Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, check:
- Which program shows the error: a Canon printer utility, scanner tool, startup item, or another application.
- When it appears: during printing, scanning, driver installation, Windows startup, or after removing a printer.
- Which Windows edition and architecture you use: open Settings > System > About and check System type.
- Where the file is expected: the original Canon driver directory is not publicly documented, so do not assume it belongs in
System32orSysWOW64.

cnbfus4.dll is associated with the Canon Inkjet Printer Driver and is reported as being from CANON INC. If Windows says cnbfus4.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest first repair is to identify the Canon printer model and reinstall its official Windows driver or MP Drivers package.
What is cnbfus4.dll?
cnbfus4.dll is a driver-related DLL used by Canon printer software. It is not a normal Windows component, DirectX file, .NET file, or Visual C++ Redistributable file.

Public file records have reported an older 32-bit build associated with the Canon Inkjet Printer Driver, but those records do not establish which printer models use it today. Canon does not provide a general cnbfus4.dll download page, a publicly documented original directory, or a verified current hash for this file.

The error may appear as:
- “The program can’t start because cnbfus4.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because cnbfus4.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting cnbfus4.dll.”
- “Error loading cnbfus4.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “cnbfus4.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are generic Windows loader messages, not proof that Canon uses that exact wording. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency required by cnbfus4.dll is missing.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer package
This is the most likely solution when the error began after a printer uninstall, failed setup, Windows upgrade, driver update, or Canon software cleanup.
Identify the printer model
Check the printer itself, its old packaging, a previous invoice, or Windows:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Look for the Canon printer name and model.
- If it is listed, open it and note the model exactly.
If the printer is missing, check Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers. You can also look in Settings > Apps > Installed apps for Canon software names.
Remove the damaged printer entry
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Select Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
Do not delete random files from C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or the Windows driver store. The original Canon installation directory is not known from the filename alone.
Download and install the official package
Use Canon’s support portal and search for the exact printer model. Select your Windows version and system architecture, then download the printer driver or the model’s MP Drivers package. Install the complete package rather than only an optional utility if you need scanning, maintenance, ink status, or printer monitoring.
After installation:
- Restart Windows if the installer requests it.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Add the Canon printer.
- Print a test page.
- Open the Canon utility that previously produced the error.
If printing works but scanning or maintenance still fails, the basic Windows printer driver may be present while Canon’s full utility package is not. Install the complete model-specific Canon package.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through several driver versions and identifying stale hardware entries; its free scan shows what it finds, while driver installation is handled by the full version. Reinstalling the exact Canon package remains the definitive fix for this Canon-specific DLL.
Fix 2: Check Windows architecture and driver compatibility
Do not treat the reported 32-bit metadata as proof that every Canon package uses the same build. A 32-bit printer utility can run on 64-bit Windows, but its surrounding driver package must still support your printer and Windows release.
To check your architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
- Return to Canon’s model support page.
- Choose the matching Windows version and architecture when available.
Avoid placing a 32-bit DLL in System32 simply because the error names a DLL. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is primarily used for 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 supports many 32-bit system components. Neither folder is a general-purpose location for Canon driver files.

If Canon does not provide a current package for an older printer, try the available compatible Canon package first. A generic Windows driver may restore printing but may not restore scanning, status monitoring, or maintenance features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a damaged or suspicious Canon file, leaving an installed utility unable to start.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand an item only if it clearly refers to the Canon installation.
- Check its path and detection details.
Do not restore the file merely because its name is cnbfus4.dll. Restore it only when it came from a genuine Canon installation and the package is trusted. Reinstalling the official Canon package is safer than restoring an isolated DLL.
If the file is in a temporary folder, a user-profile folder, or an unrelated application directory, leave it quarantined until you scan the computer. Run a full scan through Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options. An offline scan is appropriate when a suspicious file repeatedly returns or starts before normal Windows operation.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components, but do not expect SFC to recreate Canon files
System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and Management repair protected Windows components. They generally do not restore a third-party Canon DLL that was removed from a printer package.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin).
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the Canon application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, retest the application. If it reports no integrity violations but the Canon error remains, reinstall the Canon driver rather than repeating the commands.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of checking corrupted Windows components less repetitive by showing what its free scan detects; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the Canon package that owns this DLL.
Fix 5: Remove leftover Canon software after an incomplete uninstall
A failed update can leave a Canon startup entry or utility pointing to a file that no longer exists.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Canon.
- Uninstall the Canon printer software clearly associated with the affected device.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove the printer from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners if it remains.
- Install the current model-specific Canon driver package.
If several Canon printers are installed, remove only the package associated with the failing printer. Do not delete arbitrary driver-store entries or registry values.

If the message appears on every boot after the printer was removed, inspect Task Manager > Startup apps for an obsolete Canon entry. Disable only the clearly identified Canon component, then restart. If it is a scheduled task, open Task Scheduler, review the task’s action and path, and remove it only when it unmistakably belongs to the uninstalled Canon software.

Fix 6: Determine whether the dependency is actually missing
Windows may name cnbfus4.dll even when another file is the real problem.
Record the complete message and the executable that launches it. Then:
- Open Event Viewer from the Start menu.
- Select Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error at the same time as the popup.
- Note the application name and module path.
- Check Canon installation or setup logs if available.
If the message names another DLL, repair that dependency instead of repeatedly copying cnbfus4.dll. A missing Microsoft runtime may require an official Microsoft repair, while a missing Canon component requires the Canon driver package.
Does regsvr32 fix cnbfus4.dll?
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or OLE DLLs that provide a DllRegisterServer entry point. It is not a general DLL installation command. Running:
regsvr32 cnbfus4.dll
will not restore a missing file, repair a damaged Canon installer, or fix a missing dependency. It can produce an error stating that the entry point was not found.
Use regsvr32 only if Canon’s instructions for the exact printer package explicitly require it. Otherwise, reinstall the driver.
Is it safe to download cnbfus4.dll separately?
Do not download it from a random DLL site. A standalone file may have the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, missing dependencies, or malicious changes. It may also be placed in the wrong directory and create DLL search-order problems.

If a suitable package exists, install it after removing the broken package. If none exists, a generic Windows printer driver may provide basic printing. It may not restore scanning or Canon maintenance tools.
If the failure began immediately after a Windows update, review Settings > Windows Update > Update history and check Canon compatibility information. System Restore can roll back drivers, installed programs, and registry settings when a suitable restore point exists:
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Confirm the affected programs before proceeding.
Frequently asked questions
Is cnbfus4.dll a Windows system file?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a Windows component. It is associated with Canon Inkjet Printer Driver software.
Is it a Visual C++ runtime file?
There is no reliable evidence for that. Do not install Visual C++ Redistributable packages unless the error also names a Microsoft runtime such as MSVCP*.dll or VCRUNTIME*.dll.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. The original Canon directory is not publicly verified, and copying a DLL to a system folder can introduce compatibility and search-order problems.
How do I know which Canon printer installed it?
Check installed printers, Canon applications, old printer documentation, and the executable named in the error. The exact printer models associated with this DLL are not publicly established.

One-click scans. No signup required.
What if reinstalling Canon software does nothing?
Check the full error for a dependent DLL, inspect Event Viewer, verify the executable and file path, and scan the file if it is outside a Canon directory. The popup may come from an orphaned Canon startup component rather than the printer currently in use.
When should I suspect malware?
Be cautious when the file is outside a Canon installation directory, lacks trustworthy origin, is repeatedly recreated, or is detected by Windows Security. Scan it before restoring or replacing anything.
