What is Clash of Clans?
Supercell describes Clash of Clans as a game in which players customize a village, build an army, and attack opponents. The basic loop is straightforward: develop your village, prepare troops, attack for progress and rewards, then use that progress to continue developing. Joining a clan adds a social and cooperative layer.
The game also has several parallel ways to play, including Home Village, Builder Base, Ranked play, Legend League, Clan Wars and Clan War Leagues, as well as Clan Capital-related activities. Their formats, eligibility rules and rewards can change; consult current in-game information or Supercell Support for the rules of a specific mode.
How does progression work?
Your Town Hall level is a major progression gate: it affects which features are available and when. A recommendation that works at one Town Hall may not apply at another, because players can have different troops, Heroes and equipment available. The following are dated examples, not a complete unlock chart:

These examples show why it is useful to check your current Town Hall and the feature’s in-game description before following a guide. Hero rosters, unlock requirements and other progression details are version-sensitive.
How do attacks and competitive modes work?
Attacks are the game’s route to testing an army against an opponent’s village. The troops and equipment available to you, your Town Hall, the target layout and the current balance all affect what makes sense to deploy. There is no evidence-backed “best army” that applies across every level and update, so treat a strategy recommendation as specific to its Town Hall, target and date.

Players can also pursue competitive ladders and clan-based competition, including Ranked play, Legend League, Clan Wars and Clan War Leagues. Supercell’s March 2026 design post discusses these modes alongside balance and progression, and says the design team monitors performance across different skill levels. It describes the goal as preserving multiple viable paths to success rather than making every strategy identical. A particular army’s results should not be treated as permanent when the balance landscape changes.
How do Heroes and Hero Equipment work?
Heroes and Hero Journey
Heroes are customizable combat units. The Hero Hall is where you manage them. Hero Journey, described by Supercell in June 2026 as available from Town Hall 7, tracks cumulative Hero levels and awards items that can include equipment, skins, Ore, resources, Magic Items and quests.
Equipment, the Blacksmith and Ore
Hero Equipment adds configurable abilities to Heroes. The Blacksmith is the place to equip and upgrade it; Supercell Support says it unlocks at Town Hall 8 and allows two pieces of equipment per Hero. Equipment upgrades use Ore. Supercell lists three Ore types—Shiny, Glowy and Starry—and acquisition routes that include Star Bonus, Hero Journey, Clan Wars and special events. Which route applies depends on the Ore type, so do not assume every type comes from every activity or that it arrives at a fixed rate.
How do clans fit into the game?
You can join an existing clan or create one. Clans connect players to cooperative and competitive activities, and official help covers topics such as clan roles, recruiting, perks, Clan Games and Clan War Leagues. For practical details—such as joining requirements, participation rules, cooldowns, roster sizes or rewards—check the current in-game prompts or Supercell Support rather than relying on an old guide.

The game is free to download; optional passes and in-game offers are separate from the basic app. Paid content is not a requirement to play. Supercell’s official materials describe Gold Pass changes and rotating Trader offers, and some items can speed up upgrades. Offer availability and purchase currency can depend on Town Hall level; check the in-game shop for current prices and contents.
Pass access and reward details have also changed by rollout. In an August 2026 update, Supercell said it was retiring the Starter Pass and testing Season Challenges at Town Hall 3 in stages, meaning not every eligible player would see the test immediately. The same update said Gold Pass became available from Town Hall 3 and that Season Pass and Gold Pass rewards scale to Town Hall level. These are update-specific details, not a guarantee that every account will see identical options at all times.

What should returning players know?
Content and balance continue to change, so a returning player may find that unlocks, rewards, strategies or pass features differ from what they remember. Check the current client for your own available features and Supercell’s dated release notes for changes that matter to your Town Hall or play style. Supercell’s August 2026 update, for example, mentioned new Town Hall 18 Diggy Pet levels and Supercharge levels for Builder’s Hut and Monolith—endgame additions rather than beginner requirements.
Supercell’s Clash of Clans Design Team described the game in March 2026 as having evolved “over 14 years.” That is the publisher’s statement as of that date, not a measure of how long any individual player has been playing.
How can you keep your account safe?
Supercell’s June 2026 update warns: “Supercell will never ask for your login code, password, or personal information.” Be cautious of offers promising free Gems or accounts, report suspicious activity, and contact Support through the game if you need help with account security.
