xrwpusd.dll is missing from your computer, or Windows reports that it was not found, could not be loaded, or is a Bad Image. xrwpusd.dll is normally a legacy Xerox WorkCentre/Pro Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) scanner-driver component, not a game DLL or ordinary Windows runtime.
Which fix applies to you
Use the situation that matches what you see:
- The error appears when scanning or connecting a Xerox multifunction printer: reinstall the exact Xerox model’s print and scan driver.
- The error appeared after Windows Update, a driver change, or security software cleanup: check Windows Security Protection history, then reinstall the driver.
- The Xerox device is still listed but does not work: remove it in Device Manager and let Windows reinstall or rediscover it.
- The Xerox device was retired years ago: remove the obsolete Xerox software, device entry, and startup reference instead of copying the DLL.
- The error says “Bad Image”: suspect an incompatible architecture or damaged driver package.
- Several Windows files are failing, not just Xerox scanning: repair Windows components with DISM and SFC.
Do not start by downloading xrwpusd.dll from a DLL archive. The file belongs to a driver package, and replacing only one DLL can leave the INF, catalog, dependencies, and device registration broken.

What xrwpusd.dll actually is
Public file records identify the module as part of the Xerox WorkCentre/Pro WIA scanner driver. Its reported metadata identifies Xerox Corporation, the Xerox WorkCentre product, the original filename XWCWIADR.DLL, and version 4.33.07.04. It is associated with the wiaxx002.inf driver package and may be stored inside Windows DriverStore.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
WIA is Windows’ imaging architecture for scanners and cameras. A vendor supplies a WIA driver module and installs it through an INF-based driver package. That means xrwpusd.dll may exist under a Windows system-managed location, but it is still a Xerox-authored component rather than a core Windows API file.

Some indexed packages contain 32-bit PE files, while other records show architecture-specific variants. Do not assume that every copy is 32-bit. Your Windows architecture and the Xerox package must match.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Xerox driver
This is the most direct repair when the Xerox scanner is still in use.
- Identify the exact model from the printer’s front panel, label, or Windows device entry. “WorkCentre Pro” is not specific enough.
- Open the official Xerox Support website manually.
- Search for the full model name.
- Select your Windows version and system architecture.
- Download the model-specific print and scan, WIA, or multifunction driver package.
- If the installer offers a repair or remove option, remove the damaged installation first.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Xerox installer as administrator. Right-click it, select Show more options, then select Run as administrator.
- Reconnect or power on the Xerox device when the installer requests it.
- Restart again after installation.
Test the repair by opening Windows Scan, Windows Fax and Scan, or the Xerox scanning utility. Select the Xerox device and perform a preview scan.
If the installer does not list your exact Windows version, do not substitute a package for a different WorkCentre model. Xerox’s older WorkCentre Pro models may have no supported driver for Windows 10 or Windows 11. In that case, use a supported Xerox driver, a compatible older Windows installation, or replace the obsolete scanner.
Fix 2: Remove and reinstall the device in Device Manager
This rebuilds the device association and can remove a partially installed WIA package.
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, Print queues, and Other devices.
- Find the Xerox device or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click it and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows shows Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you intend to remove the old Xerox package completely.
- Select Uninstall.
- Disconnect the Xerox device, restart Windows, then reconnect it.
- In Device Manager, select Action > Scan for hardware changes.
Microsoft’s driver guidance is available in its Device Manager driver instructions.
If Windows installs only printing but not scanning, install the complete scan or WIA package from Xerox. A printer-only driver does not necessarily provide the scanner component.

When manually hunting through model pages and comparing old packages, it is easy to install the wrong revision or miss another stale device driver. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated driver entries and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while driver installation and repair require the full version. The exact Xerox model-specific package remains the definitive fix for this file.
Fix 3: Check Windows Update
Windows Update may provide an inbox or optional driver for the Xerox hardware.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
- Return to Windows Update and select Advanced options.
- Open Optional updates if it is available.
- Expand Driver updates and install a Xerox-related driver.
- Restart and test scanning again.
Microsoft documents the process in its Windows Update instructions.
Windows Update cannot create support for every legacy WorkCentre model. If no compatible driver appears, return to the exact-model Xerox installation path rather than forcing a generic DLL into the system.
Fix 4: Inspect the DriverStore with PnPUtil
Use PnPUtil to see whether Windows still has a Xerox package installed.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
pnputil /enum-drivers /files
- Search the output for Xerox, WorkCentre, WIA, or
wiaxx002.inf. - To make Windows rescan connected hardware, run:
pnputil /scan-devices
Microsoft’s PnPUtil command reference explains the available driver-store operations.
Do not delete a package merely because its filename contains xrwpusd.dll. First confirm that it belongs to the unused or damaged Xerox device. Removing the wrong package can disable another device.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a driver module after an update or scan.

- ONE TOUCH SCANNING: Desktop scanners make it easy for users to quickly scan to the “destination” of their choice by pressing a single button, eliminating the multiple steps usually required to save scanned documents in popular file formats
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a quarantined Xerox file or driver package.
- Confirm the detected path and publisher before taking action.
Only restore the file if it came from a trusted, digitally signed Xerox driver package and the Xerox device is still required. Microsoft explains these decisions in its Protection History guidance.
If the file was removed from a legitimate package, reinstall the complete Xerox driver instead of restoring an isolated DLL. If the detection is suspicious, leave it quarantined and run a full Defender scan.
Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
DISM and SFC are appropriate when DriverStore or broader Windows components appear damaged. They are not a substitute for reinstalling a missing Xerox package.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after both commands finish.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command is guaranteed to restore a vendor DLL that was removed from its Xerox driver package. Follow Microsoft’s DISM and SFC instructions if either command reports an error.
Recommended Free Tools
If you repeatedly run these commands without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing Windows problems to investigate; its free scan identifies issues, while repair requires the full version. Reinstalling the Xerox program remains the definitive fix when only its WIA component is missing.
Fix 7: Check architecture and Bad Image errors
A Bad Image message often means Windows tried to load a binary that is damaged or incompatible with the process.
Check your Windows architecture:
- Open Start > Settings > System > About.
- Look at System type.
- Note whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Download the matching Xerox driver package.
Never place a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit driver package directory, or copy a file from another computer. A file with the same name can belong to another package revision, operating system, or architecture.
The status code may vary. 0xC000007B is associated with an invalid image format, but the message alone does not prove that this exact code is involved.

Do not register or copy the DLL manually
Do not use this as a default repair:
regsvr32 xrwpusd.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. WIA components are installed through INF and driver-package mechanisms, not normally by manually registering one file. See Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation and its explanation of DllRegisterServer.
Likewise, do not copy xrwpusd.dll from another PC or a random download page. The replacement may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, fail catalog validation, or omit the rest of the driver package. Reinstall the complete driver from Xerox or let Windows supply a compatible package.
Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not a logical first fix. xrwpusd.dll is a Xerox WIA module, not one of those runtime components.
Fix 8: Remove a stale Xerox reference
If the WorkCentre was removed long ago, the error may come from an old scan utility, startup entry, or device registration.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Xerox software.
- Uninstall software associated with the retired device.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove the unused Xerox device in Device Manager.
- Check Task Manager > Startup apps for an old Xerox utility and disable it if its software has already been removed.
If the message appears during login but no Xerox hardware is connected, a stale reference is more likely than a currently missing driver. Do not reinstall the old driver unless you still need the device.
Use System Restore after a recent change
If scanning worked until a driver update, Windows update, or software installation, System Restore may undo the change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the error began.
- Review affected programs.
- Complete the restore and restart.
Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains what the process changes. System Restore does not make an unsupported WorkCentre compatible with Windows 11.

Frequently asked questions
Is xrwpusd.dll a Windows system file?
It may be stored in Windows DriverStore, but it is a Xerox-authored WIA scanner component installed as part of a driver package. It is not a general-purpose Windows runtime.
What program uses xrwpusd.dll?
Usually a Xerox WorkCentre or WorkCentre Pro scanner, multifunction device, WIA scan utility, or stale Xerox device registration. No specific game or application should be assumed from the filename alone.
Can I download xrwpusd.dll by itself?
That is unsafe and usually incomplete. Use the exact Xerox model-support package or Windows Update instead.
Should I install a Visual C++ Redistributable?
Not as the first response. This file is associated with Xerox WIA scanning, not the Visual C++ runtime.
Why does printing work while scanning fails?
Printing and scanning often use separate driver components. A print driver can remain functional while the WIA scanner package is damaged or missing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat if the Xerox model has no Windows 10 or Windows 11 driver?
Treat the device as legacy hardware. Use a supported driver and operating system if available, or replace the scanner. A copied DLL cannot create driver support that the vendor does not provide.
What information should I record if the error remains?
Record the exact error text, executable name, full path shown for the DLL, Windows version and architecture, Xerox model, Device Manager status, and any Event Viewer error code. That information distinguishes a missing package from a stale reference or incompatible driver.
