The Civilization VII Gameplay Showcase introduced a campaign built around three Ages, with players choosing a leader separately from the civilization they guide in each chapter. It was a pre-release look at Firaxis’ design—not a launch announcement—and the game later became available worldwide on February 11, 2025.
What the Civilization VII Gameplay Showcase revealed
The official 2K showcase was billed as a development-team deep dive of more than 20 minutes, offering an overview of the game’s vision and new features. Its central ideas were the Age-based campaign and the ability to pick a leader independently of a civilization. 2K’s showcase page
How the three-Age campaign works
A campaign is divided into three playable chapters: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. The Ages are more than labels for successive historical periods: each has its own gameplay elements and civilizations. Some elements carry into the next chapter, with what continues shaped by the previous civilization and player performance. All players transition between Ages together. Civilization VII support: Ages
Antiquity
The opening chapter is the Antiquity Age. The showcase presents it as the first part of the larger campaign, rather than a standalone mode that must be completed before starting a separate game.

Exploration
At the next transition, the campaign enters the Exploration Age. The empire chooses a civilization available for that Age; it does not necessarily continue under the same civilization name and identity. Some parts of the player’s progress carry forward.
Modern
The final chapter is the Modern Age, where the Age-specific civilization and gameplay give the campaign its concluding stage. The shared transition timing means players move into each new Age together rather than advancing on separate schedules.

Why choose leaders and civilizations separately?
In earlier series conventions, a leader and civilization were closely paired. Civilization VII separates those choices: players select a historical leader and then choose the civilization that represents their empire in an Age. This creates room to combine a leader’s strengths with a civilization’s distinct capabilities. The distinction matters throughout a campaign because civilizations are associated with individual Ages, while the leader is a separate selection. The showcase’s main strategic shift is therefore not simply a new set of civilizations: it is the opportunity to build a campaign identity from these separate choices and the transitions between chapters.

What carries beyond a single campaign?
The support guide describes two progression tracks, Foundation and Leader. Rewards can include badges, banners, titles, borders, colors, and Mementos. Mementos are bonuses equipped to a leader during setup and last for that game; multiplayer setup can disable them. Civilization VII support: Ages
This progression layer sits outside the three-chapter structure: it gives players rewards that can be earned across play, while a Memento is a selected bonus for an individual game. The option for multiplayer setup to disable Mementos is relevant when players want a more even starting setup.
Console presentation and multiplayer details in the PS5 preview
A December 2024 PlayStation preview described console-specific presentation including a radial menu and DualSense haptic feedback for actions and combat. The same preview said multiplayer could span all three Ages or focus on a single Age, and reported cross-play at launch. Release and platforms
Take-Two announced that Civilization VII became available worldwide on February 11, 2025. Its launch announcement listed PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, and Mac and Linux through Steam. Take-Two said the game was distributed through physical retail and digital download. Platform availability and editions can vary, so confirm the current listing for the platform you intend to use.
