Before changing anything, check:
- Which program shows the error: Canon scanning software, Windows Scan, Windows Fax and Scan, or another application.
- When it appears: at startup, when scanning, or when Windows detects the device.
- Your device: record the exact Canon scanner or multifunction-printer model.
- Windows architecture: open Settings → System → About and check System type for 64-bit or 32-bit Windows.
- The complete message: note whether it says
cnhw07a.dll is missing,was not found,Error loading CNHW07A.DLL, or “The specified module could not be found.”

The safest repair is to restore the complete Canon driver package for the connected device rather than downloading the DLL separately.
What cnhw07a.dll does
The file is identified as CNHW07A.DLL, with the description WIA Scanner Driver and publisher CANON INC. It is associated with Canon WIA driver packages and may appear in Windows Driver Store locations used by Canon INF packages.

WIA means Windows Image Acquisition, the Windows interface used by scanners and imaging applications. Canon software can use this driver layer, as can Windows Scan and Windows Fax and Scan. The filename alone cannot identify one specific Canon model, because the same component may be included in packages for different devices.
It may be stored beneath the Driver Store because Windows keeps installed driver packages there. That does not make it a core Microsoft DLL or a file that should be copied into C:WindowsSystem32.

A copy on your computer should still be verified. Right-click the file if you can locate it, select Properties, open Digital Signatures, and check that the signer is Canon. Then right-click it again, choose Scan with Microsoft Defender, and review the result. An unsigned copy, a copy in an unexpected application folder, or a file detected as malicious should not be restored blindly.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon scanner driver
This is the primary fix for a missing, damaged, or unloadable cnhw07a.dll.
1. Identify the device and existing package
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon device and record its complete model name.
- If it is not listed, open Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Canon scanner, multifunction device, or an entry with a warning icon.
Do not choose a driver based only on the DLL filename. Canon uses model-specific packages, and a package for a similar printer or an older Windows release may not contain the correct WIA components.
2. Download the correct Canon package
Go to the official Canon Support site and search for the exact model. Select the installed Windows version and the architecture offered for that device.
Prefer the package Canon identifies as a scanner driver, ScanGear package, MP Driver, or complete device package. If the error began inside a Canon scanning application, download the matching application again as well.
Do not download cnhw07a.dll from a DLL-collection site. An isolated file can be modified, bundled with malware, taken from a different Canon package, or built for the wrong architecture. It also leaves the INF files, services, dependencies, and device registration broken.
3. Remove the damaged installation
- Disconnect the scanner or USB printer if the Canon installer instructs you to do so.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Canon software, the Canon model name, ScanGear, or MP Drivers.
- Uninstall the relevant Canon driver and scanning software.
- Restart Windows.
For a more thorough cleanup:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Select View → Show hidden devices.
- Expand the imaging and printer-related categories.
- Right-click the Canon device and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device or a similar option, select it.
- Confirm the removal and restart the computer.
Do not delete folders manually from C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository. Windows tracks driver packages and their dependencies; deleting a folder can leave the device in an unpredictable state.

- Right-click the Canon installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Reconnect the scanner only when the installer requests it, if applicable.
- Restart Windows after setup completes.
- Open the Canon scanning utility and run a test scan.
- Also test Windows Scan if you use the Windows WIA interface.
The repair worked if the Canon application opens without the DLL message, the device appears under Printers & scanners or Device Manager without a warning icon, and a test scan completes.

If the error remains, confirm that the installer was for the exact model and Windows architecture. A 32-bit-related component and a 64-bit driver package are not interchangeable. Never copy a DLL from another computer or place a 32-bit file in System32 to force the installation.

Fix 2: Restart Windows Image Acquisition
A WIA service problem can look similar to a missing-driver problem. It more commonly produces scanner communication errors, but it is worth checking immediately after reinstalling the package.

- Press Win+R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Check its Status.
- If it is stopped, right-click it and select Start.
- If it is already running, right-click it and select Restart.
- Double-click the service and set Startup type to Automatic if the device requires WIA at startup.
- Restart the scanner and the computer.
- Test the Canon application and Windows Scan.
If Windows Scan works but Canon software still displays cnhw07a.dll, WIA is probably functioning and the Canon application or its private files need repair. If Canon software works but Windows Scan does not, check WIA, device permissions, scanner selection, and Windows privacy settings.
A scanner that is detected but cannot communicate may need a different remedy. Check the USB cable and port, reconnect a network scanner, confirm network discovery, and verify that security software is not blocking the Canon application.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a Canon driver component after detecting a modification or a false positive.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
CNHW07A.DLL, Canon software, or the scanner driver. - Check the reported file path and detection details.
Restore a quarantined file only if it is in the expected Canon driver location, has a valid Canon signature, and you are confident the package came from official Canon Support. Otherwise, leave it quarantined, run a full Microsoft Defender scan, and reinstall the complete Canon package.

Reinstalling is preferable to restoring one file because it replaces the driver’s related files and registration together.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components
Windows component corruption can affect device detection or dependencies, but System File Checker is not a replacement for the Canon driver installer. cnhw07a.dll is a third-party Canon driver component, not a protected Microsoft system file.

Open an elevated terminal:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the scanner.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. SFC may report that it found and repaired Windows files, but that does not prove it replaced cnhw07a.dll. If the error continues, return to the exact Canon driver package rather than repeating SFC indefinitely.

Fix 5: Inspect a stuck Driver Store package
Use this only when Device Manager continues showing an old Canon driver, the installer repeatedly fails, or several stale Canon packages exist.
- Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
pnputil /enum-drivers /files
- Review the output carefully.
- Identify the Canon package by its Provider, Class, Original Name, and device association.
- Record the published name, which normally looks like
oem42.inf. - Remove only the confirmed Canon package:
pnputil /delete-driver oem42.inf /uninstall
Replace oem42.inf with the actual published name shown on your computer. Do not copy the example literally unless it is the package you verified.
Restart Windows, then run the official Canon installer again. If the command says the package is in use, remove the device from Device Manager first or restart and repeat the process. If you cannot positively identify the Canon INF, stop and use the normal Canon uninstall process instead.

Do not copy cnhw07a.dll to System32
This can create an architecture mismatch, bypass the Driver Store, and leave the driver package incomplete. It may also make troubleshooting harder by causing Windows or an application to load the wrong copy.

regsvr32 registers COM or OLE DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A WIA driver component is not automatically a self-registering COM DLL.
Running:
regsvr32 cnhw07a.dll
will normally not repair the Canon installation and may produce an “entry point not found” or similar error. A “specified module could not be found” message can also refer to a dependency of the requested module, not just the named DLL. Use regsvr32 only when the software vendor explicitly documents registration for that particular DLL.
Do not install unrelated runtimes
There is no evidence that this Canon file belongs to Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Installing those redistributables is not the normal repair for cnhw07a.dll.

Windows Features is not a Canon driver repair
Opening Control Panel → Programs → Turn Windows features on or off will not restore this Canon component. Do not enable random legacy features to resolve the message. Use Optional features only when Windows itself specifically identifies a missing Windows feature, not for a Canon WIA package.

When the error still appears
If reinstalling the driver does not help, check these possibilities:
- The application loads an old private copy: reinstall the exact Canon application named in the error, not only the device driver.
- A dependency is missing: “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named DLL is absent.
- Several Canon packages remain installed: remove confirmed stale packages and reinstall once.
- Windows Scan works but Canon software fails: repair the Canon application.
- Canon software works but Windows Scan fails: investigate WIA, permissions, privacy settings, and the selected scanner.
- The device cannot communicate: check cables, USB ports, network discovery, scanner selection, and firewall or security software.
- The problem began after a system change: consider System Restore only if a restore point predates the failure and ordinary driver repair has failed.

Is cnhw07a.dll safe?
It is associated with Canon WIA scanner software, but verify the individual copy’s Canon digital signature and scan it for malware. Location and signature matter more than the filename alone.
