colorui.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called Microsoft Color Control Panel. If Windows reports that colorui.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The file belongs to Windows color-management and Control Panel infrastructure. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, or ordinary third-party application DLL. Microsoft lists it among the Windows system files serviced in supported Windows releases, with separate 32-bit and 64-bit builds.

The names are confusing: System32 contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit files.

The exact version, size, and architecture depend on your Windows release and servicing level. Do not replace one copy with another simply because the filename matches. Microsoft’s documentation identifies Colorui.dll as part of the Windows Color Control Panel component. Microsoft’s security bulletin provides the relevant Windows file and architecture details.
A copy under an application folder is not automatically malicious, but it deserves more scrutiny. Microsoft has documented malware using the colorui.dll filename from unexpected locations, including C:ProgramData. A file outside the normal Windows directories should be scanned before it is restored, trusted, or added to an antivirus exclusion.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates
A failed update, rollback, or incomplete component repair can leave Windows files unavailable or mismatched. Start with Windows Update before running deeper repair commands.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Open the program or Windows feature that produced the
colorui.dllmessage.
If the error remains, continue with the repair sequence below. Microsoft’s Windows Update instructions describe the current update path.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
This is the safest general repair for a missing or damaged Windows copy of colorui.dll. DISM repairs the Windows component store first. SFC then uses that repaired store to check and replace protected system files.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- When DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected program or Windows feature again.
A successful SFC result may say that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. If the error disappears after restarting, no manual DLL replacement is needed.

If DISM reports that source files could not be found, do not copy a random colorui.dll from another computer. Use a matching Windows installation source instead:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with a valid repair source that closely matches the installed Windows version. An arbitrary Windows folder may contain the wrong build and may not repair the component correctly. Microsoft’s repair guidance explains how to use a matching source.

Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software can quarantine a file after detecting corruption, suspicious behavior, or a threat using the same filename. Do not assume the quarantine was a false positive merely because colorui.dll is a legitimate Windows filename.

Windows Security
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open an entry that mentions
colorui.dll. - Check the detected path, threat details, and action taken.
Only consider restoring a quarantined file when its location, signature, and provenance are established. If the file was under an unexpected directory, leave it quarantined and select the available scan option instead.
Run a full scan:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
For a suspicious copy, use Microsoft Defender Offline:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan).
- Select Scan now and save open work first.

After malware removal, run DISM and SFC again. Malware cleanup can leave system files damaged or missing.
Fix 4: Repair the affected application
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
If Windows tools work normally and only one older application reports colorui.dll, the application may have its own damaged files, an incompatible plug-in, or a private copy of the DLL. In that situation, replacing the Windows system file may not solve the application’s problem.
First check whether the Windows copies exist:
- Open File Explorer.
- Enter
%windir%System32in the address bar. - Look for
colorui.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also check
%windir%SysWOW64. - Right-click the file, select Properties, and inspect the Digital Signatures tab if present.
Then repair the affected application using its own official installer:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select its three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data.
- If neither option exists, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from the application developer’s official source.
- Install it again and test it.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET automatically just because a DLL error appears. colorui.dll is a Windows color component, and those runtimes are not the normal source for this file.
Fix 5: Check display drivers only when the timing points there
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
A display-driver update is not a general colorui.dll repair. Consider it when the problem began immediately after a graphics-driver change, occurs while opening display or color-management settings, or affects display-related software.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
If the issue started immediately after an update:
- Return to the device in Device Manager.
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if available.
- Restart Windows.
Use the computer manufacturer’s or graphics-chip manufacturer’s official driver source when Device Manager finds nothing. Do not install a driver package from an untrusted download page.
Manually checking hardware models and driver versions can mean hunting through several manufacturer pages and guessing which package is stale. Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 15–40 minutes
Use System Restore if the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, optimizer cleanup, failed repair, or software installation.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the problem began.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, drivers, registry settings, updates, and programs affected by the restore point. It does not normally remove personal documents, but back up important data first. Microsoft’s System Restore guidance explains the process and limitations.

Do not treat regsvr32 as a universal missing-DLL command.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. A missing, corrupt, or wrong-version Windows component is normally repaired through Windows servicing, DISM, SFC, Windows Update, System Restore, or Windows recovery.
Running this command:
regsvr32 colorui.dll
may produce an error, or it may change registration without restoring the correct protected file. It does not repair the Windows component store, correct architecture mismatches, or replace a damaged dependency. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation explains what the utility actually does.
Do not download colorui.dll from a DLL website
Random DLL repositories can provide:
- Malware disguised with a legitimate filename
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- An unsigned or modified file
- A DLL with incompatible dependencies
- A copy that hides the real Windows corruption
The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM and SFC, matching Windows installation media, System Restore, or a Windows repair installation. Do not copy a downloaded file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder.
If SFC identifies colorui.dll specifically but cannot repair it, Microsoft’s advanced manual replacement procedure requires a verified same-build copy and changes to ownership and permissions. That is a recovery procedure for an experienced administrator, not the first fix. If it still fails, an in-place Windows repair or OEM recovery may be safer.
What the error message means
Common wording includes:
- “The program can’t start because colorui.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “colorui.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading colorui.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “colorui.dll could not be loaded.”
- “colorui.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are examples, not an official Microsoft catalog of every possible message.

“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean colorui.dll itself is absent. The file may exist while one of its dependencies is missing, damaged, blocked, or the wrong architecture. A 32-bit program and a 64-bit program may also be looking in different system locations.

If DISM and SFC still fail
First inspect the SFC result:
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log > "%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"
- Open
sfcdetails.txtfrom the desktop.
If corruption returns, investigate storage health, malware, third-party system cleaners, and failed updates. Back up personal files before escalating.

Is colorui.dll safe?
The genuine Windows component is legitimate, but any file with that name is not automatically safe. Check its path, digital signature, and scan results. An unexpected copy outside the Windows directories should be treated cautiously.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Usually no. colorui.dll is part of Windows color-management infrastructure, not one of those runtime packages.
Is the file version or size supposed to match a website?
No. Windows release, architecture, language, and servicing updates affect the installed metadata. A public inventory is not a substitute for the copy installed on your computer.
