Windows Image Acquisition, or WIA, is Microsoft’s architecture for allowing scanners and cameras to communicate with Windows applications. Microsoft supplies the WIA framework, while the hardware manufacturer supplies the device-specific driver components.

cnhw08a.dll belongs to that Canon-specific layer. It is associated with the Canon WIA Scanner Driver and may be loaded by a Canon scanning utility, a WIA service process, or software that detects the scanner.

The filename does not identify one specific scanner model. Several Canon product families may have used related WIA packages, and an older driver may have been installed through a DriverStore location rather than directly into an application folder.
It is not normally a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, game component, or general-purpose Microsoft DLL.
What the error messages mean
Representative Windows loader messages include:
- “The program can’t start because cnhw08a.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting cnhw08a.dll.”
- “Error loading cnhw08a.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because cnhw08a.dll was not found.”
- “cnhw08a.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages usually mean that a Canon scanning component tried to load the DLL and failed. The cause may be a deleted file, an incomplete Canon installation, an incompatible legacy driver, a missing dependency, or a damaged WIA setup.

First, identify the Canon device
Do this before downloading or removing anything.
- Connect the scanner or multifunction printer.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, and Printers.
- Record the exact Canon model name.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for entries such as IJ Scan Utility, ScanGear, MF Scan Utility, MF Drivers, or a Canon scanner package.
- Note whether you are running Windows 10 or Windows 11 and whether Windows is 64-bit.
To check the architecture, open Settings > System > About and read System type. Do not assume that a 64-bit Windows installation requires every scanner component to be 64-bit. Older Canon scanning utilities and drivers can contain 32-bit components and still work on 64-bit Windows.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete Canon driver package
This is the most likely and most reliable repair.
- Open Canon’s official support portal in your browser.
- Search for the exact scanner or printer model.
- Select your Windows version and architecture when Canon provides those choices.
- Open the Drivers or Software section.
- Download the complete scanner, multifunction, or MF driver package. Do not search for
cnhw08a.dllas a standalone download. - If Canon provides an uninstall utility, run it first.
- Otherwise, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the Canon scanning software, choose Uninstall, and follow the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Canon installer as an administrator.
- Connect the scanner by USB only when the installer requests it. For a network scanner, follow the installer’s discovery and network setup steps.
- Restart again if the installer requests it.
Test the result with Windows Scan, Windows Fax and Scan, IJ Scan Utility, MF Scan Utility, or the scanning application documented for the model.
The repair worked if the scanner appears without a warning icon in Device Manager, the Canon utility detects it, and a preview or test scan completes. If the same error returns, uninstalling and reinstalling the same old package may not be enough. Check Canon’s support page for a newer driver, compatibility update, or model-specific scanning patch.

- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, and Printers.
- Look for the Canon device, a yellow warning triangle, or an Unknown device.
- Right-click the relevant entry and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- If the device is clearly the Canon scanner, select Uninstall Device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you intend to reinstall the complete Canon package.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the model-specific Canon driver again.
Do not delete random files from C:WindowsSystem32 or the DriverStore. DriverStore files are managed by Windows, and removing individual files can damage unrelated device installations.
If the scanner worked before a recent driver or Windows change, open Settings > System > Recovery > Open System Restore and choose an appropriate restore point. System Restore is most useful when the timing is clear and a suitable restore point exists.
Fix 3: Confirm that the WIA service is running
The Canon DLL can be present while the Windows service that coordinates imaging devices is stopped.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.mscand press Enter. - Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic or Automatic (Delayed Start) if appropriate for the installation.
- If the service is stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart the Canon scanning application.
If WIA refuses to start, note the exact error. A service failure, damaged Windows component, incompatible driver, or dependency problem may be involved. This is not fixed by copying another cnhw08a.dll into a Windows folder.
Also check the scanner connection. For USB devices, try another cable or port without using an unpowered hub. For network scanners, confirm that the device and PC are on the expected network and that Canon’s discovery utility can see the device.
Fix 4: Install Windows updates
Microsoft updates can repair Windows imaging components and improve compatibility with older drivers.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the scanner again.
Windows Update does not guarantee that it will supply the correct Canon WIA package. Use it as a supporting repair, not as a replacement for the model-specific Canon installer.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when WIA, Windows scanning applications, or other Windows components appear damaged. They are less likely to restore cnhw08a.dll itself because that file is supplied by Canon.

- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the scanner.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command should be presented as a guaranteed way to recreate a Canon driver file.

Windows Security or another antivirus product may have quarantined a damaged or suspicious copy.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
cnhw08a.dllor Canon software. - Do not restore it solely because the filename looks familiar.
- First reinstall the Canon package from the official Canon support portal.
- Verify that the restored installation is digitally signed by Canon where applicable.
- Run a current antivirus scan.
- If the alert remains, run a Full scan or Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
The filename alone cannot prove that a file is safe. A malicious program can use a familiar name, and a legitimate file can become damaged or be replaced.

Do not download cnhw08a.dll from a random DLL website. A loose file can contain malware, use the wrong architecture, come from an unrelated Canon driver version, or fail because another dependency is missing.
Do not copy the file from another computer or another Windows installation. Even if the filename matches, the model, package revision, dependencies, signature, and installation path may differ.

regsvr32 is also not a generic solution. WIA minidrivers are installed through the device driver’s INF package, where the vendor component is identified and loaded by the WIA service. A WIA DLL may not export the DllRegisterServer function required by regsvr32.
Running this command blindly:
regsvr32 cnhw08a.dll
can therefore produce an error such as “The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.” It may also register the wrong copy if you have placed an unrelated DLL in the current directory. Use the Canon installer instead.
If the file exists but Windows still cannot load it
Check these possibilities:
- A dependent DLL is missing.
- The Canon package is for a different model.
- A 32-bit application is being given an incompatible 64-bit component, or vice versa.
- The file is in the wrong application or driver path.
- The file is damaged or unsigned.
- Windows upgraded and the old Canon driver is no longer compatible.
- Antivirus software removed another component from the package.
The System32 name does not prove that a file is 64-bit. It is the normal Windows directory name even on 64-bit Windows. Avoid manually moving files between System32, SysWOW64, application folders, and DriverStore.

If Canon no longer supports the scanner
Some older scanners and multifunction printers have no driver compatible with the current Windows release. In that case:

- Install that package only if it matches your Windows version.
- Check whether the model supports a compatible TWAIN or WIA driver.
- Test Windows Scan and the Canon utility separately.
- Check Device Manager for a working device entry and the WIA service for a running state.
- Consider replacement hardware if no supported driver can communicate with the scanner.
A persistent cnhw08a.dll error can therefore indicate an unsupported legacy driver rather than a missing file that can be repaired in isolation.
