The PS6 could be up to eight times as powerful as the PS5, according to leak-based reporting—but Sony has not confirmed that figure, and no PS6 game has demonstrated it. Treat “8x” as an unverified upper-bound claim, not a measured prediction of how games will look or run.
Where does the “8x more powerful” claim come from?
Tom’s Guide reported the alleged figure and attributed the underlying claim to leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead. Notebookcheck has also described the figure as leak-based. Neither account makes it an official Sony specification or an independently verified PS6 benchmark. Tom’s Guide’s report and Notebookcheck’s coverage should therefore be read as reporting about a rumor, not confirmation of console performance.
The words “up to” matter: the claim describes a reported ceiling, not necessarily a typical result across games. The available reports do not establish what workload the multiplier refers to or provide a Sony-verified, real-world comparison.
What can be compared with confidence?
Sony has published PS5 hardware specifications, giving readers a firm baseline for the current console. Its 2020 launch announcement lists 16 GB of GDDR6 system memory, while its technical overview describes the PS5’s CPU, memory and video-output capabilities. Those facts tell us about PS5—not about unannounced PS6 hardware. Sony’s PS5 technical specifications and Sony’s PS5 launch details are the official references.

|---|---|---|
| What is established? | Sony-published hardware specifications, including 16 GB of GDDR6 system memory. | No official Sony hardware specification sheet is established by the cited sources. |
| What does the performance evidence show? | Official specifications describe the console; they are not a direct PS6 comparison. | “Up to 8x” is a leak-reported claim, not a demonstrated game result or verified benchmark. |
| How certain is the information? | Official Sony information. | Unverified leak reporting and secondary analysis. |
Does eight times the power mean games will run eight times better?
No. A single performance multiplier does not tell you a game’s frame rate, resolution, image quality or overall experience. Those outcomes depend on what is being measured and how a particular game uses the hardware. Without a confirmed PS6 specification and a like-for-like test, the reported figure cannot be translated into a reliable promise about gameplay.
A detailed-looking rumored specification table does not change that. PS5.media’s 2026 analysis notes that such tables may ultimately trace back to a single unverified leak; presentation and precision are not the same as independent confirmation. Read the PS5.media analysis.

Is there a confirmed PS6 release date?
No launch date is confirmed by the cited sources. Notebookcheck reports a possible manufacturing and launch timeframe, but that timing is also leak-based, not a Sony schedule. Until Sony announces a date, any window should be treated as speculation rather than a firm release plan.
