Yes—if you want a physical, official Commodore-branded C64 experience with modern video, storage, networking and original-style ports. No—if you simply want the cheapest way to play old C64 games. The Commodore 64 Ultimate is a modern FPGA recreation, not a newly manufactured 1980s C64 with original silicon.
That distinction explains both its appeal and its price. It is a remarkably complete enthusiast computer, but it is not automatically better value than an emulator, a C64 Mini, a restored original machine or an Ultimate 64.

What the Commodore 64 Ultimate actually is
The revived Commodore brand is selling a new hardware implementation of the C64 architecture. Commodore describes the machine as reproducing the original computer at chip level, but the hardware is built around an AMD Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA, modern memory and contemporary interfaces. It is therefore best described as an official Commodore-branded FPGA recreation.

It is also more than a software emulator running inside a general-purpose computer: FPGA logic recreates the machine’s hardware behavior while the surrounding system adds modern storage, networking and display options.
#1 Best Overall
- High definition output at 720p via HDMI
- Pixel Perfect display, with US/Europe display modes and crt filter options
- Save game function. Supports software updates via USB flash drive
- 2 USB ports: plug in a USB keyboard and use as a fully functional home computer, or add a second joystick for 2-player games

Models and current pricing
Commodore’s store currently lists C64 Ultimate and C64C Ultimate variants in roughly the $299.99–$499.99 range, depending on edition and configuration. Treat the live store as the authority for the exact price, availability, shipping destination, taxes and checkout total.
- BASIC Beige: the entry-level styling, without the decorative lighting features.
- Starlight Edition: translucent styling and configurable lighting.
- Founders Edition: collector-focused presentation, including gold branding and special packaging.
- C64C Ultimate: the later slimline case design.
Early launch coverage described preorder tiers around $299, $349 and $499, while later review coverage placed the standard model at $349.99 and the Founders Edition near $549.99. Those launch and review prices should not be confused with today’s store listings. Collector editions change the presentation more than the underlying C64 experience, so the standard model is the sensible choice for most buyers.

What you get for the money
The machine combines a period-style computer with features that would have been impossible or impractical on an original C64:
- AMD Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA and 128 MB of DDR2 RAM.
- A 66-key mechanical keyboard using the original C64 layout.
- HDMI output, listed for 1080p use with PAL and NTSC refresh rates.
- USB-A and USB-C, microSD support, Ethernet and built-in Wi-Fi.
- Headphone and optical audio connections.
- Two DB-9 joystick and paddle ports.
- Cartridge, Datasette and IEC disk-drive connectors.
- Integrated Ultimate-II+ functionality for disk and tape-style workflows.
The package is described as including the computer, a worldwide 12V power supply, HDMI cable, documentation and a cassette-style USB storage device containing software. However, available descriptions disagree about the storage capacity and included-title count: official listings refer to a 128 MB USB cassette with more than 100 titles, while earlier reporting described a 64 GB cassette with more than 50 games. Check the specification for the particular edition or production batch rather than assuming one figure applies to every unit.
Commodore also promotes a library of more than 10,000 classic games, but that marketing claim does not mean every title is bundled with every edition. Included software, licensed games, homebrew, demos, public-domain programs and user-supplied images are separate categories. Use legally obtained software and observe rights-holder restrictions.

FPGA accuracy is not the same as original hardware
The Ultimate’s FPGA design is a strong fit for buyers who want hardware-level C64 behavior without maintaining forty-year-old electronics. Commodore claims greater than 99.9% cartridge compatibility. That is a manufacturer specification claim, not a guarantee that every unusual cartridge, copy-protection method, timing-sensitive program, expansion or peripheral will behave exactly like it does on an original machine.

- Commodore C64 Uppercase Letter & Commodore Blue / Red
- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
Compatibility should therefore be understood as broad, not magical. The system is designed to support original cartridges, joysticks, disk drives and Datasette hardware, as well as common image formats including .D64, .D71, .D81, .G64, .T64, .TAP, .PRG and .ROM. It also lists ISO-9660 support.
Original accessories may still require cleaning, repair, replacement cables or adapters. The user port is internal, and Commodore sells an adapter for external access. CRT users should separately verify the appropriate analog cable; HDMI support does not make every vintage display connection plug-and-play. On a modern television, confirm that the selected PAL or NTSC signal and the display’s scaling behavior are acceptable.
What using it feels like
Specifications do not fully capture the product’s character. In its hands-on review, TechRadar found strong visual similarity to the original, support for old games and accessories, BASIC capability, network access and game transfer. The review also found a menu system with considerable depth and a learning curve caused by the old-style interface and keyboard conventions.
Loading is faster than with an original disk or tape setup, but the machine intentionally retains some C64-style behavior. That is part of the appeal for enthusiasts and part of the frustration for people expecting a modern console. The Ultimate is not simply a menu that launches a curated list of games. It exposes the computer underneath: files, media formats, configuration, display modes, BASIC and hardware-style workflows.
This creates three different kinds of authenticity:
- Nostalgia authenticity: the case, keyboard layout, sound, graphics and familiar C64 environment.
- Technical authenticity: FPGA-based reproduction and extensive compatibility with C64 software and hardware.
- Convenience: HDMI, USB, networking, memory-card support and integrated disk/tape functionality.
It does not provide modern-computer convenience. There is no conventional desktop operating system, modern game storefront or expectation that every task will be self-explanatory.
Who should buy it?
The strongest candidates are former C64 owners who want a reliable replacement, collectors who specifically want official Commodore hardware, programmers interested in BASIC and homebrew, and retrocomputing enthusiasts who want to connect original joysticks, cartridges or disk equipment without assembling a system from separate parts.
It also makes sense for someone who wants a physical computer rather than an emulator window. The mechanical keyboard, original layout and legacy connectors give it a substantially different feel from a small retro console.
Best Value
- Inspired by the classics. Compatible with Windows 10(1903) or above, and Android 9.0 or above.
- Programmable keys, Dual Super Buttons, and Super Stick, with independent control panel.
- 87 keys. Top mount style with Kailh Box White Switches.
- Double-Shot ABS keycaps with SA profile. (C64 Edition only)
- Hot-swappable PCB. Support n-key rollover.
It is a weak choice for someone who has never used a C64 and only wants to play a few famous games. It is also a poor fit for anyone expecting modern graphics, instant loading, online multiplayer or a normal operating system. If your real requirement is “play old games as cheaply as possible,” spending $300 or more on an enthusiast computer is difficult to justify.

| Priority | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest-cost access to C64 games | VICE | Software emulation can cost nothing if you already own a computer. |
| Simple console-like experience | TheC64 or C64 Mini | Easier and generally cheaper, but less complete and less expandable. |
| Official modern C64 | Commodore 64 Ultimate | Physical keyboard, official branding, HDMI, networking and original-style ports. |
| Original chips and historical authenticity | Restored vintage C64 | Only original hardware provides the original silicon, but age brings repair and display challenges. |
| FPGA depth and customization | Ultimate 64 | A well-established specialist platform, though sourcing a board, case and accessories may require more effort. |
| Raspberry Pi-based dedicated setup | BMC64 | Flexible and inexpensive for users comfortable assembling and configuring a system. |
A vintage C64 remains the right choice if original circuitry is the point and you are prepared for aging capacitors, failing chips, obsolete video connections and unreliable disk drives. The Ultimate 64 may suit technically confident buyers who want FPGA capability without paying for official Commodore branding or a complete retail package. TheC64 and C64 Mini are better for newcomers who want a straightforward games device. VICE and BMC64 win when cost, flexibility or experimentation matters more than owning a finished official product.
A practical buying checklist
- Decide whether you want a computer or a console. If you will use BASIC, homebrew, original media or peripherals, the Ultimate’s extra capability matters. If you will launch a handful of games, it probably does not.
- Choose the standard edition unless presentation is important. Starlight and Founders models primarily add styling and collector value.
- Check the live listing. Confirm whether your chosen model is in stock, a preorder or backordered, and verify shipping, taxes, import charges and return terms.
- Inventory your accessories. Confirm whether your joysticks, cartridge hardware, drive, Datasette, CRT cable or user-port equipment needs repair or an adapter.
- Set expectations about compatibility. The official claim is broad, but unusual hardware and timing-sensitive software deserve caution.
- Use legal software images. The included library is not a license for every C64 game ever released.
Verdict
Buy the standard Commodore 64 Ultimate if you specifically want a polished, physical and official modern C64. Its combination of FPGA reproduction, mechanical keyboard, HDMI, USB, networking, modern storage and original-style ports makes it far more complete than a typical mini console.

The revived C64 is compelling precisely because it is not trying to be a modern console. It preserves the old computer’s constraints while removing many of its maintenance problems. Whether that is worth roughly $300 or more depends less on how many games it includes than on whether you want to own and use a C64 as a computer.
