windowsinput.dll is a third-party .NET assembly, not a Windows system file. If Windows says windowsinput.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair the application that owns it rather than copying a random DLL into a Windows folder.
The file belongs to the Windows Input Simulator family of libraries. These libraries provide .NET applications with keyboard and mouse capture or simulation through Windows input APIs. Different applications can bundle different generations or private modifications of the assembly, so the filename alone does not identify the correct replacement.

Fix 1: Identify the application that needs windowsinput.dll
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Start with the erroring program, not the DLL filename.

- Look in that directory for the application executable, plugins folder, or an existing copy of
WindowsInput.dll. - Right-click the executable and select Properties. Check the Details and Digital Signatures tabs.
- If the program came from a launcher, open that launcher’s installed-games or application settings and record the installation path.
Also check the full path shown in the error, if one is provided. A copy inside a game directory, controller utility folder, plugin directory, or normal program installation folder is application-owned. It should not normally be in:

If you cannot identify the owner, search for windowsinput.dll in File Explorer, then inspect each result’s parent folder. The application executable beside the file is usually more useful than the DLL’s generic properties.
Fix 2: Verify or repair the application
Time needed: 5–20 minutes
This is the most likely solution after an update, incomplete extraction, failed installation, disk cleanup, or moving the program.
For an application installed through a launcher
- Open the launcher.
- Select the affected game or application.
- Open its menu, usually shown by a gear, three dots, or Manage button.
- Choose Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, or a similarly named option.
- Wait for the scan and replacement process to finish.
- Restart Windows if the launcher requests it.
- Start the application normally.
A successful repair restores the matching copy of windowsinput.dll to the directory expected by that application.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For a standalone application
- Close the application.
- Open Settings with Windows key + I.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select its three-dot menu and choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair and test the program.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not work, select Reset only if you can recreate the program’s settings.
- If necessary, uninstall the program.
- Download its installer again from the application developer or the program’s official repository.
- Reinstall it to its normal location.
- Start it once using the Windows account that normally runs it.
Do not select a DLL from another program simply because it has the same name. A 1.0.x WindowsInput assembly is not automatically interchangeable with a 6.x assembly or with a private fork bundled by an application.
If the application is old, right-click its executable, select Properties, open Compatibility, and use Run this program as an administrator only when the application requires elevated access or its vendor recommends it. Administrator mode does not repair a missing file by itself.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software may quarantine a library after an application update or after the program is extracted from an archive.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for the affected application directory or
WindowsInput.dll. - Do not restore the file solely because its name looks familiar.
- Restore it only when the application installation is trusted and the file clearly belongs to that installation.
- Run the application’s launcher verification or repair process afterward.
If the security product repeatedly removes the file, stop launching the program and obtain a clean installer from the application developer. Do not disable antivirus just to force an unknown DLL to load.

A repaired installation is preferable to restoring an isolated file because it replaces the complete, matching application set.
Fix 4: Repair the required .NET runtime
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
windowsinput.dll is associated with managed .NET applications. A file can exist but still fail when the required .NET Framework or modern .NET runtime is damaged, missing, blocked, or incompatible.
First check the application’s documentation or installer for its runtime requirement. The WindowsInput package has been published for targets including .NET Framework 4.6.1 or later, .NET Core 3.1, and .NET 6, but that does not mean every application should receive the same runtime or DLL.
Repair .NET Framework
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft .NET Framework.
- If the installed entry provides a Modify or Repair option, select it.
- Follow the repair wizard.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
For an application that specifically requires a Windows feature:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
optionalfeaturesand press Enter. - Review the listed .NET Framework features.
- Enable only the version required by the application.
- Select OK and allow Windows to apply the change.
- Restart the computer if prompted.
Do not install Visual C++ or DirectX packages automatically for this error. Those runtimes are relevant only when the application identifies them as missing dependencies.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
Use these commands when Windows has broader symptoms, such as multiple built-in applications failing, damaged system features, or update-related corruption. SFC and DISM are not the normal way to restore an application-owned windowsinput.dll.
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete. Do not close the window if progress pauses.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the original application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, restart and run it again after DISM completes, then check the application installation separately.

Outbyte PC Repair can scan for repair issues and shows what it finds; applying repairs requires the full version, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix when the DLL belongs to that program.
Fix 6: Reinstall a related input or controller driver only when indicated
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
A driver reinstall is relevant only when the failing program is a controller utility, remapping tool, or other input application and its own device driver is also malfunctioning. A driver does not replace the WindowsInput .NET assembly.
- Disconnect the affected controller or input device.
- Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Expand the category containing the device, such as Human Interface Devices, Keyboards, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for a device error.
- If the application vendor instructs you to reinstall it, right-click the device and select Uninstall device.
- Reconnect the device or restart Windows.
- Install the driver supplied by the device or application vendor.
- Repair or reinstall the parent application as well.
When several devices are involved, manually identifying the correct driver and checking versions can be tedious. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identifies what needs attention; driver installation requires the full version, and it will not substitute for repairing an application-owned windowsinput.dll.
Fix 7: Check whether the file is present but unusable
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
A “specified module could not be found” message can mean that the DLL itself is missing or that another dependency failed while Windows tried to load it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Confirm whether
WindowsInput.dllorwindowsinput.dllis present. - Right-click the file and select Properties.
- On the General tab, look for an Unblock checkbox. If the file came from a trusted official installer and is blocked, select Unblock, then Apply.
- Check the Details tab for version information, but treat it as an investigation clue rather than a universal standard.
- Compare the file’s directory with the executable that reports the error.
- Check the application’s logs or Windows Event Viewer for a named missing dependency.
To open Event Viewer:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs, then Application.
- Look for an error at the time the program failed.
- Record the application name, faulting module, and any runtime or dependency message.
If the file exists in another program’s folder, do not copy it over. The application may require a particular assembly version, namespace, public key, or API surface. Repair the original installation or install the exact dependency declared by the application developer.
Why 32-bit and 64-bit downloads are the wrong approach
windowsinput.dll is primarily a managed .NET assembly, not a standard native x86 or x64 runtime DLL. The consuming application, its .NET runtime, and the specific assembly build determine compatibility.
Windows 11 or Windows 10 being 64-bit does not tell you which copy to use. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, and two applications on the same computer can use different private WindowsInput assemblies without sharing one system copy.
Restore the file from the exact application installer. Do not choose a random “32-bit” or “64-bit” download based on the Windows edition.
Why regsvr32 usually does not fix it
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose the COM registration entry point. A normal .NET class library is loaded by the application and .NET runtime; it is not normally registered as a COM in-process server.
Running this command:
regsvr32 windowsinput.dll
will commonly produce an error stating that the DllRegisterServer entry point was not found. That result does not prove the file is missing.
Use regsvr32 only when the application developer explicitly identifies this particular file as a COM DLL and supplies registration instructions. Otherwise, repair the parent application.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThat approach can provide:
- the wrong WindowsInput generation;
- an incompatible architecture or runtime target;
- a modified or malicious binary;
- a file with incompatible dependencies;
- a version conflict that hides the original installation problem.
The safe sources are the affected application’s official installer, its official launcher repair process, or the project/package dependency declared by its developer. Developers should restore the project’s declared WindowsInput or original InputSimulator package rather than copying a DLL from another application.
Causes to consider after the main fixes
The usual causes are an incomplete application installation or update, antivirus quarantine, a mismatched WindowsInput generation, a damaged .NET runtime, or a corrupted application directory. Less commonly, malware, disk errors, a damaged Windows profile, or a failed extraction can be involved.
System Restore is appropriate only when the application worked before a known system change and other repairs have failed:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstruiand press Enter. - Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review affected programs.
- Select Next, then Finish.
If every reinstall fails, collect the full error text, application path, application version, Windows version, file properties, antivirus history, and the event immediately preceding the failure. Give those details to the application vendor.

FAQ
Is windowsinput.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with third-party Windows Input libraries and should not normally be installed in System32 or SysWOW64.
Which application installed it?
The filename cannot answer that. Check the erroring executable’s folder, installed-program location, launcher records, file properties, and antivirus quarantine history.
Can I use the same DLL from another program?
No. Multiple generations and forks use the same assembly name. Restore the copy shipped with the affected application.
What if the file is already there?
Check for a dependency failure, blocked file, corrupted installation, duplicate assembly, wrong application version, or mismatched fork. The loader message can refer to a dependency rather than the named file itself.
Should I install WindowsInput 6.4.1?
Not automatically. That is a package version, not a universal replacement for every application. Install the version declared or bundled by the affected program.
Will SFC or DISM restore it?
Usually not. They repair protected Windows components, while windowsinput.dll is normally owned by an application.
Do I need to reinstall a controller driver?
Only if the controller utility reports a separate driver or device failure. Driver reinstallation does not replace the WindowsInput assembly.
