If a cloned hard drive or SSD shows the old drive’s capacity, the new disk is usually healthy: the cloning program copied the source partition boundaries and left the rest of the larger disk as unallocated space. Open Windows Disk Management to confirm the layout. If the unallocated space is directly after the volume you want to enlarge, use Extend Volume (or PowerShell) to claim it. If a recovery partition is in the way, you must change the partition layout or use a partition-moving tool before the operating-system volume can grow. Clonezilla can also resize during a future clone by using its proportional partition-table and filesystem-resize options.
Why does a cloned SSD show the old drive’s size?
Most cloning jobs reproduce the source disk’s partition table, including each partition’s start and end sectors. When a smaller source is copied to a larger target, the cloned Windows partition can therefore remain the same size while the target’s extra capacity sits outside it as unallocated space. Clonezilla’s disk-to-disk documentation describes this default behavior as cloning the “same” size of data from source to target and leaving the remainder unused.

This is different from a defective or counterfeit SSD. The operating system may report the old capacity for C: even though Disk Management shows a larger physical disk. Capacity is also displayed differently by manufacturers and Windows: drive makers use decimal terabytes (1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes), while Windows reports binary tebibytes as a smaller-looking decimal number. That unit difference does not explain a cloned volume matching the source exactly; an unallocated region usually does.
How do I check whether the extra space is unallocated?
Use Disk Management before changing partitions. It shows the physical disks, partition boundaries, filesystem labels and unallocated regions in one map.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Identify the disks physically. Note the source disk’s model and capacity and the target disk’s model and capacity in BIOS/UEFI, Windows Settings or the cloning program. Clonezilla warns that selecting the wrong target overwrites that disk’s data, so disconnecting the old drive temporarily is the safest way to prevent a mis-click.
- Open Disk Management. Press
Win+R, typediskmgmt.msc, and press Enter. Alternatively, right-click Start and choose Disk Management. - Find the cloned disk. Match its model and size, not only “Disk 0” or “Disk 1”; disk numbers can change after a reboot or when drives are reconnected.
- Inspect the partition map. A black bar labeled Unallocated means no volume currently owns that space. Check whether it is immediately to the right of the Windows volume you want to enlarge.
- Check the filesystem. The standard Windows extension workflow supports NTFS and ReFS. A different filesystem may require a backup and a filesystem-specific migration or reformatting plan.
Do not delete a partition merely because it is small. EFI System, Microsoft Reserved (MSR), recovery and vendor utility partitions can be required for boot or recovery. Record their sizes and labels before making any change.
Can I extend the cloned Windows partition in Disk Management?
Yes, when the free space is on the same physical disk, directly adjacent to the volume, and the volume uses NTFS or ReFS. Disk Management cannot jump over another partition.

- Back up important files and, ideally, create a current system image. Resizing normally preserves data, but a power failure or an existing filesystem problem can make any partition operation risky.
- In Disk Management, right-click the volume (usually
C:) and select Extend Volume. - Read the wizard’s disk and size information. Leave the suggested maximum selected to consume all contiguous unallocated space, or enter a smaller amount if you want a separate data volume later.
- Click Next, then Finish. The partition boundary should move to the right without changing the drive letter.
- Reopen Disk Management and File Explorer. Confirm the volume’s capacity and free-space figures, then open several important files.
If Extend Volume is greyed out, the usual cause is not the SSD. The unallocated area is either on another disk, separated by a recovery or utility partition, or the volume uses a filesystem Windows cannot extend through this interface.
How can I resize the partition with PowerShell?
PowerShell is useful when you want a repeatable command or Disk Management does not expose the desired maximum clearly. Open Windows PowerShell (Admin) or Terminal (Admin), and verify every disk and partition number before running a resize command.
- List partitions and their sizes:
Get-Partition - Check the supported minimum and maximum for the target volume. Replace
Cwith the correct drive letter:Get-PartitionSupportedSize -DriveLetter C - Resize to the reported maximum:
$size = (Get-PartitionSupportedSize -DriveLetter C).SizeMax Resize-Partition -DriveLetter C -Size $size
The cmdlet will not create space that is blocked by another partition. If SizeMax is close to the current size despite visible free capacity elsewhere on the disk, inspect the partition order rather than forcing a larger value.

When should I use DiskPart instead?
DiskPart provides command-line control for a basic NTFS volume when contiguous unallocated space follows it. It is scriptable, but a wrong disk or partition selection can destroy data, so use it only after checking the layout in Disk Management.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open an elevated Command Prompt or Terminal and start DiskPart:
diskpart - List disks and select the cloned target by its size:
list disk select disk N - List volumes, then select the Windows volume by its letter and size:
list volume select volume V - Confirm that the selected volume is the intended NTFS volume and that unallocated space is immediately after it. Then extend:
extend - Exit and verify in Disk Management:
exit
Microsoft notes that DiskPart can be blocked by boot-volume, page-file, filesystem or partition-layout conditions. If it reports that the volume cannot be extended, stop and correct the layout instead of deleting partitions at random.
Why is Extend Volume greyed out after cloning?
The command is unavailable when Windows cannot use the free sectors as a contiguous continuation of that volume. The most common layouts are shown below.
| Layout in Disk Management | Why extension fails | Appropriate action |
|---|---|---|
C: followed immediately by unallocated space |
Usually no blocking partition; check filesystem and permissions | Extend Volume, PowerShell or DiskPart |
C:, then Recovery/Utility, then unallocated |
Free space is noncontiguous | Move the intervening partition with a trusted tool, or use a controlled delete-and-recreate workflow after backup |
| Unallocated space is on a different disk | Windows cannot extend a basic volume across another physical disk | Resize the correct disk or create a separate volume |
| Volume uses an unsupported filesystem | Windows’ built-in wizard does not provide the required resize operation | Use that filesystem’s tools, migrate the data, or reformat only after a verified backup |
Recovery partitions often appear after the Windows partition on a cloned disk. They may contain the Windows Recovery Environment or manufacturer diagnostics. Deleting one can remove repair options, so export or recreate recovery media and confirm that you can boot recovery tools before removing it.
How do I handle a recovery partition between C: and the unallocated space?
Windows cannot extend C: across a recovery or utility partition. You have two broad choices: move the intervening partition so the unallocated space becomes adjacent, or remove it in a documented repair workflow and recreate or re-enable recovery afterward.

Move the partition
A partition-management application can relocate the recovery partition toward the end of the disk, then expand C: into the newly adjacent space. Macrium’s restore documentation illustrates the general model: a restored partition can retain the source size, with free space after it, and its partition properties can be used to extend the boundary. Treat any third-party utility as optional; verify its current support for your Windows version, boot mode and filesystem, and make a full backup first.
Delete and recreate in a controlled workflow
Microsoft documents layouts in which a protected recovery partition is removed, the operating-system volume is extended, and recovery support is verified afterward. This is not a casual Disk Management deletion: record the partition identifier, suspend encryption if required by your organization’s procedure, ensure you have Windows installation or recovery media, and confirm that important files are backed up. After extending, check whether Windows Recovery Environment is enabled and rebuild or recreate the recovery partition according to Microsoft’s current instructions for your Windows release.
Can Clonezilla use the larger capacity during the clone itself?
Yes. A future Clonezilla disk-to-disk job can proportionally create the target partition table and resize the filesystem, avoiding a separate Windows resize step.
| Clonezilla option | Purpose | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
-k1 |
Create the target partition table proportionally when the destination is larger | Partition sizes change during cloning; review the proposed layout carefully |
-r |
Resize the filesystem automatically after the partition is enlarged | Filesystem support and available space still determine the final result |
| Default behavior | Clone the source-sized data and leave the remainder unused | Requires a post-clone extension if you want one large system volume |
In Clonezilla’s interactive interface, select the advanced option corresponding to proportional partition sizing when the target is larger, and enable automatic filesystem resizing. Read the summary screen twice: source and target must be the intended disks, and a target selection mistake overwrites the selected disk. Even with these options, verify the result in Windows after the first boot.
What should I choose: clone-time resizing or post-clone resizing?
Choose based on the partition layout and how much control you need rather than on the SSD’s brand or interface.

Does MBR or GPT affect the capacity I can use?
Yes. Microsoft states that a disk larger than 2 TB must use GPT to access capacity beyond 2 TB. MBR can still hold smaller cloned disks, but converting a boot disk changes the boot arrangement and should be planned rather than attempted as a quick capacity fix.
In Disk Management, right-click the disk label (for example, Disk 0), choose Properties, and open the Volumes tab to see the partition style. A modern UEFI Windows installation normally uses GPT; legacy BIOS installations may use MBR. If the target is over 2 TB and still uses MBR, resolve the partition-style and boot-mode issue before relying on the additional capacity.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do I verify the clone after resizing?
- Reopen
diskmgmt.mscand confirm that the intended partition boundary reaches the expected end of the target disk. - Open File Explorer, right-click the volume, choose Properties, and compare its capacity and free space with Disk Management.
- Restart with the cloned disk as the selected boot device. If both disks remain connected, use the firmware boot menu to select the target by model.
- Open representative documents, applications and project files; a successful boot alone does not prove every file copied correctly.
- Keep the original source untouched until the target has booted reliably and the files you need have been checked.
- If BitLocker or another encryption system is enabled, confirm its recovery key is available before changing partitions or boot configuration.
What preparation prevents a wrong-capacity clone?
Choose a target that is genuinely larger than the source’s used data and match the computer’s interface and physical form factor. For example, a 1 TB internal SSD is a practical replacement phrase when shopping for a larger target, but the drive must also match the machine’s SATA or NVMe interface, connector, thickness and mounting arrangement. Capacity alone does not guarantee compatibility.

Decide whether you want one enlarged system volume or separate data and recovery space. During the clone, read the source and destination model names rather than relying on capacity alone, and save any logs or screenshots of the final layout.
What if the new disk still reports the wrong physical capacity?
If Disk Management shows the target disk itself at the expected size but the volume is smaller, this article’s partition steps apply. If the physical disk is also smaller than its label, check the drive’s firmware, enclosure or adapter, connection mode and manufacturer specifications. Test the disk before trusting it with irreplaceable data; do not repeatedly reclone until the hardware identity and reported capacity agree.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will extending a cloned partition erase my files?
Extending an NTFS or ReFS volume into directly adjacent unallocated space is designed to preserve existing data, but every partition change carries risk. Keep a separate backup and do not proceed if Windows reports filesystem errors, an unexpected disk identity or an interrupted clone.
Can I combine unallocated space from two SSDs into C:?
Not with the normal Windows extension workflow for a basic boot volume. The free space must be on the same physical disk and directly after the partition; space on another SSD should remain a separate volume or be handled through a different storage design.
Why does File Explorer show less space than the SSD package?
Manufacturers advertise decimal capacity, while Windows displays a binary-based value and reserves some space for partitioning and filesystem metadata. Compare the physical disk size in Disk Management, then compare the volume size separately; only the latter is fixed by the cloned partition boundary.
Should I keep the old drive connected after cloning?
Keep it disconnected or offline until you have selected the new disk as the boot device and verified your files. Two drives with identical boot partitions can cause firmware or Windows to start from the wrong disk, making troubleshooting confusing.
Do I need to convert MBR to GPT to use a larger SSD?
Only when the disk is over 2 TB and you need capacity beyond the MBR limit, or when your planned UEFI boot configuration requires GPT. Check the current partition style first and plan any conversion with a backup and a boot-mode change; resizing alone does not convert MBR to GPT.
