retains poor level-of-detail behavior. No controlled, comparable performance result establishes how it handles the same city against the older edition.
Controls One player report says the older release has no mouse support. Do not assume its controls match the original release; a verified control comparison is not established here.
Existing saves Whether an individual save will load in another edition is not established. Do not assume every older save imports or that changing editions repairs a save.
Features and content Do not infer feature or DLC coverage from the other edition. Edition-specific contents should be confirmed for the relevant region and release; a complete comparison is not established here.

Player reports about the older release are not controlled benchmarks. They do not establish guaranteed frame rates, a population threshold, or how a particular large city will behave. If comparing editions, first confirm the exact edition and avoid treating an unverified save transfer as a troubleshooting step.

Should I buy the Switch 2 Expanded Edition?

Cities: Skylines – Expanded Edition can be considered as an optional Switch 2 edition, but it should not be presented as a technical repair product. There is no verified promise that buying it will eliminate crashes, restore a city, improve every late-game simulation, or import every save from the original release.

Before purchasing, confirm the current product listing for your region, the edition contents, whether a physical version is actually available, and the publisher’s current save-transfer information. The useful search phrase is “Cities: Skylines Expanded Edition Nintendo Switch 2,” but a retailer page is a product reference, not proof of compatibility or a remedy for an existing failure. Keep the original game and saves untouched until you know what the new edition supports.

Can I recover a corrupted-looking Cities: Skylines save?

There is no established, guaranteed save-recovery procedure for this Switch 2 problem. A city that will not load may be a save-specific failure, but available evidence does not prove that it is permanently lost—or that deleting, reinstalling, or switching editions will fix it.

  1. Leave the failing save alone. Do not replace the only copy that might still be usable.
  2. Look for another existing save. If an older manual save or autosave is available, load it without overwriting the failing file.
  3. If an older save loads, preserve it separately. Save to a new slot and retain the original files. This reduces the risk of losing the working fallback; it is not a guarantee that the latest city state can be recovered.
  4. Compare the result. Note whether the older save loads, whether a fresh city works, and the exact point where the affected city fails.
  5. Ask support before taking destructive action. Explain what failed, what remains usable, and which edition and update state are involved.

Cloud or console backup options may exist for a particular account and game, but the existence of a backup does not prove that it contains the latest working version of the city. Check the console’s current save-data and backup information before changing or deleting anything. Do not promise that a backup restores every failed save.

Do not apply instructions for the PC versions of Cities: Skylines or Cities: Skylines II to the Switch 2 game. PC discussions of mod managers, log files, save folders, or mod compatibility concern a different platform and evidence set; they are not established Switch save-repair instructions.

What information should I include when contacting support?

Send a concise account that lets support distinguish a one-city failure from a game-wide problem. Include observations rather than a guessed diagnosis.

  • Whether the same behavior occurs repeatedly or only once, without overwriting the affected file while testing.

For example: “The original Switch release on Switch 2 crashes while loading one city; a fresh city loads, an older save opens, and the problem started after the game update.” That report describes a pattern without asserting that the update caused it. If every city fails, say so explicitly; if only one city fails, identify that distinction.

Which fixes should I avoid?

Avoid procedures that are not supported for the console edition or could remove a remaining recovery option. In particular:

  • Do not delete save data, overwrite the sole usable save, or uninstall the game on the assumption that this will repair the city.
  • Do not treat Switch 2 hardware as a guarantee against crashes or late-game slowdown.
  • Do not assume Expanded Edition repairs or imports every original-release save.
  • Do not rely on a population limit, FPS number, crash rate, memory threshold, or save-recovery success rate; no authoritative figure for these has been established.
  • Do not apply PC mod, log-file, or save-folder instructions to the Switch 2 edition.
  • Do not treat a retailer purchase as a technical fix or use an unverified benchmark to promise better performance.

The most reliable next step is to preserve what still works, classify the failure, and share the exact pattern with support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a Switch cloud backup to restore a Cities: Skylines city?

Whether a particular city can be restored from a console backup depends on the backup options available for your account, game, and save. Check the console’s current save-data and backup information before changing or deleting anything; a backup’s existence does not prove that it contains the city’s latest working state.

Will my Cities: Skylines Switch save transfer to the Switch 2 Expanded Edition?

Save compatibility between the original Switch release and Expanded Edition is not established here. Check the edition’s current product or support information for your region before relying on a transfer, and keep the original save untouched until you confirm what loads.

Is Cities: Skylines on Switch 2 officially listed as incompatible?

The Nintendo compatibility document reviewed for this topic lists titles with startup or progress issues, but Cities: Skylines was not named in the returned content. That absence does not certify every game build or save as problem-free, and it is not a title-specific crash diagnosis.

Does Expanded Edition guarantee better frame rates or fewer crashes?

No verified comparison establishes a guaranteed frame rate or crash reduction for the Switch 2 Expanded Edition. Player reports about the older release running on Switch 2 vary, and they do not establish the behavior of every city or edition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my city lag even though Switch 2 is more powerful?

More powerful hardware does not create a documented guarantee for every city or simulation state. Reports are mixed: some players perceive much smoother play than on Switch 1, while another report describes little enhancement and poor level-of-detail behavior in the older release. Record the city, symptom, and point at which slowdown begins instead of assuming a universal population limit.

Should I reinstall Cities: Skylines after a crash?

Reinstallation is not an established repair for a damaged city or save. Preserve remaining saves and record the failure first; deleting the game or its data could remove a recovery option without addressing the cause.

Are PC mods or save-folder tools useful on Switch 2?

No. PC mod managers, log files, save folders, and Cities: Skylines II troubleshooting concern a different platform and edition history. They are not established instructions for the Switch 2 console release.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Treat Switch 2 Cities: Skylines problems as a triage case, not a guaranteed hardware fix. Preserve every usable save, test an older save and a fresh city without overwriting anything, identify the exact crash or lag point, and confirm which edition is installed. Switch 2 performance reports are mixed, no universal crash or population threshold is documented, and Expanded Edition is not proven to repair or import every older save. If the pattern persists, send the precise evidence to Nintendo or publisher support.
