“cnb_0280.dll is missing from your computer,” “cnb_0280.dll was not found,” and “The specified module could not be found” are common forms of this error. The message “cnb_0280.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error” can also appear when a Canon component is damaged or incompatible.
The 60-second answer
cnb_0280.dll is associated with Canon Inkjet Printer Driver software, not with Windows itself or the Microsoft Visual C++ runtime. The exact Canon printer model that installed it cannot be identified from the filename alone.

The safest repair is to identify the Canon printer or utility on the computer, remove its damaged or outdated software, then download and install the matching driver package from Canon’s official support site. Do not download the DLL by itself and copy it into System32 or SysWOW64.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf printing still works and the message appears only when Windows starts, the problem may be a leftover Canon startup entry rather than an active printer failure.

What cnb_0280.dll is
Public file records associate cnb_0280.dll with Canon Inkjet Printer Driver software and attribute that software to CANON INC. That description comes from public DLL metadata rather than a Canon page that names the file directly, so it should be treated as an identification clue rather than a complete specification.
There is no verified evidence that this file is a standard Windows component. It is also not established as part of Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Windows does not normally provide this file through a Windows feature or through the operating system’s protected system files.
The exact printer model and installer package are not confirmed. Several Canon printer families and utilities can install related driver components, and the filename alone is not enough to choose a replacement package.
Some third-party records report a 32-bit build, a version such as 0.3.1536.1, and a size of approximately 94.5 KB. Those details are not independently confirmed by Canon and should not be used to select or download a replacement file.
What the error usually means
The wording helps narrow the problem:
- “Missing” or “was not found” usually means a Canon executable is looking for a file that was deleted, quarantined, or never installed correctly.
- “The specified module could not be found” can mean that
cnb_0280.dllis missing, but it can also mean that a dependency used by the DLL is missing. - “The procedure entry point could not be located” often indicates mismatched Canon files from different driver versions.
- “Not designed to run on Windows” or “contains an error” can indicate corruption, an incomplete update, a wrong architecture, or a damaged dependency.
Before changing anything, note the complete error text and the program named in the dialog. Also record whether the message appears when printing, when opening Canon software, or only during Windows startup.
Find which Canon component is calling the file
Check installed applications
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Canon.
- Record the names of Canon printer drivers, scanning utilities, status monitors, or setup programs.
- Do not remove software yet if you are unsure which printer is still in use.
If the computer has several Canon entries, check the printer currently listed under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners in Windows 10.
Check startup entries

- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Canon entries.
- Right-click a Canon entry and choose Open file location if available.
- Check whether the referenced executable is still installed in a Canon folder.
- Disable only the obsolete entry if the printer is no longer used.
Do not delete a startup item solely because its name contains Canon. Confirm its file path and publisher first.
Check Event Viewer
- Right-click Start and select Event Viewer.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Choose Find from the Actions pane.
- Search for
cnb_0280.dll. - Record the application name, faulting module, and event time.
Event Viewer may identify an old Canon monitor or utility even when the visible error dialog does not.
Fix 1: Reinstall the correct Canon driver
This is the primary fix for a missing or damaged cnb_0280.dll.

- Identify the exact printer model from the printer label, Windows printer list, or an existing Canon utility.
- Open Canon’s official Software and Drivers support page.
- Select the exact printer model.
- Select Windows 10 or Windows 11 and the correct system architecture when prompted.
- Download the current driver or complete software package offered for that model.
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps, uninstall the related Canon printer software.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Canon installer as an administrator.
- Follow the connection instructions for USB or network installation.
- Restart again if the installer requests it.
- Print a Windows test page.
To print a test page, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, select the printer, choose Printer properties, open the General tab, and select Print Test Page. Windows 10 uses the same process through Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
Do not choose a driver merely because its name contains PIXMA or because it is for a similar-looking model. Canon packages are model-specific, and the wrong package can leave the same missing-file error in place.
If you maintain several office computers, download the package for each exact model and Windows version, then document which installer was used. This is more reliable than copying a DLL from one machine to another.
Manually comparing printer-driver versions across several machines is tedious, particularly when old Canon utilities remain installed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its full-version repair and installation features are optional, and the exact Canon package remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 2: Repair or remove an incomplete Canon installation
Use this path when the error began after a printer reinstall, Canon update, Windows update, or interrupted setup.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the Canon printer software.
- Choose Uninstall or Advanced options if a repair option is provided.
- Restart Windows after removal.
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if the Canon installer specifically requires it.
- Install the current package from Canon for the exact model.
- Reconnect the printer only when the installer requests it.
If the old Canon software does not appear in Installed apps, open Control Panel:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Remove clearly identified Canon printer software.
- Restart and run the current Canon installer.
Do not remove unrelated Microsoft printer components or delete random files from C:Windows. If Windows still lists an old printer, remove it through Settings > Printers & scanners after uninstalling the Canon package.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may have removed the file, especially after a driver update or an incomplete installation.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Expand any detection associated with a Canon installation.
- Check the detected file path, threat name, and action taken.
Do not restore the file just because its name matches the error. Restore or allow it only when:

- The file is inside the expected Canon installation folder.
- The Canon installer was obtained from Canon’s official support site.
- The file’s digital signature identifies a trustworthy publisher.
- A full Microsoft Defender scan does not report a broader infection.
If the alert identifies malware, leave the file quarantined, choose Remove, and run Scan options > Full scan. Use Microsoft Defender Offline scan if you suspect the system has been compromised.
After handling quarantine, reinstall the complete Canon package. A restored DLL without its related files may still fail because the error can involve a missing dependency.

Fix 4: Check architecture and dependencies
A 64-bit Windows installation can use a 32-bit Canon printer utility. Therefore, do not assume that every printer component must be 64-bit.
Use the package Canon provides after selecting the exact printer and Windows version. Do not copy a 64-bit replacement into SysWOW64, or a 32-bit replacement into System32. Those folders are not interchangeable repair locations.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
To inspect a file that is already present:
- Right-click the DLL.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Use Task Manager > Details to inspect the related Canon executable.
If the message says “The specified module could not be found,” reinstall the complete Canon package rather than searching for a second DLL. The missing item may be a dependency that the error dialog does not name.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components
Windows repair commands are useful when system files or the Windows component store are damaged. They do not normally recreate a Canon driver file that was removed from a third-party package.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Windows PowerShell (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Canon software or print a test page.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. If both commands complete successfully but the Canon error remains, return to the Canon driver reinstall rather than repeating the commands indefinitely.
If you prefer an automated check while diagnosing damaged Windows components, Outbyte PC Repair can scan and identify issues; its full-version repair is optional, and DISM, SFC, and reinstalling the Canon package remain the appropriate manual paths.

Device Manager can remove a stale or malfunctioning printer driver, but it should be used carefully.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the Canon device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct Canon package.
If the device is not listed, select View > Show hidden devices and look for an old, greyed-out Canon entry. Remove it only when you are certain it belongs to the unused or damaged installation.
Windows Features is not a normal fix for this file. Do not enable optional Windows features in the hope that they will supply cnb_0280.dll; the file is associated with Canon software, not a standard Windows feature.
Why you should not download or register the DLL manually
Standalone DLL download sites can provide a wrong version, wrong architecture, modified file, or incomplete set of dependencies. Copying an unknown DLL into a Windows directory can also create search-order and version conflicts.

regsvr32 is not a general missing-DLL repair command. It is used for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. There is no verified requirement to register cnb_0280.dll manually. Running commands such as these is therefore not a sensible first repair:
regsvr32 cnb_0280.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32cnb_0280.dll
If a Canon installer specifically instructs you to register a component, follow that installer’s documented instructions. Otherwise, repair the complete driver package.

It is a fallback, not the normal repair.
