- “The program can’t start because libexif.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.”
- “libexif.dll was not found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because libexif.dll was not found.”
- “
...libexif.dllis either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.” - “The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b).”
- “Error loading libexif.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
These are different Windows loader messages, not proof of one universal cause. The correct fix depends on which application owns the file.
The 60-second answer
libexif.dll is a Windows build of libexif, an application library that reads and writes EXIF metadata in image files. EXIF is the information stored inside many pictures, such as camera details, orientation, timestamps, and location data.
It is not a Windows system DLL. Do not download a replacement from a random DLL website, copy one into System32, or run regsvr32 as a first step.

Instead:
- Read the complete path shown in the error.
- Identify the application in that folder.
- Repair or verify that application using its official installer or launcher.
- Check whether antivirus software quarantined the file.
- If the error continues, investigate architecture, dependencies, and the application’s installation path.
The same filename can be built and shipped by different application vendors. There is no single universal version, size, publisher, or replacement directory for every libexif.dll.
Why libexif.dll is missing
The file usually belongs to the program that installed it. Older Chromium-based software and applications that handle images, maps, photos, or embedded browser content may include a private copy beside their executable. Other software may use it as part of a bundled image-processing component.
Common causes include:
- An interrupted application update
- An incomplete reinstall or damaged archive extraction
- Manual deletion or disk cleanup
- Antivirus quarantine
- Disk or file-system corruption
- A replacement with the wrong architecture
- A missing dependency required by the application’s copy
- An abandoned shortcut pointing to an older installation
- Malware or bundled software using the filename deceptively
The filename alone cannot identify the owning program.
Identify the application that owns the file
Read the complete path
Look closely at the error dialog. The path may reveal the owner, such as a browser, game, photo utility, or another application directory.
Do not focus only on the filename. A copy in an application folder is normally private to that application, while a copy in a temporary or unfamiliar folder deserves additional scrutiny.
Search for every copy
Open PowerShell and run:
Get-ChildItem C: -Filter libexif.dll -File -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue |
Select-Object FullName,Length,LastWriteTime
The search can take time and may return access-denied locations without showing them. Compare each result with the path in the error and note whether the file is beside an .exe belonging to software you recognize.
Inspect the file
Right-click the file and choose Properties. Review:
- General: location, size, and whether Windows reports that it is blocked
- Details: version and product information, if supplied
- Digital Signatures: signer and signature status
There may be no useful version information. A listed 32-bit 10.0.0.28, 64-bit 0.0.0.0, or 32-bit 0.0.0.0 value is not a universal standard for this file and does not tell you which copy your application needs.

Right-click the likely .exe, choose Properties, and review its Details and Digital Signatures tabs. If the folder belongs to an unknown program, do not restore a quarantined DLL until you have checked the software’s source and scanned the system.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the owning application
This is the safest and most likely solution because it restores the complete, matching application bundle rather than just one file.

Repair from Windows Settings
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the application named by the error path.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Start the application again.
Repair normally preserves the application and its data. If the error remains, return to the same screen and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings or local data.
Repair from Control Panel
For traditional desktop software:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select Programs and Features.
- Find the application.
- Right-click it.
- Choose Repair or Change.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If neither repair option exists, uninstall the program, restart the computer, and reinstall it from the publisher’s official installer. For a game, use the official launcher rather than manually replacing the DLL.

Verify game files
If the error belongs to a game:
- Open the game launcher.
- Select the affected game.
- Open its settings or management menu.
- Choose Verify files, Verify integrity, Repair, or equivalent.
- Wait for the launcher to replace missing or damaged files.
- Start the game again.
If verification fails, reinstall the game through its official launcher. Do not copy a DLL downloaded elsewhere into the game directory.
A successful repair means the application starts without the error and the restored file appears in the application’s expected folder. If the file disappears again, continue to the security checks below.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine an application’s bundled DLL. A valid signature for one file does not prove that every file named libexif.dll belongs to safe software.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection associated with the application folder.
- Confirm the file path, detected item, publisher, and owning application.
- Choose Restore only if you have verified that the application came from a legitimate source and the file belongs to it.
Microsoft warns that restoring a threat can cause it to be detected again. Do not blindly choose Allow on device. If you cannot verify the file, leave it quarantined, run a scan, and reinstall the application from its official source.
After restoring a legitimate file, update the application and Defender definitions, then test the program. If Defender removes the file again, contact the application vendor or reinstall the program instead of repeatedly restoring it.
Fix 3: Check architecture and dependent files
A 32-bit application needs a compatible 32-bit library. A 64-bit application needs a compatible 64-bit library. A file with the correct name can still be the wrong build.
Architecture problems commonly produce:
- “Not designed to run on Windows”
0xc000007b- Immediate startup failure after manually replacing the file
Do not solve this by downloading both architectures and trying them. Replace the complete application installation using its official repair or reinstall process.
The message “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that libexif.dll exists but one of its own dependencies is missing. In that situation, reinstall the application and use the prerequisite identified by its installer or vendor. Do not assume that DirectX, .NET, or Visual C++ is responsible just because the application fails to start.

Check Visual C++ only when indicated
Visual C++ does not provide libexif itself. Install a Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only when the application also reports a missing Visual C++ runtime or its vendor specifically requires it.
Microsoft provides these current package names:
vc_redist.x86.exefor 32-bit applicationsvc_redist.x64.exefor 64-bit applicationsvc_redist.arm64.exefor ARM64 applications
Use the architecture required by the application, not simply the architecture of Windows. Restart Windows after installation and test the program.
Windows Features are not a normal libexif fix
Windows optional features do not normally supply libexif.dll. To inspect them:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
optionalfeaturesand press Enter. - Review the enabled features.
- Change a feature only when the application’s documentation specifically requires it.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Do not enable random legacy components to replace an application-private DLL.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components when other programs also fail
Windows Update, DISM, and SFC cannot recreate a private libexif.dll that belongs to another application. Use them when several unrelated Windows programs report corruption or when you suspect broader system damage.
First install pending updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open Command Prompt as administrator:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands finish. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the affected applications. If it reports that it could not repair everything, repeat the process after Windows Update completes and investigate broader disk or Windows recovery options.
Repeatedly running SFC or DISM will not restore an application’s private DLL. Outbyte PC Repair can show what system issues its free scan detects, while repairs are performed by the full version; the application’s own official reinstall remains the definitive fix when libexif.dll belongs to that program.
Fix 5: Review drivers only for a driver-related application
A graphics driver is not normally the source of libexif.dll. Update or reinstall a driver only when the failing program is a vendor’s driver companion application or the vendor specifically identifies a driver problem.
Recommended Free Tools
To inspect devices:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device.
- Select Properties and review the Driver tab.
- Use Update Driver or uninstall the device only according to the hardware vendor’s instructions.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not use Device Manager to replace an application DLL. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers, with driver installation handled by the full version; use it only when a driver issue is actually connected to the failing application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why common DLL fixes do not apply
Do not copy libexif.dll to System32
libexif.dll is not a standard Windows component. Copying it to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can create version conflicts and does not repair the application that requested it.
Windows normally searches the application directory as part of its DLL loading process. Several legitimate applications can therefore contain separate copies.
Do not use random DLL download websites
Untrusted DLL sites may provide:
- Malware or tampered files
- The wrong architecture
- A build intended for another application
- An obsolete or incompatible version
- A file that leaves the actual installation damage unresolved
Safe sources are the application publisher’s official installer, its official launcher verification or repair feature, and documented developer package ecosystems when you are building software. The upstream libexif project supplies source packages and Windows guidance, not one universal repair DLL for all Windows applications.

Do not run regsvr32 normally
regsvr32 is intended for registerable DLLs that expose entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. A normal image-processing runtime library is not expected to be registered.
Only use regsvr32 when the application vendor explicitly instructs you to register that exact DLL and provides the correct command. Otherwise, running it is unlikely to help.
If the error remains after reinstalling
Check these points in order:
- Confirm the shortcut launches the newly installed executable.
- Search for stale duplicate installations.
- Compare the path in the error with the current installation path.
- Check whether antivirus removes the file again.
- Confirm that the application and its dependencies have matching architecture.
- Run the application’s installer as administrator if the vendor recommends it.
- Scan unfamiliar temporary or startup locations with Microsoft Defender.
- If the problem began after a known system change, consider System Restore.
If every application reports DLL errors, treat the issue as a wider Windows, disk, malware, or user-profile problem rather than a single libexif installation issue.
FAQ
Is libexif.dll part of Windows 10 or Windows 11?
No. It is an application library, not a standard Windows component. Windows Update and SFC should not be expected to supply it.
Is there one correct libexif.dll version?
No. Different applications can ship different builds. The upstream libexif release is not automatically the version required by an installed application.
Could Chrome or another Chromium application need it?
Older Chromium-based application bundles have included libexif.dll, but the filename does not prove that a particular browser owns your copy. Use the complete path and inspect the nearby executable.
Will reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET fix it?
Not normally. Install those components only when the error also identifies a dependency provided by that package.
The file is present. Why does Windows still say it is missing?
The file may have the wrong architecture, a missing dependency, damaged contents, blocked access, or a quarantine problem. Repair the complete application rather than registering or relocating the DLL.
Should I restore a quarantined copy?
Only after confirming its path, publisher, signature, and application ownership. If any of those are uncertain, keep it quarantined and reinstall the application from its official source.
