Wizards of the Coast moved all five to the format’s Game Changers list at the same time, so unbanned does not mean they are outside the format’s higher-power deckbuilding conversation.
What changed in Commander
Wizards announced the unbans in its April 22, 2025 Commander Banned and Restricted announcement. The changes took effect that day. The related Commander Brackets Beta update also places each newly legal card on the Game Changers list.
Wizards said the panel considered cards with fond memories, cards that could create positive play patterns or splashy moments, and cards unlikely to produce runaway games or negative play patterns. Those were selection principles, not measured results or a promise that each card will suit every table.
What each unbanned card means for a deck
The panel’s explanations point to different deckbuilding questions: how much setup a card needs, how broadly it fits a deck, and how much it may alter a game. These are qualitative considerations based on the panel’s comments, not ratings of power or format performance.

| Card | What Wizards said | Deckbuilding consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Gifts Ungiven | Wizards cited its strength as a tutor, its time-intensive casting process and the combos it can enable as past concerns. The panel also described fair use as potentially enjoyable for the politics and interplay it creates. | Its role depends heavily on what the deck can do with the cards it finds. Discuss combo expectations and the kind of game you intend to create. |
| Braids, Cabal Minion | The panel acknowledged that an early Braids can leave opponents feeling locked down. It pointed to targeted removal, players’ familiarity with threatening commanders, and the difference between Braids in the 99 or arriving later versus an early commander deployment. | Timing and placement in the deck matter: a commander-led plan can create a different experience from a later appearance in the 99. |
| Coalition Victory | Wizards noted that in a five-color deck it can read like “win if you control your commander,” making it potentially easy to include, but chose to unban it. | Its color identity limits it to five-color decks, where the panel recognized that its condition may be easy to satisfy. |
| Sway of the Stars | The panel described it as a ten-mana reset: impactful, but not especially powerful compared with other expensive spells, and expected to see relatively little play. | Consider whether a costly game reset fits the deck’s plan and your group’s tolerance for a major reset. |
| Panoptic Mirror | Wizards included it among the five unbans and moved it to Game Changers, but gave it less individual discussion than the other named cards. | The announcement does not provide a specific rationale to use as a guide to its expected play pattern. |
Why pregame expectations still matter
Wizards’ comments on Gifts Ungiven and Braids, Cabal Minion make clear that the way a card is used can matter as much as its name. A fair Gifts can invite political choices; a Gifts package built around combos raises different expectations. Braids in the 99 or played later can feel different from an early commander plan that constrains opponents.
Before adding either card, tell the table what role it plays in your deck and how the deck intends to use it. That does not guarantee everyone will enjoy the game, but it gives opponents a chance to assess whether the plan fits the group.

Are the five cards still unbanned?
Wizards’ February 9, 2026 Commander update later unbanned Biorhythm and unbanned Lutri, the Spellchaser with a continuing ban on using Lutri as a companion. The official Banned & Restricted list, checked October 8, 2026, lists Lutri as banned only as a companion. The February update does not report reversing the five April 2025 unbans.
Because format legality can change, check the official list when building or updating a deck rather than relying on an older announcement.
