Before replacing anything, note:
- Which program shows the error: the named application may only be the process that exposed a Windows problem.
- When it began: after an update, cleanup, antivirus action, driver installation, disk problem, or failed repair.
- Which path is mentioned: the normal Windows locations are
%SystemRoot%System32and, for the 32-bit component on 64-bit Windows,%SystemRoot%SysWOW64. - Whether the error says missing or could not be loaded: those messages do not always mean the same thing.
- Whether Windows is 64-bit: open Settings > System > About and check System type.

A replacement can be unsigned, modified, the wrong architecture, or from a different Windows build. It may also leave the damaged Windows component store untouched.
What is devicepairingproxy.dll?
devicepairingproxy.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows system library named Device Pairing Proxy Dll. It is associated with Windows device-pairing functionality, not with Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, a game, or a general-purpose third-party application.

Historical file inventories show different versions across Windows releases. Do not use an old version number, file size, or hash as a reason to copy a DLL from another computer.
What the error messages mean
“devicepairingproxy.dll is missing” or “not found”
Windows or an application cannot locate the expected file. It may have been deleted, quarantined, damaged, or removed during an incomplete update or cleanup operation.
“Could not be loaded” or “The specified module could not be found”
The DLL itself may be absent, but the message can also mean that a dependency required by the DLL is missing or damaged. Replacing only the named file is therefore often ineffective.
“The file is corrupted”
Windows has detected that the file or a related component does not match what it expects. Component-store repair is more appropriate than downloading a substitute.
“Not designed to run on Windows”
This is standard loader-style wording that can indicate an invalid binary, wrong architecture, corruption, or a mismatched Windows build. It is not proof that the file is malware, but it does require a trusted-file check.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Windows servicing is the safest first repair because it can restore system files using the correct build.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not insist.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
- Test the program that displayed the error.
If the error remains, continue with the repair commands below. A pending or interrupted update can leave a system file unavailable until servicing completes.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component source, and SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired source.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program again.
Microsoft documents these commands in its guide to repairing missing or corrupted system files: Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
If SFC reports that it found corrupt files and repaired them, restart and test again. If it says that it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat sfc /scannow.
If DISM says that source files could not be found, use a matching Windows installation source rather than a downloaded DLL. Microsoft explains the /Source and /LimitAccess options in its Windows image repair documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsManually hunting through repair commands and repeating SFC or DISM without knowing what changed can be frustrating. Outbyte PC Repair offers a scan that shows reported problems, while its repair functions require the full version; it is optional, and Windows servicing remains the proper first repair.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
An antivirus action can explain why the file disappeared, but do not restore a quarantined DLL automatically.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an entry naming
DevicePairingProxy.dll. - Expand the entry and inspect the original file path and detection details.
If the original path was not a real Windows directory, treat the file as suspicious. Run a full scan and allow Windows repair to restore the legitimate component.
If Defender identified a file in %SystemRoot%System32 or %SystemRoot%SysWOW64, check its signature and context before choosing Restore or Allow on device. A valid location alone does not prove that a file is safe.

Microsoft’s instructions for reviewing these decisions are in Protection history in the Windows Security app.
Fix 4: Verify the file path and Microsoft signature
If the file is present, check that it is the Windows copy.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
%SystemRoot%System32
- Press Enter.
- Find
DevicePairingProxy.dll. - Right-click it and select Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signer and click Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid Microsoft signature.
On 64-bit Windows, repeat the check in:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64
Do not replace one architecture with the other. System32 normally serves 64-bit system components, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows. A 32-bit application can therefore involve the SysWOW64 copy even though the computer itself is 64-bit.
Do not copy a file from another Windows installation. Builds, servicing levels, dependencies, and architecture can differ.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is useful when the problem began immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or other system modification.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, updates, and installed programs. It normally preserves personal files. If no restore point exists, return to DISM and SFC rather than trying an arbitrary DLL.
Fix 6: Reinstall Windows while keeping your files and apps
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the component, broader Windows damage may be involved. Back up important files first.

- Obtain installation media that matches your installed Windows edition and language.
- Open the media in File Explorer.
- Run

- Select Keep personal files and apps.
- Continue with the installation.
The keep-files-and-apps choice matters. Microsoft’s installation-media repair instructions explain the available options.
Should you use regsvr32?
Usually, no.
DevicePairingProxy.dll exposes COM-style registration functions, including DllRegisterServer, so it is technically a registerable DLL. However, regsvr32 only registers a trusted DLL’s COM information. It does not restore a missing file, repair the component store, correct a dependency, or select the proper 32-bit or 64-bit copy.
Do not treat this as a general fix:
regsvr32 DevicePairingProxy.dll
Only use regsvr32 when diagnostics specifically identify a COM-registration problem and the file is already a correct, Microsoft-signed Windows copy in the appropriate directory. For a missing, corrupt, or “not designed to run” error, use Windows Update, DISM, and SFC first. Microsoft explains the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 documentation.
Do drivers or Windows Features need repair?
Device pairing can involve Bluetooth, USB, wireless, and other device services, but reinstalling a driver will not normally recreate a damaged Windows system DLL.

If the error began with a device problem:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Bluetooth, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
Use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page when Windows cannot find a suitable driver. Do not replace DevicePairingProxy.dll with a driver download.
Tracking down which of many installed drivers is stale can take time, especially when the pairing error appears intermittently. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify reported driver issues, while driver installation through the full version is optional; it does not replace Windows component repair.
Do not enable or disable random Windows Features for this file. Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX, and .NET are not the normal owners of DevicePairingProxy.dll, and reinstalling them is unlikely to restore it.
When the problem may be malware or failing hardware
Take the situation more seriously when:
- The file exists outside the Windows directories.
- Its digital signature is missing or invalid.
- The file returns after deletion or quarantine.
- Other system files fail at the same time.
- DISM and SFC repeatedly fail.
- Windows reports disk errors or freezes.
- The problem began after suspicious software was installed.
Run a full scan in Windows Security. Back up important files if disk failure is possible. Persistent corruption after a successful repair can indicate storage problems, malware, or a damaged Windows installation.
FAQ
Is devicepairingproxy.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. It is a Microsoft Windows system DLL associated with device-pairing functionality. A file with the same name outside the expected Windows directory should be checked carefully rather than trusted automatically.
Is it part of an installed game or application?
Not normally. An application can expose the error while Windows supplies the damaged component. Reinstalling the named program helps only when its own application directory contains the missing file.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Usually not. This DLL is not a Visual C++ Redistributable file. Repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead.
Why does “the specified module could not be found” appear when the file exists?
The loader may be unable to find a dependency, or the existing DLL may be corrupt or the wrong architecture. Check the signature and location, then repair Windows rather than copying another DLL.
Can I download the DLL from another site?
Do not. The file may be modified, unsigned, mismatched to your Windows build, or the wrong bitness. The safe source is Windows servicing or a matching Windows repair installation.
Should I copy the file into the application folder?
No. That can cause Windows to load an incorrect local copy and can hide the real component problem. Repair the Windows copy first. Use an application repair only when the error clearly points to a DLL owned by that application.
What if SFC still cannot repair it?
Run DISM first, repeat SFC, and review %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. If DISM cannot find repair source files, use matching installation media or perform an in-place Windows repair that keeps personal files and apps.
