Code Vein Reviews: Is Its Build Freedom Worth the Uneven Challenge?

Code Vein’s flexible builds and partner support stand out, while reviews flag uneven challenge, repetitive environments, and obscure systems.

Code Vein is at its best when you experiment: its Blood Codes let you change combat roles, and you can mix mastered Gifts instead of being locked into one class. Reviews also point to weaker enemy and boss encounters, repetitive-looking environments, and uneven polish. Whether it clicks depends less on its “Souls-like” label than on how much you value build flexibility and partner support.

What is Code Vein?

Code Vein is a 2019 action RPG from Bandai Namco Studios, described by the studio as a “dramatic exploration ARPG.” It is set in a ruined world where Revenants search for their past while resisting transformation into Lost. The publisher’s official game page presents dungeon exploration, combat, customization, and story as its core elements.

That premise gives the adventure a clear identity, but the reviews’ strongest praise is more about how the systems let you shape your character than about the story alone.

Why reviewers praise its build system

Blood Codes act as changeable combat roles. They work alongside weapons, Blood Veils, and Gifts—special abilities that can affect combat in different ways. The official page says you can switch builds at any time, so trying another approach is part of the intended play rather than a permanent class choice.

  • POWERFUL PARTNER CHARACTERS - Explore the world with trusted and powerful allies who can fight alongside you or enhance your abilities. Each partner brings unique abilities and deep connections that shape your journey.

PCGamesN’s Jason Coles praised the detailed character creator and the ability to change Blood Codes and combine mastered Gifts. GameSpot’s Richard Wakeling likewise highlighted Blood Codes and Gifts, along with satisfying feedback from melee combat. The trade-off is complexity: Coles found parts of the system obscure, so players who prefer a simple, immediately legible progression system may find the menus and interactions harder to parse.

How partners change the experience

You can explore with AI partners, whose fighting styles and storylines differ, or play online co-op with friends. A partner can make combat more manageable, but that assistance affects the challenge: PCGamesN noted that some enemies felt too easy when accompanied by a capable ally.

This is an important part of the game’s character, not just an optional convenience. If you want a solo action RPG that consistently tests you through difficult encounters, partner support may blunt the pressure. If you enjoy having backup or playing cooperatively, it is a meaningful option.

Where the reviews find weaknesses

GameSpot scored Code Vein 6/10 (“Fair”) in Richard Wakeling’s October 3, 2019 review. He praised build flexibility, melee feedback, and exploration, but criticized relatively static enemies, forgettable bosses, and visually repetitive environments. Wakeling reported finishing his playthrough in around 23 hours; that is his own reported run, not a general completion-time estimate.

PCGamesN’s Jason Coles gave the game 7/10 in a review updated October 7, 2019. Alongside its customization strengths, he pointed to system complexity, enemies that could become too easy with an ally, and a lack of polish compared with the genre’s best. Together, the reviews suggest a game with appealing combat and character-building ideas whose encounters and presentation do not always match those ambitions.

How the review scores compare

Source Score What the score captures
GameSpot, Richard Wakeling, October 3, 2019 6/10 (“Fair”) Praised build freedom, melee feedback, and exploration; criticized enemy challenge, bosses, and environmental repetition.
PCGamesN, Jason Coles, review updated October 7, 2019 7/10 Praised character creation and class-building freedom; noted obscure systems, uneven challenge with an ally, and lack of polish.
Metacritic, PlayStation 4 critic page, accessed 2026 70 Metascore (“Mixed or Average”) A dynamic aggregate snapshot; its score and review distribution can change.

The scores are not contradictory so much as different emphases on the same trade-off: a flexible, distinctive build system sits beside less consistent encounters and polish. Metacritic’s number is a time-sensitive PS4 snapshot, not a permanent or platform-wide verdict.

Who is likely to enjoy Code Vein?

  • Try it if: you like changing roles, testing combinations of abilities, and having a partner option during exploration and combat.
  • Think twice if: your priority is consistently demanding bosses, highly varied environments, or systems that explain themselves with little menu-digging.
  • Consider how you want to play: AI partners and online co-op are supported, and their assistance can make some encounters easier.
