- The message appeared during Windows startup, Windows setup, or general system use: repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC.
- It appeared while connecting, reinstalling, or using old storage or changer hardware: inspect Device Manager and reinstall the original device driver package.
- It appeared after restoring an old Windows XP image, clone, or backup: restore from the same image or original installation media rather than downloading a matching filename.
- Windows Security recently quarantined something: check Protection history before attempting any replacement.
- A specific old installer or application displays the message: identify that installer first. Do not assume the application owns the DLL.
- You are running Windows 10 or 11 and cannot identify any related device: treat the file as a legacy component and start with system repair. Current Windows installations are not expected to contain every Windows XP-era file.
What mchgrcoi.dll actually does
A co-installer is a user-mode DLL that performs additional work during device installation. Microsoft documents that Windows invokes co-installers as part of the device-installation process and places them in %SystemRoot%System32; they are not ordinary application libraries that games load for graphics, sound, or runtime support.
The “Medium Changer” name relates to storage hardware that manages removable media or multiple storage units. The filename does not, by itself, identify a specific manufacturer or current device. It may be involved in an old driver package, Windows XP installation, restored system image, or legacy setup process.
Available file inventories associate mchgrcoi.dll mainly with Windows XP-era Windows. Reported records identify a Win32 file and commonly list version 5.1.2600.0, while an older Windows XP build record lists 5.1.2250.1. Treat those as historical file metadata, not as a universal version that should be copied onto every Windows 10 or Windows 11 system.
A file with the same name can still be wrong if it came from another Windows build, architecture, or driver package.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates, then repair system files
This is the safest starting point when the error is not clearly tied to one device installer.
1. Check for Windows updates
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install updates and restart.
Try the action that originally produced the error. If it still appears, continue with DISM and SFC.
2. Run DISM
DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source for protected system files.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window because progress can pause for several minutes.
3. Run SFC
In the same administrator window, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart after the scan completes. Then test Windows setup, the device, or the application that showed the message.
Success means the error no longer appears, or SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files. SFC does not guarantee that it will restore this exact DLL: it repairs protected files recognized by the servicing data in the installed Windows version.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files from Windows Update, use a matching Windows installation source:
Recommended Free Tools
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:X:Sourcesinstall.wim /LimitAccess
Replace X: with the actual installation-media drive letter. The source must match the installed Windows edition and build.
Repeating commands without knowing whether the component store changed makes troubleshooting guesswork. Outbyte PC Repair can show what its scan identifies, while repair is handled by the full version. It is optional; Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the built-in repair path.
Fix 2: Reinstall the affected storage-device driver
Use this route if the error began after connecting, removing, restoring, or reinstalling storage hardware.
Identify the device
- Right-click Start.
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand categories such as Disk drives, Storage controllers, Other devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for a warning icon, an unknown device, or hardware matching the device you recently changed.
- Double-click the entry and check the General and Events tabs.
The event history may show that Windows attempted to configure or start a device. That is more useful than searching for the DLL name in an application folder.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Reinstall the original driver
- Disconnect the affected device if its documentation permits it.
- In Device Manager, right-click the affected entry.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Leave the option to remove the driver package unchecked unless the original vendor instructions specifically require it.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the device.
- Run the original Microsoft or hardware vendor installer using Run as administrator.
Use the driver package supplied with the device, its original installation media, or the hardware vendor’s official support channel. Do not substitute a random DLL for a missing driver component.
Driver hunting becomes difficult when an old system has several similar storage entries or outdated packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and show which drivers it identifies as stale; the full version performs the driver installation. It is optional, and the original hardware vendor package remains the definitive source for an obsolete device.
Test the hardware again after restarting. If Device Manager immediately recreates the warning, the package may be incompatible with modern Windows, incomplete, or dependent on an older installation workflow.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus quarantine is a possible cause, but do not assume it caused the error without checking.

- The file is in the expected Windows or original driver location.
- The source is known and legitimate.
- The file’s signature and properties are consistent with that source.
- A current malware scan does not identify a threat.
If Defender detects the file again, do not keep restoring it. Microsoft warns that repeated detection can indicate a real security problem or a damaged package. Repair Windows or obtain the driver again from its original source.

If the error began after restoring a Windows XP backup, cloned disk, or old system image, the missing component may belong to that exact installation. A file from another build can produce an invalid-image, dependency, or entry-point error even when the filename matches.
Use, in order of preference:
- The same system image or backup.
- Original Windows installation media for that installation.
- A trusted System Restore point from before the failure.
- The original device driver package.
To start System Restore:
- Press Win+R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the error.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Confirm the restore.
System Restore changes system files, registry settings, and installed programs, but it does not remove personal files. If no suitable restore point exists, do not copy an unverified DLL into System32.

Do not use regsvr32 as a default fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. mchgrcoi.dll is identified as a device-installation co-installer, not a COM or ActiveX component.
This command is therefore not a routine repair:
regsvr32 mchgrcoi.dll
It may simply return an entry-point error. Reinstall the driver package or repair Windows instead.
Do not download and copy the DLL
A DLL download sites site cannot establish that its file matches your Windows build, architecture, servicing state, or driver package. Manual copying can introduce malware, an incompatible 32-bit or 64-bit file, missing dependencies, incorrect permissions, and servicing problems.
Do not copy mchgrcoi.dll into a game folder or application directory unless the original vendor installer explicitly requires that exact file. The safe sources are Windows servicing, matching installation media, a trusted system image, or the original hardware driver package.
Installing Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, or .NET is also not justified by this filename alone. Use those repairs only when the complete error identifies that runtime.
If none of the fixes work
If DISM, SFC, driver reinstall, and System Restore do not resolve the error:
- Test whether the failure occurs in another administrator account.
- Run the original installer again from clean, trusted media.
- Check whether the DLL repeatedly disappears after repair.
- Investigate disk errors or malware if files keep vanishing.
- Contact the hardware or software vendor if the legacy device is no longer supported.
- Consider an in-place Windows repair installation.
On Windows 11, where available, open Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now. This reinstalls the same Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
A clean reset is a last resort. Back up personal files first, and use it only when the installation remains damaged after less destructive recovery options.
FAQ
Is mchgrcoi.dll a virus?
The filename is associated with a genuine Microsoft Windows component, but a filename alone does not prove that a particular copy is safe. Verify its location, signature, source, and Windows Security status.
Does every Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC need this file?
No. Available evidence associates it primarily with Windows XP-era device installation. A modern Windows system should not be treated as defective merely because this legacy file is absent.
Is this a 32-bit or 64-bit DLL?
Reported historical records identify it as Win32 or 32-bit. That does not mean a 64-bit Windows installation needs a copied 32-bit replacement. Use the original driver or Windows repair source.
Should I reinstall Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually no. mchgrcoi.dll is not identified as one of those runtime components. First determine whether Windows or an old storage-device installer generated the error.
What does “the specified module could not be found” mean?
It can mean that mchgrcoi.dll is missing, but it can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing. Repairing the component store and reinstalling the original device package addresses both possibilities more safely than copying one file.
Should I copy the file into the application folder?
No. This is a Windows device-installation component, not a general-purpose application dependency. Copying it may hide the original problem while leaving the driver, dependency, or servicing issue unresolved.
