Clayface is worth seeing if you want an R-rated DC film built around practical gore, grotesque transformations and a committed lead performance. It is often freakishly entertaining and occasionally inventive, but it is less successful as a tragedy: the revenge plot is predictable, the supporting characters are thin, and its ideas about beauty and body dysmorphia remain largely on the surface. Tom Rhys Harries gives the film a compelling center, yet his work cannot entirely overcome an uneven script or inconsistent visual effects.
Is Clayface worth watching?
Yes, with reservations. James Watkins’ 108-minute film, scheduled to open in theaters on October 23, 2026, is the DCU’s first outright horror movie. Its strongest moments treat Matt Hagen’s transformation as both a physical nightmare and a tactical advantage, producing set pieces unlike conventional superhero action. Its weaker material reduces Hagen’s psychological collapse to a familiar revenge trail.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →GamesRadar+ senior entertainment writer Bradley Russell describes the result as a “gleeful superhero horror ride” whose spectacle is more developed than its tragedy. That distinction is the key to the film: viewers seeking inventive gore and a malleable DC tone are better served than those expecting a deeply layered character study.
How scary and gory is the movie?
Clayface is more committed to body horror and visceral gore than to sustained dread. Watkins uses a tight, suffocating camera style and practical effects to make Hagen’s changing body feel wet, unstable and physically dangerous.

The treatment sequence
The most vivid scare follows a failed treatment during plane turbulence, when travel scissors become part of a chaotic, intimate medical nightmare. The sequence works because the danger is immediate and tactile rather than dependent on a loud jump scare.
The Vesuvius nightclub sequence
At the Vesuvius nightclub, a mutated Hagen moves through a crowd without being recognized. The scene turns shapeshifting into social stealth, with the review comparing its cat-and-mouse design to Hitman or Trap. It is one of the film’s most inventive action ideas: Hagen’s ability to alter his appearance creates suspense before it creates spectacle.

Does Tom Rhys Harries carry the film?
He comes close. Harries plays Matt Hagen as a rising Hollywood actor whose identity is tied to his face, status and ability to perform normality. After crime boss Markos Szabo has his face slashed for sleeping with Szabo’s girlfriend, Hagen turns to outcast scientist Dr. Caitlyn Corr for experimental nanocell surgery. The treatment restores his appearance while damaging his grip on reality.
The performance’s strength is its instability. Hagen can appear vulnerable, vain, frightened or predatory without the film needing to announce each change. Russell calls Harries’ work the movie’s “starmaking element,” and that is the clearest reason to watch even when the script takes an obvious turn.
Where the character arc falls short
The screenplay repeatedly sets up an internal conflict about identity, then pushes it aside for revenge. Hagen’s choices become plot mechanics instead of a sustained examination of what it means to lose control of one’s face and self. Harries supplies emotional detail that the writing does not always preserve.

What does Clayface say about beauty and body image?
The premise naturally invites a horror story about Hollywood beauty standards, plastic surgery and body dysmorphia. The film gestures toward all three, especially through Hagen’s dependence on appearance and Corr’s experimental intervention, but it does not develop those ideas with enough depth.
The romance between Hagen and Corr is similarly underwritten. Rather than becoming a complicated relationship shaped by medical responsibility, attraction and changing identity, it often functions as bloody set dressing for the next shock. The result is a film that recognizes its richest themes without fully dissecting them.
How well do the supporting cast and villains work?
Naomi Ackie gives Corr a useful combination of scientific confidence and isolation, while David Dencik’s Markos Szabo embodies the criminal pressure that drives Hagen toward revenge. Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan, Nancy Carroll and Joshua James round out the principal cast. However, the side characters rarely receive enough development to make the central tragedy feel socially or emotionally complete.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That thinness matters because Hagen’s transformation should affect more than his own body. The people around him are mostly functional witnesses, threats or victims, so the consequences of his collapse feel narrower than the premise promises.
Does Gotham feel like a convincing DC setting?
Not consistently. The film aims for a grimy Gotham, but the review finds it tawdry and “Joker-lite” rather than diseased, decaying and distinctive. Uneven CGI further weakens some of the world-building, especially when digital imagery replaces the tactile effects that make the best horror scenes work.
Even so, Clayface gives the DCU a noticeably different texture. Its R-rated horror emphasis and focus on malleable identity separate it from standard superhero fare. Russell calls the movie “a real shock to the system” from a DCU whose strength is its malleability. The experiment is valuable, even when the execution is inconsistent.

How does the film balance spectacle and tragedy?
The balance tilts toward spectacle. Harries’ performance, the practical gore and the nightclub sequence create a distinctive superhero-horror experience, while the screenplay settles for a safer revenge structure. The film is therefore easier to recommend as a freakishly entertaining genre ride than as a fully developed tragedy.
| Element | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Lead performance | Outstanding; Harries gives Hagen volatility and emotional credibility. |
| Body-horror set pieces | Inventive and tactile, with the treatment disaster and Vesuvius sequence standing out. |
| Beauty and body-dysmorphia themes | Promising but surface-level. |
| Gotham and DCU world-building | A distinct horror direction, weakened by a tawdry setting and uneven CGI. |
| Story and supporting characters | Predictable revenge plotting and underdeveloped relationships. |
Who should see Clayface?
- See it in theaters if practical gore, transformation horror and unconventional DC projects are your priority.
- Keep expectations measured if you want a psychologically intricate tragedy or a richly developed Gotham ensemble.
- Watch for Harries if you are interested in a performance that makes an uneven character arc feel substantially more convincing.
