Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG from Sandfall Interactive, its developer’s debut game, published by Kepler Interactive. Its fantasy setting draws inspiration from Belle Époque France. The premise centers on the Paintress, who paints a number on a monolith each year; people of that age vanish. With 33 due to be painted next, an expedition sets out to destroy the Paintress and end the cycle. How does its combat work?
Combat combines turn-based decisions with real-time inputs. Players build a party from six characters and shape their abilities with gear, stats, skills, and synergies. During battles, they can dodge, parry, and counter attacks in real time, use rhythm-based timing to chain attacks, and aim at enemy weak points. The practical distinction is that battles are not purely menu-driven: planning a turn matters, but responding actively to enemy attacks and timing opportunities is also part of the system. How many copies has it sold?
Sandfall Interactive reported 8 million copies sold in its first-anniversary post on April 24, 2026. The figure is developer-reported; it should not be read as an independently audited total. Earlier, on October 8, 2025, the studio reported 5 million copies worldwide five months after launch and more than 333 million original-soundtrack track streams at that time. The stream figure is a dated milestone, not a current lifetime total.
