Clipboard Magic is a free Windows utility from CyberMatrix that keeps a reusable list of copied plain-text snippets. “Supports Windows 10” describes the program’s stated compatibility, not Microsoft’s support policy for the operating system. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so a Windows 10 installation may run Clipboard Magic while the operating system itself no longer receives Microsoft security updates.

How do I download and install Clipboard Magic for Windows 10 or 11?
Use CyberMatrix’s official download page and install the listed Windows build. The small installer means the download itself should not be a significant storage or bandwidth burden.
- Open CyberMatrix’s Clipboard Magic download page and verify that the listed version is 5.05.

Clipboard Magic monitors clipboard updates. When you copy plain text, the program adds it to the current list unless duplicate suppression prevents an identical entry. Selecting a row places that row’s text on the Windows clipboard, ready for the normal Paste command.

Does Clipboard Magic save clipboard history after a restart?
Yes, provided the clip list is saved. Clipboard Magic supports autosave when the program closes and a periodic autosave every five minutes. It also supports a configurable clip-folder location, so you can keep lists in a deliberate folder rather than relying on an unknown default.
Settings that affect persistence
- Autosave on close: writes the current list when Clipboard Magic exits normally.
- Five-minute autosave: reduces the amount of work lost if the program or computer stops unexpectedly.
- Clip-folder location: lets you choose where list files are stored, which is useful for backups or a controlled user profile.
- Startup and start minimized: loads the utility when Windows starts and keeps it out of the way until needed.
- Duplicate suppression: prevents repeated identical updates from filling the list when enabled.
Autosave is not the same as a backup. A damaged list, accidental deletion or disk failure can still remove data, so copy important list files to separate storage.

What does Clipboard Magic not save?
Clipboard Magic is a plain-text archive, not a general-purpose clipboard recorder. Rich-text and HTML formatting are discarded, and bitmap images such as screenshots are not archived. Text copied from a formatted web page may therefore reappear as unformatted characters when you paste it later.
It also should not be used as a password vault. The vendor warns that information copied into Clipboard Magic has no security protection. Clip files can contain account names, addresses, internal notes or other sensitive material, and anyone who can access those files may be able to read them. Avoid copying passwords or other secrets into the workflow; use a dedicated password manager’s fill or secure-copy features instead.

How do I back up or move Clipboard Magic clips to another computer?
The supported migration method is to copy the complete Clipboard Magic clip folder to the clip-folder location on the destination computer. This carries the saved list files rather than relying on the live Windows clipboard.
- Open Clipboard Magic’s settings or manual entry that shows the current clip-folder location.
- Close Clipboard Magic so autosave has finished and no list is being written.
- Copy the entire clip-folder, including all list files, to a separate location. A USB flash drive is a practical temporary transfer medium.
- Install Clipboard Magic on the other Windows computer.
- Close the new installation if it is running, then copy the saved folder contents into the destination computer’s configured clip-folder.
- Start Clipboard Magic and use its load or restore functions to verify that the expected lists and ordering are present.
Keep the original folder until you have opened the transferred lists and checked several clips. If the destination uses a different folder path, set that path in Clipboard Magic before copying or use the program’s save and load commands to select the files explicitly.

Windows’ built-in clipboard history is quicker to enable and includes cloud-assisted synchronization, while Clipboard Magic is more useful when you need editable, file-based plain-text lists and specialized paste automation.

Why does Clipboard Magic show “Unable to Open Clipboard”?
The official FAQ attributes this message to another application locking the Windows clipboard. Close or pause software that is actively monitoring or transforming clipboard contents, then try the copy again.
Other common problems
- Repeated duplicate clips: another application may be sending multiple clipboard updates for one copy operation. Turn on Ignore Duplicates to reduce the noise.
- Hotkey error: another program already owns the selected shortcut. Assign a different key combination in Clipboard Magic.
- Archiving stops: the manual notes that monitoring can occasionally stop. Close and restart Clipboard Magic, then test with a new plain-text copy.
- Formatting disappears: this is expected for rich text, HTML and images; keep the original application or use a tool designed to preserve those formats.
- Transferred list is missing: confirm that the complete clip-folder was copied, Clipboard Magic is closed during the replacement, and the destination folder setting points to that location.
Is Clipboard Magic worth using on Windows in 2026?
Clipboard Magic is worthwhile if your work involves many reusable plain-text snippets and you value editable, portable lists more than cloud synchronization. Its small footprint, file operations and configurable paste hotkeys give it capabilities that Win+V does not provide.
It is a poor fit for screenshot-heavy work, rich formatting, HTML-preserving workflows or credential storage. On Windows 10, also account for Microsoft’s end-of-support date of October 14, 2025; keeping the operating system protected is a separate responsibility from installing a compatible utility.
