“The program can’t start because cnhw08s.dll is missing from your computer.” If cnhw08s.dll was not found, could not be loaded, or reports that it is not designed to run on Windows, repair the Canon scanner driver rather than downloading the DLL by itself.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches what you see:
- The error appears when opening scanning software: reinstall the complete Canon driver and scanning utility for the exact scanner or multifunction-printer model.
- The error began after a Windows update or upgrade: install pending updates, then verify that Canon supports the device on your Windows version.
- The scanner disappeared from Windows: check Device Manager, the WIA service, the USB or network connection, and the driver architecture.
- The file vanished after security software detected it: inspect Windows Security Protection history, but prefer reinstalling the driver from Canon.
- Several Windows programs are malfunctioning: repair Windows with DISM and SFC after installing updates.
- The error appears during Windows startup: remove obsolete Canon software or its startup entry instead of placing an untrusted DLL in a system folder.
- You no longer use the Canon device: uninstall the abandoned Canon scanner software and remove its old device entry.
What cnhw08s.dll is
cnhw08s.dll is associated with a Canon WIA Scanner Driver. WIA, or Windows Image Acquisition, is Microsoft’s framework for scanner and imaging devices. Applications communicate with the WIA service, which loads the vendor’s device driver and communicates with the scanner.
That makes this a hardware-driver problem, not normally a missing Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, or universal Windows DLL. The file is not expected to exist on every Windows computer.

The exact Canon model cannot be identified from the filename alone. Several Canon devices can install similarly named WIA components, and the correct replacement depends on the scanner or multifunction printer, Windows edition, and system architecture. Public file listings also disagree about exact versions, sizes, and locations, so do not use those values to select a replacement.
A Windows 7-era driver package has been associated with cnhw08s.dll, but that does not establish compatibility with Windows 10 or Windows 11. Check the device’s support information before installing an older package.
Fix 1: Identify the Canon device and reinstall its driver
This is the most likely fix when the error appears while scanning.
Find the hardware model
Check the label on the scanner or printer. If Windows still detects it:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a Canon entry, an unknown device, or a device with a yellow warning icon.
- Double-click the entry and open the Details tab.
- Select Hardware Ids from the Property list and note the values.
You can also check Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. Record the exact model, including any suffix or regional designation.
Download the correct package
Go to Canon’s official Support site and search for that exact model. Select the installed Windows version and the correct architecture, then download the complete scanner or multifunction-printer package.
Depending on the model, the scanner component may be named:

Do not choose a package for a similar-looking Canon model. If Canon does not list a Windows 10 or Windows 11 package, the older driver may not work correctly on the current system.

Reinstall cleanly
- Disconnect the scanner’s USB cable if the Canon installer says to do so.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove the affected Canon scanner, printer, ScanGear, or scanning utility software.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Canon installer you downloaded.
- Choose the normal or complete installation when offered.
- Connect the scanner only when the installer requests it.
- Restart again if prompted.
- Open the Canon scanning utility and perform a test scan.
If the installer refuses to run, right-click it, select Properties, open Compatibility, and use compatibility settings only when Canon’s instructions identify the package as legacy software. Do not force a random driver onto Windows simply because its filename appears to match.

Confirm that Windows is using the repaired driver
After installation:
- Open Device Manager.
- Right-click the Canon scanner and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for “This device is working properly.”
- Open Driver and review the provider, date, and version shown there.
- Open the Details tab and inspect Inf Name or Service if available.
- Test the scanner from both the Canon utility and Windows Scan, if installed.
The error is repaired when the scanner is detected and a preview or scan completes without the missing-DLL message.
Fix 2: Check the WIA service
A driver can be installed while the Windows service that loads it is stopped.

- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic or Automatic (Delayed Start) if that is the existing system policy.
- If the service is stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart the Canon scanning application.
If WIA will not start, note the exact error. A dependency failure or broader Windows corruption is more likely than a missing cnhw08s.dll alone. Reinstall the Canon driver after repairing the service.
Windows Features is not a normal place to install this file. Do not enable random legacy components or optional features as a substitute for the Canon WIA package.
Fix 3: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A 32-bit or 64-bit mismatch can produce “not designed to run on Windows” or entry-point errors.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings > System > About.
- Read System type under Device specifications.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
Download the package explicitly listed for that architecture. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit Windows folder, or a 64-bit DLL into a 32-bit application directory.

The location of a driver file may vary. It might be held in a Driver Store path or another driver-managed directory rather than simply appearing in C:WindowsSystem32. Do not treat a particular folder as proof that the file is correct.
Fix 4: Check Windows Security Protection history
If the error started suddenly after an antivirus scan, the file may have been quarantined.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for the Canon driver or scanner software.
- Expand a detection to inspect its name, path, and action.
Do not restore the file merely because its name matches the error. Restore it only if its origin is clearly an authentic Canon driver installation and its signature or provenance can be verified. In most cases, reinstalling the complete driver from Canon is safer than restoring one quarantined DLL.

If Windows Security repeatedly removes the file after a clean Canon installation, leave it quarantined and investigate the detection rather than adding a permanent exclusion without understanding it.

Use this repair when multiple Windows components are failing, WIA will not start, or the problem began after damaged servicing. It is less likely to help when only Canon scanning is broken and the rest of Windows works normally.
First install updates:
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Download and install available updates.
- Restart Windows, including when no restart is immediately requested.
Then run the supported repair sequence:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test WIA and the Canon utility again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses. SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command is a substitute for reinstalling a model-specific Canon driver.

Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows update, cleanup operation, or software removal.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point and select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally rolls back system files, settings, drivers, and installed programs without changing personal documents. Afterward, reinstall the correct Canon driver if necessary.

If cnhw08s.dll appears during startup even though you are not opening a scanner application, an old Canon utility may be trying to load a removed driver.
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Turn off obsolete Canon scanning utilities you no longer use.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall unused Canon scanner software.
- Restart Windows.
- If the device is still listed, remove it from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- In Device Manager, right-click the obsolete device and select Uninstall device.
- Select the option to remove driver software only when you are certain the device is no longer needed.
If you still use the scanner, do not remove its driver without immediately reinstalling the correct package.
Why copying the DLL or using regsvr32 is usually wrong
Downloading cnhw08s.dll from a random DLL website is risky. The file may contain malware, belong to another Canon model, target the wrong architecture, or omit the INF registration, catalog signature, dependencies, and registry configuration that the WIA driver needs. Windows may also load an untrusted copy from an application directory because of its DLL search behavior.

regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. WIA drivers can use different driver models, including DLLs that export driver functions rather than ordinary COM self-registration. Running regsvr32 against the file may produce an error or create an incorrect registration state. Use the Canon installer unless Canon’s documentation specifically instructs otherwise.
“The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by cnhw08s.dll is missing. Replacing only the named file would not repair that dependency.
If the error remains
Collect the details before making further changes:
- Write down the complete error message and the application named in it.
- Check whether the scanner appears in Device Manager.
- Test another USB port and cable, or verify the network scanner connection.
- Recheck the installed Canon model and Windows architecture.
- Review Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for an error at the same time.
- Look for an installation log in the Canon program folder.
- Test the scanner from a new Windows user profile.
- Contact Canon support with the exact model, Windows version, error text, and driver package used.
For Windows 7 systems, treat this as a legacy-driver and operating-system support problem. An old WIA package may not be suitable for a modern Windows installation, and upgrading Windows may be safer than trying to preserve an isolated legacy DLL.
