ncryptsslp.dll Missing: Repair Windows Before the App Starts

By VGSources Team 9 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ncryptsslp.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows security component, not a Visual C++ Redistributable, DirectX file, .NET file, or ordinary game DLL. When Windows says ncryptsslp.dll is missing, not found, corrupt, or cannot be loaded, repair Windows first, then repair the specific program that triggered the message.

Identify the file and the likely failure

Windows reports this file with messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because ncryptsslp.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because ncryptsslp.dll was not found.”
  • “Error loading ncryptsslp.dll.”
  • “Failed to load ncryptsslp.dll.”
  • “ncryptsslp.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
  • “The specified module could not be found.”

The last message does not always mean that ncryptsslp.dll itself is absent. Windows may be reporting a missing or damaged dependency required by the DLL.

ncryptsslp.dll is associated with Microsoft Cryptography Next Generation and Schannel, the Windows security provider used for cryptographic and TLS/SSL operations. Microsoft security documentation identifies it among Windows system files and describes Schannel as part of Windows security infrastructure. See Microsoft’s TLS/SSL and Schannel overview.

64-bit location %WINDIR%System32
32-bit location on 64-bit Windows %WINDIR%SysWOW64
Correct source Windows servicing, Windows Update, or matching installation media

The folder names are counterintuitive. On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 normally contains 32-bit redirected files. Microsoft explains this behavior in its File System Redirector documentation.

Observed Windows file inventories include several build-specific versions, including 64-bit versions from Windows 10-era builds and both 32-bit and 64-bit variants. These are not universal replacement versions. The correct file depends on your Windows edition, build, servicing state, language, and architecture.

Fix 1: Repair Windows automatically with DISM and SFC

This is the best first step when more than one program fails, the error names C:WindowsSystem32, or the problem started after Windows Update, an interrupted shutdown, disk cleanup, malware removal, antivirus quarantine, or broader system instability.

Run DISM

  1. Press Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Leave the elevated window open.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. That store can then provide the correct repair files for SFC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run System File Checker

In the same administrator window, run:

sfc /scannow

Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then interpret the result:

  • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: Windows did not detect protected-file corruption. Continue with the application and dependency checks below.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: Restart Windows and test the affected program.
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: Continue with the DISM repair-source steps later in this guide.
  • Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation: Restart into Safe Mode or Windows Recovery Environment and repeat the repair.

Restart even if the commands report success. Then launch the program again.

Repeating SFC without knowing what changed can make troubleshooting circular. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the condition and show what needs attention, while its repair is performed by the full version; it is optional, and Windows DISM/SFC remain the correct built-in path.

Fix 2: Check Windows Update and repair a failed update

A partial update, forced shutdown, or interrupted restart can leave system components mismatched.

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. Install all available updates.
  4. Restart when Windows requests it.
  5. Check for updates again after restarting.
  6. Test the affected application.

On Windows 11, Microsoft also provides a repair reinstall:

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Recovery.
  2. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  3. Select Reinstall now.
  4. Follow the prompts.

This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.

If the error began immediately after a particular update, remove that update only as a recovery step:

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
  2. Select Uninstall updates.
  3. Choose the recent update associated with the failure.
  4. Select Uninstall, if Windows allows it.
  5. Restart and test.

If normal Windows cannot start correctly, use Windows Recovery Environment and select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options explain which recovery choices preserve personal files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine

Security software may quarantine a damaged file, or it may incorrectly identify a Windows component.

In Windows Security:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections involving ncryptsslp.dll.
  6. Check the reported path, detection name, and action taken.

Do not restore the file automatically. Restore or allow it only when the location is a normal Windows directory, the file is identified as a Microsoft component, and you have investigated the detection. Microsoft documents these controls in Protection history.

If the file is quarantined again:

  1. Update Defender or your antivirus product.
  2. Run a Full scan.
  3. If needed, run Microsoft Defender Offline scan from Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
  4. Contact Microsoft or the antivirus vendor if a legitimate Windows file continues to be detected.

Do not permanently disable protection to make the program start.

Fix 4: Determine whether one application or all applications fail

The scope of the error changes the repair path.

If only one program fails

The application may be damaged, even when the message names a Windows DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the affected program.
  3. Select the three-dot menu.
  4. Choose Advanced options, if available.
  5. Select Repair.
  6. Test the program.
  7. If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the program’s local settings or data.

For a desktop application without those options, uninstall it from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer. For a game, use the launcher’s Repair, Verify, or Verify integrity command before reinstalling the whole game.

If the application installer itself fails, download a fresh installer from the application developer rather than copying ncryptsslp.dll into its folder.

If many programs fail

Return to DISM and SFC, then inspect Windows Update and Defender Protection History. A system-wide failure is unlikely to be fixed by reinstalling one game or by installing a runtime package.

Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility

A 64-bit program normally uses the native Windows copy in:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
%WINDIR%System32

A 32-bit program running on 64-bit Windows normally uses the redirected 32-bit copy in:

%WINDIR%SysWOW64

Do not move files between these folders. Windows’ WOW64 redirection normally selects the correct architecture automatically. A wrong-architecture replacement can cause “bad image,” entry-point, or load errors.

To check an application’s architecture, use its official documentation or inspect its installation location and installer requirements. The DLL name alone cannot identify whether the launching executable is 32-bit or 64-bit.

If the file exists but the error remains, the issue may be a damaged dependency or an incompatible application installation. Repair Windows and the application instead of replacing the visible DLL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 6: Use a matching DISM repair source

If DISM reports that source files could not be found, use Windows installation media that matches the installed edition, language, and architecture.

Microsoft’s documented pattern is:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to the matching Windows repair source.

After DISM completes, run:

sfc /scannow

Restart and test again. If SFC still cannot repair files, review the CBS log or proceed to an in-place Windows repair using matching installation media. Do not substitute a DLL downloaded from another Windows installation.

Fix 7: Restore Windows to an earlier state

Use System Restore when the error began after a recent driver, update, cleanup operation, or software installation and a suitable restore point exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the problem.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Confirm the restore.

System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs but normally does not remove personal files. It is not guaranteed to repair every DLL problem.

Fix 8: Update or reinstall related drivers only when evidence points there

Drivers are not the normal source of ncryptsslp.dll, but a broader system or network failure may justify checking them.

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Network adapters, Display adapters, and any category showing a warning icon.
  3. Right-click the relevant device and select Properties.
  4. Open the Driver tab.
  5. Note the provider and version.
  6. Use Update driver > Search automatically for drivers, or install a current driver from the hardware manufacturer.
  7. Restart Windows.

Outbyte Driver Updater can show which of many installed drivers are stale, while driver installation through the full version handles the update; it is optional and does not replace Windows repair or the affected program’s official reinstall.

What not to do

Do not download ncryptsslp.dll from a DLL website

Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible Windows build, or a modified file without a trustworthy signature. Copying the file may also hide the real cause, such as component-store corruption or a missing dependency.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching Windows installation media, Defender, and the affected application’s official installer instead.

Do not copy the file from another computer

Even two computers running Windows 10 or Windows 11 may have different builds, languages, servicing levels, and architectures. A file that works on one system is not a general-purpose replacement.

Do not delete the existing file

Windows protects system files for a reason. Deleting ncryptsslp.dll can turn a recoverable corruption problem into a larger Windows outage.

Do not run regsvr32

regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. ncryptsslp.dll is a Windows cryptographic provider, not a typical COM server. Registering it will not repair a missing or corrupt system component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to use Windows installation repair

Escalate to an in-place repair when:

  • DISM cannot repair the component store.
  • SFC repeatedly reports unrepaired files.
  • The file becomes corrupt again after reboot.
  • Multiple unrelated Windows programs fail.
  • Windows Update itself is damaged.
  • Malware or disk errors may have affected system files.

Back up important files first. Use matching Windows installation media and choose the option that preserves apps and personal files when available. A reset or clean installation is a last resort.

Information to collect if the error persists

Record these details before seeking support:

  • The exact error text.
  • The executable or application that fails.
  • Whether one program or many programs fail.
  • Your Windows edition, version, build, and system architecture.
  • The full path named in the error.
  • Whether ncryptsslp.dll exists in System32 or SysWOW64.
  • The final DISM result.
  • The final SFC result.
  • Relevant entries from Defender Protection history.
  • Whether the problem started after an update, shutdown, cleanup, quarantine event, or application installation.

FAQ

Is ncryptsslp.dll part of Visual C++?

No. It is a Microsoft Windows security component associated with Schannel and CNG functionality. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the primary fix.

Should I install Windows Features?

Usually not. Windows Features can enable optional components, but they do not replace a missing or corrupt ncryptsslp.dll. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC first.

Why does the error mention a program if the file belongs to Windows?

The program is the caller. It requested a Windows security component and failed when Windows could not load the file or one of its dependencies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does the file exist but Windows still say it is missing?

The file may be corrupt, the wrong architecture, blocked by security software, or dependent on another missing component. “The specified module could not be found” can refer to that dependency.

Is reinstalling the affected app still useful?

Yes, when only one program fails. Repair or reinstall that program from its official installer after checking Windows health. If many programs fail, prioritize Windows repair instead.
