Command & Conquer Remastered Collection is a well-regarded, generous restoration of two landmark PC strategy games, but critics agree that updated presentation does not erase their old-school friction. Metacritic currently lists an 82 Metascore from 58 critic reviews, with 48 positive, 10 mixed and no negative reviews; its label is “Generally Favorable.” The score is an aggregator snapshot checked October 8, 2026, not a user rating or a guarantee that every critic loved it.
What do critics think of Command & Conquer Remastered Collection?
The consensus is that this is a strong, preservation-minded remaster and an unusually substantial package. Critics value how it makes Command & Conquer and Red Alert easier to revisit while keeping the character of the originals. The reservations are just as consistent: their interfaces and mission logic can feel dated, and difficulty can be punishing.
Metacritic’s current PC listing gives the collection an 82 Metascore based on 58 critic reviews: 48 positive (83%), 10 mixed (17%) and zero negative. Those are critic classifications, not player scores, and the tally can change as the aggregator updates its page. Metacritic lists the PC release date as June 5, 2020. VG247’s review, dated June 5, 2020, calls it “a winner” and “a stellar package,” while also warning that “the old-fashioned, less friendly design in places will mean this one isn’t quite for everyone.” That pairing captures the broader critical response: appreciation for the work of restoration, with no claim that the games have become modern in every respect. Both excerpts are reproduced on Metacritic’s listing.

What is included in the collection?
The PC collection, published by Electronic Arts and developed by Petroglyph, remasters Command & Conquer and Red Alert along with all three expansions. It also includes rebuilt multiplayer, a modernized interface, a map editor, bonus footage and gallery material, and remastered music. PC Gamer additionally notes re-recorded music by Frank Klepacki, mod support, custom multiplayer lobbies, updated controls and extra missions that had previously been available in console versions. PC Gamer’s overview of the series and collection discusses several of those additions.
The appeal is not only visual polish. These extras make the collection a broad way to return to the two games and their expansions, while the campaign missions and scenarios remain recognizably those of the original releases.
Why did critics like the remaster?
It preserves the games’ identity
Reviewers praised the balance between cleaner presentation and fidelity to the source. The remaster makes the old and updated visuals easy to distinguish, while retaining the brisk campaigns and distinctive mission scenarios that give the games their personality. PC Gamer’s Rick Lane argues that varied missions and campaign branches help keep the experience engaging even though the underlying systems are old. Read PC Gamer’s review.
It is a substantial package, not just a graphical refresh
Both main games, all three expansions and a range of archival and modernized features give the release real breadth. Updated controls and interface elements, multiplayer features and mod support make it more convenient to revisit than an untouched re-release, while the music and bonus materials help preserve the series’ history.

Its historical importance is part of the appeal
God is a Geek’s review, dated June 26, 2020 and quoted on Metacritic, puts the collection in context: “By modern standards, the Command & Conquer Remastered Collection is far from perfect, but without these games, modern standards wouldn’t exist”. The point is not that age makes every rough edge enjoyable; rather, the package gives players a chance to experience influential games whose conventions helped shape later real-time strategy titles.
What are the main criticisms?
Modernized presentation does not mean modernized design
The collection improves comfort and clarity, but critics still encounter fiddly unit selection and inconsistent pathfinding. Some objectives ask players to destroy every building, which can turn a mission into a slow search rather than a decisive battle. These are characteristics of the original design that the remaster does not fully solve.
Campaign difficulty can spike
PC Gamer describes uneven difficulty, including missions that can be punishing. Playing on Easy is an option for people more interested in seeing the campaigns than testing themselves against their steepest challenges. Even with that option, players should expect older mission pacing and rules rather than a campaign rebuilt around contemporary conveniences.
The originals’ presentation may not work for everyone
Some mixed reviews on Metacritic say the collection is most appealing to people already receptive to the originals; others point to dated graphics and cinematics as well as demanding play. The favorable aggregate therefore reflects a strong overall reception, not unanimous enthusiasm or proof that the remaster removes every barrier for newcomers.

Is Command & Conquer Remastered Collection worth it?
Critics’ verdict points to a good fit for returning fans, players curious about RTS history, and anyone who values a carefully assembled archive as much as a modernized game. The two remasters retain their recognizable pacing and mission design, while the expansions and extras make this more than a minimal reissue.
It is a less certain fit if you want forgiving pathfinding, consistently smooth unit control or campaign missions designed around current genre conventions. The key trade-off is clear: strong preservation and a lot to play, alongside old-fashioned systems and difficulty that remain part of the experience.
How well has the collection aged?
Its campaigns still have qualities critics found compelling: brisk missions, scenario variety and a distinct identity. But aging is visible in the practical details—unit selection, pathfinding, exhaustive destruction objectives and occasional difficulty spikes. The remaster makes these games more presentable and accessible on modern displays; it does not make their design timeless for every player.
Metacritic’s critic review page and PC Gamer’s review support that balanced reading. Neither the aggregate score nor the reviews establish personal play experience or comparative performance testing.
