When Windows reports that cnblh4_2.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the safest fix is to identify the Canon printer that installed it and reinstall its matching driver package.
Do not download the DLL by itself or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32. The file may belong in the Windows Driver Store or a Canon-specific driver directory, and a standalone replacement may have the wrong architecture, version, dependencies, or source.

Common error messages
You may see variations such as:
- “The program can’t start because cnblh4_2.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting cnblh4_2.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Error loading cnblh4_2.dll.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because cnblh4_2.dll was not found.”
- “cnblh4_2.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages are commonly reported variants rather than a Canon-maintained list of official error messages. The failure may occur when Windows starts, while printing, when opening Canon utilities, or during printer removal.
First, identify the Canon installation
The filename does not tell you which Canon model needs repair. Start with the device and software already installed on the computer.

Check installed printers
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Review the installed printers and note every Canon model.
- Select a Canon printer and open its properties or device details.
On Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners instead.
Also check printers that are offline or no longer connected. A network printer, an old USB printer, or a previous Canon installation may still have its driver registered.
Check installed Canon software
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Look for Canon printer drivers, setup utilities, scanning software, or maintenance programs.
- Note the product name and model before removing anything.
If you do not own a Canon printer, inspect old printer software, network-printer installations, optional driver updates, startup entries, and scheduled printer utilities. cnblh4_2.dll alone is not enough to identify malware or a particular device.
Inspect the erroring path
If the error names a program or executable:
- Note the executable name in the error message.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc if the message appears during startup.
- Check the Startup apps list for Canon-related entries.
- Search File Explorer for
cnblh4_2.dll. - Right-click any result and select Open file location.
- Record the containing folder without moving or deleting the file.
A path under a printer-driver folder or the Windows Driver Store supports the Canon-driver explanation. The exact path can vary by printer model and Windows version.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer driver
This is the most likely solution for a missing or damaged cnblh4_2.dll.
Use Canon’s official Software & Drivers support portal and select the exact printer model. Choose a package that matches your Windows edition and architecture. Do not search for a universal cnblh4_2.dll download because Canon does not provide a verified universal DLL package.

- Disconnect the Canon printer’s USB cable if Canon’s installer instructions request it.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Remove the related Canon setup or driver software if the Canon instructions recommend doing so.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the model-specific Canon installer.
- Connect the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows again if prompted.
- Print a test page.
On Windows 10, the printer is under Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners, and applications are under Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
If Windows still shows an old package after removal, use the classic print-server properties:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Press Windows + R.
- Type
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the old Canon driver.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package when offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct Canon package again.
Only remove a driver when you have identified it as belonging to the affected Canon printer. Removing a shared package can affect another printer.
Manually hunting through Windows settings for stale driver versions can take time, especially when several printers are installed. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and show what needs attention; its repair and driver installation features are handled by the full version, while reinstalling the exact Canon package remains the preferred fix for this file.
How to confirm the repair
The repair worked if:
- Windows no longer displays the DLL error at startup.
- The Canon utility opens normally.
- The printer appears without a warning icon.
- A Windows test page prints successfully.
- The affected application no longer reports
cnblh4_2.dll.
If printing fails but the DLL message is gone, troubleshoot the printer queue, connection, ink or toner status, and the selected default printer separately.
Fix 2: Check antivirus quarantine before restoring anything
Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined or deleted a driver file. A quarantine event does not prove that the file was safe, so do not restore it automatically.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review detections around the time the error began.
- Expand any entry mentioning
cnblh4_2.dll, Canon, or the affected printer. - Check the detected file path and action.
If the file came from a genuine Canon installation, scan the computer and reinstall the driver from Canon rather than restoring the isolated DLL. If the detection identifies an unknown location or an unsigned file, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause it to be detected again. Only allow a file when its origin and safety are verified. A clean driver reinstall is safer than adding an antivirus exclusion for an unverified DLL.
Fix 3: Update the printer through Windows
Windows Update may offer a suitable Canon driver, although the manufacturer’s model-specific package is preferable when available.
Install optional driver updates on Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Select only the update that matches the identified Canon printer.
- Select Download & install.
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft documents recommended hardware-driver updates and advises using the manufacturer’s website when Windows Update cannot find a suitable driver.

Update through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the Canon device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the problem began immediately after an update:
- Right-click the Canon device in Device Manager.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Restart Windows.
A generic Windows driver may allow basic printing but omit Canon utilities or required components. If the error remains, remove the generic installation and use Canon’s model-specific package.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components only when other problems exist
cnblh4_2.dll is a third-party Canon driver file, so System File Checker is not the primary repair. Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself also shows corruption, failed updates, damaged system components, or multiple unrelated errors.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the Canon driver afterward.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command is guaranteed to restore a third-party Canon DLL.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing whether Windows or the printer package changed can make troubleshooting difficult. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows problems and identify repair areas; its repair functions are provided by the full version, and it should not replace reinstalling the Canon package.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
Use System Restore if the error began immediately after a Windows update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or printer change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can roll back drivers, installed programs, and system settings without normally changing personal files. It does not replace installing a compatible current Canon driver. If no suitable restore point exists, return to the Canon-driver reinstall.
What not to do
Do not copy the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64
Printer-driver files are installed in locations selected by the driver package. Copying a 32-bit file into a system folder does not make it a valid Windows component and can create conflicts.
Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites sites may provide malware, an outdated sample, the wrong architecture, or a file with missing dependencies. A manually copied DLL often leaves the damaged Canon installation unchanged.

Do not mix Canon driver files
A file from another Canon model or driver generation may not match the printer, operating system, language, or dependencies. Reinstall the complete package intended for the exact model.
Do not use regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose the COM registration entry point DllRegisterServer. A printer-driver DLL is not automatically self-registering. Running commands such as these is therefore not a reliable fix:

regsvr32 cnblh4_2.dll
regsvr32 /u cnblh4_2.dll
If registration is attempted on a DLL that does not support it, Windows may report that the entry point was not found. Install the driver instead.
Architecture and Windows 11 compatibility
A public sample of cnblh4_2.dll is reported as 32-bit, but that does not establish the architecture of every copy. A 32-bit printer component can be used by a 32-bit Canon driver even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Check your Windows architecture with:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Review System type.
Use the package Canon supplies for the exact printer and Windows version. Do not replace a 32-bit component with a 64-bit DLL simply because the operating system is 64-bit.
Older printers may also lack current Windows 11 support. Microsoft is changing how new third-party legacy printer drivers are distributed through Windows Update, so an old device may require a vendor-supplied installation package rather than an automatically offered driver.
FAQ
Is cnblh4_2.dll a Windows file?
No evidence identifies it as a Windows system DLL. It is associated with Canon Inkjet Printer Driver software.
Which Canon printer uses it?
The filename does not identify a specific model. Check installed printers, Canon software, driver properties, and the file’s containing folder.
Can I restore the file from antivirus quarantine?
Only after verifying its origin and safety. Reinstalling the official Canon driver is usually safer than restoring a single quarantined file.
Does “specified module could not be found” always mean the DLL is missing?
No. It can also indicate a missing dependency or an incomplete driver installation. A clean, matching driver reinstall addresses both problems more reliably than copying the DLL.
What if no Canon printer is installed?
Check old printer packages, network printers, startup entries, scheduled tasks, and the executable named by the error. If the path is suspicious, leave any quarantined file isolated and run a security scan.
What is the final fix if the error remains?
Confirm the exact printer model, remove the old Canon package, restart, install the correct Canon driver, and test printing. If the failure began after a system change, try System Restore. Use DISM and SFC only when there are separate signs of Windows corruption.
