The best Epic cards in Clash Royale are the ones that fill a needed role in your deck, not simply the ones at the top of a tier list. For a flexible starting point, consider Barbarian Barrel, Poison, Tornado, Lightning, and the defensive options below. This is an editorial ranking for deck builders—not an official Supercell list—and the meta evidence reflects different dates and samples.
Clash Royale is a multiplayer game built around collecting and upgrading digital cards. This list weighs each Epic card’s role, flexibility across deck types, and available meta signals. Popularity is not the same as win rate, and a card’s value still depends on what your deck needs.
How to read this ranking
The July 2026 tier list from one guide publisher supplies a pool of candidates, while a RoyaleTools Top 200 Ranked usage snapshot offers a narrower, more recent popularity signal. Neither establishes a universal best order. Balance changes can also shift matchups: Supercell’s August 2026 notes describe Void as a 5-Elixir answer to tankier ranged cards, naming Bowler, Executioner, and Hunter. That context matters when choosing those defenders, but does not by itself prove they are weak.
Supercell’s Clash Royale Team says in its May 2026 balance notes: “Cards are scaled at Level 11 and, most of the time, base form changes also affect a card’s Evolution and Hero forms.” That is useful context when comparing card information across forms.

The 10 best Epic cards for deck builders
1. Barbarian Barrel — flexible ground control
Barbarian Barrel earns the top spot for its practical fit in decks that need a spell-like answer to ground units and a body left on the field. It appeared at 36.8% usage in RoyaleTools’ Top 200 Ranked sample, displayed as updated October 5, 2026. That is a popularity reading for that sample only—not a win rate or a measure of every player bracket.
2. Poison — sustained area denial
Poison is a strong pick when your deck benefits from controlling an area over time, particularly around enemy support troops or defensive positions. It registered 18.4% usage in the same RoyaleTools Top 200 snapshot, updated October 5, 2026. The figure supports its presence among high-ranked players in that sample, but does not establish that it suits every deck.
3. Tornado — repositioning and control
Tornado’s value comes from changing where enemy troops stand, which can make it a useful control tool when the rest of your deck can capitalize on grouped units or tower targeting. The July 2026 tier list placed it in S tier. Treat that as the publisher’s assessment at that time, rather than a current official ranking.
Rank #2
- Sotsu, Sunrise
- 26 types in total
- 20 packs per box
- 1 Pack: 5 cards
4. Lightning — high-impact spell support
Lightning ranked S tier in the July 2026 guide. It is most compelling in decks that want a spell capable of pressuring high-value targets and supporting a push; its place is less compelling when your deck needs cheaper, more frequent control. The tier placement is a dated guide judgment, not proof of universal effectiveness.

5. Hunter — close-range defensive damage
Hunter was also in the July 2026 S tier. Consider it when your defense needs a unit suited to damaging approaching threats at close range. Supercell’s August 2026 balance notes identify Hunter among the tankier ranged cards Void was intended to answer, so evaluate that interaction in the balance context rather than reading the tier placement as a guarantee of safety.
6. Cannon Cart — defense that can turn into pressure
Cannon Cart’s S-tier placement in the July guide makes it a candidate for decks that want a defensive unit with the potential to keep contributing after the initial exchange. Its usefulness depends on whether your deck can support that transition; the tier list does not provide a universal matchup or performance guarantee.
Rank #3
- The Blue Starter Deck specializes in expanding and managing your hand through continuous card drawing.
- It enables powerful combos to inflict major damage by raising and lowering the number of cards in hand.
- This deck requires foresight and careful planning — victory goes to those who stay one step ahead.
- Each starter pack contains 60 cards.
- This product is for one player. Two players and two starter decks are required to play.
7. Bowler — ground-lane control
Bowler appeared in the July 2026 S tier and is a candidate when you want a defender focused on controlling ground pushes. Supercell’s August notes name Bowler as a target for Void, described there as a 5-Elixir answer to tankier ranged cards. That makes the matchup worth considering when building around Bowler; it does not establish that Bowler is a poor choice in every deck.
8. P.E.K.K.A — a focused tank-killer option
P.E.K.K.A was placed in A tier by the July 2026 guide. Its role is more specialized than a broadly useful spell: it suits decks that need a heavy single-target defensive threat and can manage the tempo and support demands that come with that choice. Use it when that role fits your plan, rather than upgrading it solely for its tier placement.

Baby Dragon was also in the guide’s A tier. It can serve as supporting air presence and area damage, making it a more flexible candidate than cards built around a narrower defensive assignment. The July listing is a snapshot of one publisher’s view, so judge it against your deck’s actual support needs.

10. Dark Prince — ground support and pressure
Dark Prince rounded out the A-tier options in the July 2026 guide. Consider it when you need a ground-support card that can contribute to pressure as well as defense. It is a deck-fit choice, not a universal upgrade priority.

Several candidates narrowly miss this ten-card editorial order but appeared in the same July 2026 tier list: Giant Skeleton, Freeze, Rage, and Electro Giant were all placed in A tier. Their inclusion is a useful reminder that the best choice depends on the archetype and role a player is building around. The list does not establish that they rank below the ten picks in every matchup or current meta.
Which Epic card should you upgrade?
Prioritize the card that improves a deck you actually play. A high usage figure or tier placement is a reason to investigate a card, not a substitute for checking how it fits your collection and strategy.

- Need a spell or control tool? Consider Barbarian Barrel, Poison, Tornado, or Lightning according to the job your deck lacks.
- Need a defender? Hunter, Cannon Cart, Bowler, and P.E.K.K.A offer different defensive roles; choose for the threats your deck struggles against.
- Need support or pressure? Baby Dragon and Dark Prince are candidates when their contributions complement your existing plan.
- Comparing forms? Supercell says base-form changes usually also affect Evolution and Hero forms, but check the card and balance context relevant to the version you use.
