If Windows says it is missing or cannot be loaded, the safest fix is to identify the Canon printer or scanner software that installed it and reinstall that program from its official package.
The filename alone cannot prove which Canon model is affected. It has appeared in Canon printer and scanner driver packages, including packages for PIXMA multifunction devices.

Before you start: identify the affected program
Read the complete error message and note the program named in its title bar or surrounding text. It may mention a Canon printer utility, scanning software, setup program, or an executable that starts when Windows logs in.
Also record:
- The Canon printer or scanner model printed on the device
- Whether the problem affects printing, scanning, or both
- Whether you use Windows 10 or Windows 11
- The exact executable named in the error
- The full path shown for
cnhl10a.dll, if Windows or a diagnostic tool provides one
If the error appeared after removing a Canon printer, an interrupted setup, a Windows upgrade, antivirus activity, or disk cleanup, start with the driver repair below.

1. Reinstall the exact Canon driver package
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the most likely solution. Canon packages may include the printer driver, ScanGear scanner driver, setup files, and supporting modules. Replacing one DLL does not restore those related files or the application registration.
Remove the existing Canon software
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- On Windows 11, choose Installed apps. On Windows 10, choose Apps & features.
- Search for the Canon model name.
- Uninstall entries such as Canon printer software, Canon scanning software, MP Drivers, or the model-specific driver.
- Restart Windows.
If the Canon software is not listed:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, or Scanners.
- Right-click the affected Canon device and choose Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it.
- Select Uninstall, then restart.
Do not remove unrelated printer drivers unless you know they belong to the same failed Canon installation.
Download and install the replacement
- Open Canon’s official support site.
- Search using the exact model number from the device label.
- Select your Windows version and system architecture when Canon asks.
- Prefer the package named MP Drivers or Full Driver & Software Package when available.
- Download the installer.
- Run it and follow the connection instructions.
- If the installer requests that you disconnect the USB cable, do so. Reconnect it only when the installer asks.
- Restart Windows after installation.
Canon recommends removing the previous MP Driver before installing the latest version. A complete package is preferable to copying cnhl10a.dll from another computer.

Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Some public records list cnhl10a.dll as a 32-bit version 1.0.0.0 file of roughly 0.15 MB, while other indexed records disagree about architecture and size. Do not choose a package based on a download page’s bit label.
To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
Use the package Canon provides for your exact model and Windows installation. A 32-bit application can still need a 32-bit Canon module on 64-bit Windows, so installing a random 64-bit replacement is not a solution.
What success looks like: the Canon utility opens, printing or scanning works, and the same error does not return after restarting Windows.
If the error remains, continue to the antivirus and dependency checks rather than copying a DLL into a system folder.

2. Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Antivirus software may quarantine a driver component after installation or during a later scan. Reinstalling from Canon is safer than restoring an isolated DLL, but Protection History can explain why the file disappeared.

- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent entries for the Canon installer, Canon utility, or

Only consider restoring a file if you can confirm that it came from a legitimate Canon installer and the surrounding installation is trusted. Do not disable Windows Security broadly to force an unknown DLL to run.
A safer sequence is:
- Note the quarantined file and its original path.
- Remove or leave the quarantine entry in place.
- Download a fresh package from Canon.
- Run a custom or full scan if the detection was unexpected.
- Contact the security vendor if a newly downloaded official installer is repeatedly detected.
What success looks like: the Canon installer completes without the component being removed, and the affected utility starts normally.

3. Repair the Canon device entry in Device Manager
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A damaged device entry can prevent a printer or scanner driver from loading even after an installation appears to finish.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Canon model, an unknown device, or a device with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected entry and select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Canon model-specific installer again.
For a printer that remains listed in Windows:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the Canon package before adding the printer again.
What success looks like: Device Manager shows no warning icon, the Canon model appears under Printers or Scanners, and a test print or scan completes.
If the installer cannot detect the device, check the USB cable, try another USB port, and follow the installer’s instructions about when to connect the device.
4. Repair Windows components only if Windows has wider problems
Time needed: 15–40 minutes
cnhl10a.dll is associated with Canon software, so Windows repair commands will not normally restore it. Use DISM and SFC when Windows itself also shows damaged system files, failed built-in apps, update errors, or unexplained system instability.
Microsoft recommends installing pending updates and restarting before running these commands.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the Canon driver package if the DLL error continues.
SFC repairs protected Windows files. It does not normally recover a Canon DLL that belongs to an application or third-party driver bundle.

When repeating DISM and SFC manually becomes guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can show detected Windows problems in a free scan; repairs are performed by the full version. It is not required, and reinstalling the affected Canon application remains the direct repair for this file.
What success looks like: Windows reports that corruption was repaired or no integrity violations were found, and other Windows symptoms improve. If only the Canon program still fails, return to the Canon package rather than repeating SFC indefinitely.
5. Use System Restore after a recent failed change
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
System Restore can help when the error began immediately after a Canon update, Windows migration, driver installation, or uninstall. It may undo applications, drivers, settings, and updates installed after the selected restore point.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
Use this only when you understand what later changes may be reversed. After the restoration, install the correct Canon package if the driver itself is still incomplete.
Do not copy cnhl10a.dll into System32
Avoid standalone DLL download sites. An isolated file may contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible version, or no matching dependent files. It can also leave multiple copies of the DLL in different search paths and make future troubleshooting harder.
Do not place the file manually in:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- A random application folder
- A temporary folder
Do not mix a third-party replacement with the official Canon package. Download the complete driver or software installer from Canon instead.

Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that cnhl10a.dll is a self-registering ActiveX or COM component.
Running this command:
regsvr32 cnhl10a.dll
may produce an error stating that the required entry point was not found. It will not reinstall a missing Canon driver or restore a dependent DLL. Use the Canon installer unless its own documentation specifically instructs you to register a component.

A dependency-analysis tool or Process Monitor can show whether the named file is missing or whether Windows cannot find a different DLL that cnhl10a.dll requires. This distinction matters because “specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent.
