Errors this guide fixes
You may see one of these messages:
- “The program can’t start because cmdhtml.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because cmdhtml.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting cmdhtml.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading cmdhtml.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “cmdhtml.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- “cmdhtml.dll wasn’t properly signed. Installation aborted.”
The cmdhtml.dll error usually points to a damaged, incomplete, quarantined, or mismatched Comodo Internet Security or Comodo Antivirus installation. It is normally an application-private component, not a Windows file.
The 60-second answer
Do not download cmdhtml.dll from a DLL website and do not copy it to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

The file is associated with Comodo software and appears to be an embedded HTML and user-interface component derived from the Sciter engine. It is not established as a Windows system DLL. Public metadata also shows different builds and publisher associations, so a file’s path, signature, version, and owning executable matter more than a generic DLL index.
What causes a cmdhtml.dll error
The likely cause depends on when the error started.
| Situation | Most likely explanation | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| The error appeared after installing Comodo | The installation did not complete | Reinstall from the official installer |
| It started after a Comodo update | Files from different builds may be mixed | Update or completely reinstall Comodo |
| Windows Security reports quarantine | The file was removed or blocked | Verify it before restoring it |
| The installer says it was not properly signed | Certificate, update, clock, or network validation problem | Update Windows and retry online |
Comodo crashes with cmdhtml.dll as the faulting module |
The DLL may be damaged, or another component may be causing the crash | Update Comodo and collect crash details |
| The named file exists but will not load | A dependency may be missing | Repair Comodo and inspect the application error |
| You never installed Comodo | The file may belong to an old or unrelated application | Identify the owning executable before changing anything |
A cmdhtml.dll crash does not prove that the DLL itself is the root cause. The caller, an injected security product, a damaged installation, or a missing dependency can also be responsible.

Fix 1: Confirm which application owns the file
Before replacing anything, establish whether Comodo is involved.
Check the file location
- Press Windows key + E.
- Select This PC.
- In the search box, enter:
text
cmdhtml.dll
- Wait for the search to finish.
- Right-click each result and select Open file location.
- Record the complete path.
A path inside a Comodo installation directory is consistent with the known use of this file. A copy in System32, SysWOW64, a temporary folder, or an unrelated program directory should not automatically be trusted.
Check the file properties
- Right-click
cmdhtml.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Note the file version and size.
- Open Digital Signatures, if that tab is present.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
A known public build is 64-bit version 3.3.0.6, approximately 4.77 MB, but do not assume every Comodo installation uses that exact build. Older and newer product generations may contain different files.
The publisher information may not be identical in every metadata source because the component appears to be related to an embedded Sciter HTML engine. Treat an absent or unexpected signature as a reason to reinstall from Comodo, not as a reason to download a replacement DLL.
Identify the process that fails
Read the error carefully. The affected process may be:
cis.exe, the Comodo Internet Security processcmdinstall.exe, the Comodo installer- Another Comodo executable
- An unrelated application that happens to use a same-named file
You can also check Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an Application Error event at the time of the crash.
- Check Faulting application name and Faulting module name.
If the faulting application is Comodo and the module is cmdhtml.dll, continue with the Comodo repair steps below.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall Comodo
This is the most likely solution for a missing or damaged cmdhtml.dll.

Try the normal uninstall first
- Press Windows key + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find Comodo Internet Security, Comodo Antivirus, or the installed Comodo product.
- Select the three-dot menu or the product entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
Next, download the current installer directly from Comodo’s official product or support pages. Avoid using an old installer stored on another computer or an installer obtained from a file-sharing site.
Right-click the installer, select Run as administrator, and complete the installation. Allow the installer network access when Windows Firewall or another security product asks for permission. Do not replace one DLL manually with a file from another Comodo version.
Use Comodo’s official uninstaller when normal removal fails
If the uninstall process freezes, leaves services behind, or the new installer detects an existing damaged installation, use Comodo’s official uninstaller.
- Obtain the uninstaller from Comodo’s official support documentation.
- Save your work and close running applications.
- Right-click the tool and select Run as administrator.
- Follow its product-detection and removal prompts.
- Restart Windows when instructed.
- Install Comodo again from a fresh official installer.
The uninstaller may remove more than the ordinary Windows Apps entry because it is intended to clean failed or incomplete Comodo installations. If support may need the logs, preserve them before running a complete cleanup.
How to tell whether this worked
Start Comodo from the Start menu. Then check that:
- The program opens without a
cmdhtml.dllmessage. - The Comodo installation directory contains the file supplied by the new installation.
- The product can update normally.
- Event Viewer no longer records the same startup failure.
If the installer again reports that cmdhtml.dll was not properly signed, continue to the next fix instead of copying a different DLL into the installation folder.

Fix 3: Resolve the “wasn’t properly signed” installer error
The message:
cmdhtml.dll wasn't properly signed. Installation aborted.
has been reported with Comodo installation, particularly with older offline installers and older Windows 7 systems. It can be related to certificate validation, missing Windows updates, an incorrect system clock, or the installer being unable to reach required online services.
Try these steps:
- Open Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Date & time.
- Turn on Set time automatically.
- Select Sync now.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Download a fresh installer from Comodo.
- Run it as administrator while connected to the internet.
On Windows 7, certificate and trust-chain problems are more likely with legacy installers. An old offline package may fail even when the file itself is genuine. Use the current installer supported by Comodo rather than repeatedly retrying an obsolete package.
If another security product is active, temporarily pause its installation blocking feature only after verifying the Comodo installer’s source and signature. Re-enable protection immediately after the installation. Do not create a permanent broad exclusion for the Comodo folder.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine safely
A security product may have quarantined cmdhtml.dll during installation or an update.
Windows Security
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Expand the detection associated with Comodo or
cmdhtml.dll. - Review the file path, detection name, and action.
- Do not select Restore solely because the filename is familiar.
Microsoft’s Protection History guidance explains how quarantined items are reviewed and restored. Restore the file only when the path belongs to your verified Comodo installation and the installer or signature can be trusted.

The safer repair is usually to remove and reinstall Comodo from its official package. If the file is detected again immediately, leave it quarantined and contact Comodo support or the security-product vendor. A repeated detection may indicate a false positive, corruption, or an untrusted installer.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Windows repair commands will not normally recreate a Comodo-owned DLL. They are useful when Windows itself is unstable, system files are damaged, or the installer fails for broader system-integrity reasons.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Press Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
Run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete. Microsoft documents this order in its System File Checker and DISM instructions.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchSuccess means DISM completes without an error and SFC reports that it repaired or verified protected Windows files. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the Comodo repair rather than expecting SFC to restore cmdhtml.dll.
If you are tired of repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problems it identifies; its free scan shows what it found, while repair is performed by the full version. Reinstalling Comodo remains the definitive fix when this application-owned DLL is missing.
Fix 6: Update Windows and device drivers
A driver is not normally the direct owner of cmdhtml.dll, but outdated graphics, display, storage, or security-filter drivers can contribute to application crashes and failed installers. Update them only after repairing Comodo.
Use Device Manager
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, or Storage controllers.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Install an offered update.
- Restart Windows.
For a recently updated driver, right-click the device, select Properties, open the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if the button is available and the problem began immediately after that update.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of identifying stale drivers; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling Comodo when Comodo owns the missing file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Check for a missing dependency
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that cmdhtml.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by that DLL.
First, confirm whether the file exists in the Comodo installation directory. If it does, do not copy another version over it. Repair or reinstall Comodo so its installer can restore the complete set of matching files and dependencies.
Do not install random runtime packages based only on a generic DLL error. If the official Comodo installer identifies a required Microsoft runtime, install that runtime from Microsoft, then restart and rerun the Comodo installer.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no evidence that the ordinary Comodo or embedded Sciter runtime copy of cmdhtml.dll needs registration.

Do not run:
regsvr32 cmdhtml.dll
A likely result is an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not repair a missing, corrupt, or mismatched application DLL. Microsoft explains the command’s intended use in its regsvr32 documentation.
Why downloading cmdhtml.dll is unsafe
Random DLL download sites can provide:
- The wrong Comodo generation
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A file with conflicting version metadata
- A file with no valid signature
- A modified or malicious payload
- A DLL that loads but crashes because its dependencies do not match
A 64-bit Windows installation uses System32 for 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 for 32-bit system files. Those directory names do not make cmdhtml.dll a Windows component. Keep the file inside the application directory selected by the official Comodo installer.

FAQ
Is cmdhtml.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence establishes it as a Windows-shipped system file. It is normally associated with Comodo Internet Security or Comodo Antivirus and should not be copied into a Windows system directory.
Is cmdhtml.dll a virus?
The filename alone cannot answer that. Verify the path, digital signature, file version, and owning process. A copy inside a verified Comodo installation is different from an identically named file in a temporary or unknown directory.
Does cmdhtml.dll perform HTML scanning?
It is best described as an embedded HTML or user-interface component. Do not assume the filename proves that it performs a specific security-scanning function.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Can I restore cmdhtml.dll from quarantine?
Only after verifying the file’s path and authenticity. In most cases, reinstalling Comodo from its official installer is safer than restoring an isolated file.
Should I run DISM or SFC?
Run them when Windows has broader integrity problems. They are secondary checks and are unlikely to recreate a Comodo-owned cmdhtml.dll.
What if the file exists but Comodo still crashes?
The named DLL may have a missing dependency, a version mismatch, or a compatibility problem. Update or fully reinstall Comodo, then inspect Event Viewer for the faulting application and surrounding errors.
