cnbbr284.dll is most likely a leftover, damaged, or incomplete component of Canon printer software. It is not a normal Windows file, and downloading a replacement DLL is usually the wrong repair.
Public file catalogs identify it as Canon Inkjet Printer Driver, attributed to CANON INC. Those catalogs report a 32-bit file, version 0.3.1536.1, approximately 46 KB in size, with a reported 2008 copyright. Treat those details as third-party catalog metadata, not proof that every Canon printer uses the same file.

The exact Canon printer model and installer package associated with your copy cannot be established from the filename alone. The safest repair is to identify the printer connected to the computer and reinstall its exact Canon driver or MP Drivers package.

A 32-bit Canon component can exist on 64-bit Windows. That does not mean it should be copied into a Windows system directory. The DLL must come from the Canon package intended for the printer and Windows version in use.

Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer package
This is the most likely solution when the error started after a Canon driver update, uninstall, printer replacement, Windows Update, disk cleanup, or system migration.
Identify the printer model
- Look at the printer’s front or rear label.
- Check Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer and note its complete model name.
- If the printer is no longer listed, check old print jobs, packaging, or the printer’s display.
Do not select a similar-looking Canon model. Overlapping driver components do not make packages interchangeable.
Remove the damaged Canon installation
- Press Windows key + I.
- Open Apps → Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps → Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the Canon printer software, MP Drivers, IJ utilities, or another package matching the printer.
- Select it and choose Uninstall.
- If the package does not appear there, open Control Panel.
- Select Programs → Programs and Features.
- Remove the model-specific Canon driver or MP Drivers entry.
- Restart Windows.
If Windows still lists the old printer, open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners, select it, and choose Remove. Do not remove unrelated printers unless you know they use the same obsolete Canon package.
Install the correct package
- Open Canon’s official support website.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Choose Drivers, Downloads, or Software.
- Select your installed Windows version and system architecture when prompted.
- Download the listed printer driver, MP Drivers, or complete Canon printer software package.
- If the installer requests it, disconnect or power off the printer.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Follow the connection instructions.
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Print a test page from Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
The repair worked if the Canon software opens without the DLL message and a test page prints normally. If the same message returns, uninstall the Canon package again, restart, and check whether an older Canon utility or driver remains before reinstalling.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through several driver packages and guessing which device software is stale. Its free scan shows detected driver issues, while the repair or driver installation is handled by the full version; for this Canon-specific problem, the exact model package from Canon remains the authoritative installation.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus removed the file
Windows Security or another antivirus product may quarantine an old driver component. Do not restore it simply because its filename appears in a file catalog.

- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Expand any detection related to the Canon installation.
- Check the original file path, detection name, and action taken.
- Restore the file only if it was inside a legitimate Canon driver directory and the Canon installer was obtained from Canon.
- If the detection is uncertain, leave the file quarantined.
- Download a fresh installer from Canon and reinstall the package instead.
Microsoft explains Protection History and restoration in its Windows Security guidance.
If the file is repeatedly quarantined, do not create a permanent antivirus exclusion. Submit the file or detection to the security vendor for analysis and use a fresh official Canon installer.

Sometimes the printer has been removed, but a Canon utility still launches at sign-in and requests its old DLL.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for Canon utilities or entries whose file path refers to an old printer installation.
- Right-click a clearly obsolete Canon entry and choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
You can also check Settings → Apps → Installed apps and remove Canon software for printers you no longer own. If disabling the entry stops the popup but printing still works, the problem was probably stale startup software rather than an active printer-driver failure.
If the error appears inside an unrelated application, note that application’s executable path. A program loading a stale Canon component should not be repaired by copying a DLL into that program’s folder.
Fix 4: Check the driver in Device Manager
Device Manager can reveal whether Windows has an incomplete printer installation.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if present, Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Canon printer, an unknown device, or a device with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the message under the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider, date, and version.
- Choose Uninstall Device only if you are prepared to reinstall the Canon package afterward.
- If offered, select Attempt to remove the driver for this device.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the exact Canon driver again.
A 32-bit DLL reported by a catalog does not automatically indicate that your Windows installation is wrong. The relevant match is between the Canon package, the printer model, the application loading it, and the supported Windows environment.
If Device Manager shows no Canon device but the error persists, investigate installed Canon software and startup entries rather than repeatedly scanning hardware.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
SFC and DISM are secondary repairs here. They primarily repair protected Windows components, not third-party Canon files. Use them when other Windows features are also failing, system files are damaged, or several applications report component errors.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft specifies running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker instructions.
Success means DISM completes without an unrepaired error and SFC reports that it repaired files or found no integrity violations. If SFC reports no violations, that does not prove the Canon driver is intact. Reinstall the Canon package if the DLL error continues.
When repeatedly running DISM and SFC becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can show detected Windows repair issues in one scan. Its free scan identifies problems, while repair is performed by the full version, and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the exact Canon driver.

System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver installation, Windows update, software removal, or other system change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Choose a different restore point if that option appears.
- Pick a restore point dated before the DLL error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the programs and drivers that will be changed.
- Select Next → Finish.
System Restore changes system files, settings, and installed programs but does not normally remove personal documents. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains the process.
If no suitable restore point exists, return to the Canon reinstall procedure. Do not use an old system image merely to recover one obscure printer component unless you understand what else will be rolled back.
What not to do
Do not download the DLL separately
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, an altered file, the wrong architecture, or a version that does not match the rest of the Canon package. Even a file with matching catalog hashes is not automatically safe because path, signature, and installer provenance still matter.
Download the complete driver from Canon instead.
Do not copy it into System32 or SysWOW64
Those directories are not general repair locations. Copying a 32-bit Canon component into a Windows directory can create version conflicts and leave the printer installation inconsistent.

Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that cnbbr284.dll is a COM or ActiveX server.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not run:
regsvr32 cnbbr284.dll
unless Canon’s exact driver documentation explicitly instructs you to do so. Microsoft documents the command’s behavior in its regsvr32 reference, but that does not make it appropriate for arbitrary printer-driver DLLs.
If the error still appears
Collect these details before attempting another repair:
- The complete error message
- The Canon printer model
- Windows 10 or Windows 11, including its installed version
- The program or executable showing the error
- The full path of that executable
- The path where
cnbbr284.dllwas found, if present - The result of the antivirus Protection History check
- The relevant entry from Event Viewer → Windows Logs → Application
- Whether printing works despite the popup
- Whether the error began after an update, uninstall, printer replacement, cleanup, migration, or system restore
“The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by cnbbr284.dll is missing. If reinstalling the exact Canon package does not help, the failing executable path and Event Viewer entry are more useful than downloading another copy of the DLL.
FAQ
