powermigplugin.dll: Identify the Windows Component and Repair It

If Windows reports that powermigplugin.dll is missing, not found, or could not be loaded, the problem usually involves a damaged Windows component rather than a missing game runtime. The safest repair is to restore Windows system files with DISM and SFC instead of downloading an individual DLL.

You may see messages such as:

  • “The program can’t start because powermigplugin.dll is missing from your computer.”
  • “There was a problem starting powermigplugin.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “Error loading powermigplugin.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
  • “The code execution cannot proceed because powermigplugin.dll was not found.”
  • “powermigplugin.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”

The exact wording can vary by Windows version and by the program displaying the message. “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that a dependency of the DLL is missing, not necessarily that the named file alone is absent.

The 60-second answer

powermigplugin.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows DLL associated with the microsoft-windows-power-policy component. Microsoft installation material lists it under that Windows component rather than as a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX file, or separately installed “Power Migration Plugin” application.

Do not download it from a random DLL website or copy an unknown file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, the correct file is restored through Windows servicing. Older Windows 7 and Windows Server installations may contain related files, but public metadata is inconsistent, and there is no single version or architecture that is safe to substitute across releases.

Start with:

  1. Install pending Windows updates.
  2. Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt.
  3. Run SFC.
  4. Restart Windows.
  5. Check Microsoft Defender Protection history if the problem began after a security scan.

Why the error appears

The most likely causes are:

  • A damaged or missing Windows component
  • An incomplete update, upgrade, migration, or repair
  • Antivirus quarantine or removal
  • Malware or an altered system file
  • A damaged Windows installation
  • An old application incorrectly expecting a Windows DLL beside its own executable

Disk cleanup, failed recovery operations, and interrupted updates can expose an existing component problem. The error can also appear when the DLL is present but another required module cannot be loaded.

A file description such as “Power Migration Plugin” does not prove that a standalone Microsoft program with that name is installed. It is a description associated with the Windows component.

Fix 1: Install updates, then repair Windows

This is the correct first repair for a missing or corrupted Windows copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install pending updates

  1. Open Start and select Settings.
  2. Open Windows Update.
  3. Select Check for updates.
  4. Install every applicable update.
  5. Restart when Windows requests it.
  6. Return to Windows Update and check again until no further restart is required.

If Windows Update itself reports corruption, repair the component store before trying the update again.

Run DISM and SFC

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
  4. Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart the computer.

DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files against that repaired store.

If SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupt files, try the program that produced the error again. If SFC reports that it could not repair everything, restart and run the two commands again. You can review detailed servicing results in:

%windir%LogsCBSCBS.log

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing what changed can be tedious. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it finds, while repair actions are performed by the full version; it is optional, and Microsoft’s built-in repair commands remain the primary fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If DISM cannot find repair files

A message saying that source files could not be found means Windows needs a matching repair source.

Microsoft documents this form:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:\serverc$windows /LimitAccess

The source must match the affected Windows installation closely. Do not point DISM at a random Windows folder or an unrelated release. If you do not have matching installation media, use Windows Update first or proceed to an in-place repair installation.

Fix 2: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine

If the error appeared after malware cleanup or an antivirus scan, check whether Windows Security quarantined the file.

  1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
  2. Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Select Protection history.
  4. Review recent actions involving powermigplugin.dll or Windows system files.
  5. Expand an entry to see its status, location, and detection details.

Do not restore the file merely because an application says it is missing. Restore a quarantined item only when its origin and digital signature are trusted. If the item appears suspicious, leave it quarantined, update Defender, and run a Full scan.

If you suspect an active infection:

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Scan options.
  4. Select Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
  5. Save open work and start the scan.

After the scan, run DISM and SFC again. Do not disable antivirus protection or create an exclusion for an arbitrary downloaded DLL.

Fix 3: Verify the file instead of replacing it

If a copy of powermigplugin.dll already exists, verify it before allowing an application to use it.

Check:

  • Its location relative to the Windows installation
  • Its Digital Signatures tab
  • The signing publisher
  • Whether the file appeared after an installer placed it there
  • Whether its architecture matches the application and Windows installation

Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures if that tab is available. A filename alone does not establish authenticity. Public file listings disagree about versions, hashes, architecture, and paths, so do not treat a database entry as Microsoft’s identification of the correct file.

The correct location can vary by Windows build and servicing design. Let component repair restore the file rather than forcing a copy into System32, SysWOW64, or a program directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix 4: Use System Restore after a recent change

System Restore is useful when the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, failed repair, or configuration change.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point created before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Confirm the restore point and select Finish.

System Restore changes system files, settings, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files.

If Windows cannot start normally, enter the Windows Recovery Environment and choose Troubleshoot → Advanced options → System Restore.

Fix 5: Repair a broader driver or hardware problem

powermigplugin.dll is not a driver runtime, so Device Manager is not the normal repair location. Use it only if the same failure began alongside power-management, chipset, storage, or other device errors.

  5. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  6. Restart Windows if prompted.

For a device that began failing after a driver update, open Properties → Driver and use Roll Back Driver when available. Otherwise obtain the driver from the computer or device manufacturer.

Manually hunting through driver versions is often harder than identifying the stale device. Outbyte Driver Updater offers a free scan showing detected driver issues, while driver installation is performed by the full version; it is optional and does not replace repairing Windows with DISM and SFC.

Fix 6: Repair or reset Windows if corruption persists

Use a repair installation when:

  • DISM cannot repair the component store
  • SFC repeatedly reports unrepaired files
  • Windows Update fails because of servicing corruption
  • The error affects several programs or Windows functions
  • The installation is an unsupported or heavily damaged legacy release

Back up important files first. Use installation media that matches the Windows edition and architecture. An in-place repair installation can reinstall Windows while preserving personal files and, depending on the method, applications.

If repair installation is unavailable or unsuccessful:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System → Recovery.
  3. Choose Reset this PC.
  4. Review the options carefully.
  5. Back up personal data before confirming.

Resetting is more disruptive than DISM, SFC, or System Restore. Use it only after less destructive repairs have failed.

What not to do

Do not download a replacement DLL

Random DLL downloads can contain malware, the wrong architecture, or a file from an incompatible Windows release. Even a clean file may not fix the component store, servicing metadata, permissions, or a missing dependency.

Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, matching installation media, or official recovery options instead.

Do not run regsvr32 as a generic repair

Do not use:

regsvr32 powermigplugin.dll

regsvr32 applies to DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal missing-file repair command and may simply return a message that the entry point was not found.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not use Windows Features for this file

Turn Windows features on or off is not a general Windows DLL repair mechanism. Do not enable or disable random features to replace powermigplugin.dll.

When only one old program reports the error

If Windows itself works normally and only one old application shows the message:

  1. Note the exact executable producing the error.
  2. Check Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, and reviewing Windows Logs → Application.
  3. Check Reliability Monitor by searching for it from Start.
  4. Review the application’s installer and update logs.
  5. Repair or reinstall that application using its official installer.
  6. Contact the application’s developer if the program still expects a file that Windows does not provide on that release.

Do not assume the application is entitled to place a Microsoft system DLL beside its executable. If the message says “specified module could not be found” while the file is visible, the application may be loading a missing dependency or using an incompatible architecture.

FAQ

Is powermigplugin.dll part of Windows?

Yes. Microsoft component material places it under the Windows power-policy migration component. It is not established as a standalone “Power Migration Plugin” product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should every Windows 10 or Windows 11 computer contain it?

No universal claim is safe. Its presence depends on the Windows build and installed component set. Do not treat its absence from a particular installation as proof of corruption without checking the originating error and repairing Windows.

Is it a 32-bit or 64-bit file?

Public records conflict, and the correct architecture depends on the Windows component and release. Do not choose a replacement based only on a filename or an online listing.

Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?

No. The correct location and servicing metadata depend on the installation. Use DISM and SFC.

What if the error started after an update?

Install pending updates, restart, and run DISM followed by SFC. If the update clearly triggered the problem, System Restore or Windows recovery options may be appropriate.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if Defender quarantined it?

Review Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history. Restore it only when its provenance and signature are trusted. Otherwise scan the system and repair Windows.

What is the final diagnostic step if Windows will not boot?

Enter Windows Recovery Environment and use Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Command Prompt for offline repair, or use matching installation media. Back up data and consider an in-place repair installation if offline SFC and recovery tools do not resolve the corruption.
