If No Man’s Sky ignores your controller on Steam for Windows, the fastest official fix is to restart Steam and apply the game’s official controller layout. First confirm which platform you use: Steam, Xbox app/Game Pass, Epic Games Store, or console. Steam’s controller-layout steps do not automatically apply to the other versions.
Quick fix for No Man’s Sky on Steam
Hello Games’ documented Steam fix is:
- Exit No Man’s Sky.
- Restart the Steam client completely.
- Launch No Man’s Sky.
- Open Controller Layout. Steam’s current wording or menu position may vary by client version.
- Select the currently active layout.
- Under Recommended, choose Official Configuration for No Man’s Sky for the connected controller.
- Select Apply Layout.
- Back out of the layout screen and relaunch the game.
This is the official first-line remedy for the Steam PC edition because Steam may not pick up the correct bindings until its client has been restarted. See Hello Games’ Steam controller support article.

First identify where the failure occurs
There are three separate possibilities:
- The controller is not detected by Windows: troubleshoot the cable, USB port, Bluetooth pairing, battery, firmware, or hardware.
- Windows detects it but Steam does not: check Steam’s controller settings and test the device there.
- Steam detects it but No Man’s Sky does not respond: prioritize the official layout, Steam Input settings, launch order, and conflicting input software.
This distinction prevents you from changing game settings when the controller is not reaching the computer at all.
If Steam does not detect the controller
Test a wired connection first
- Use a known data-capable USB cable. Some cables charge but do not transmit data.
- Try another USB port, preferably directly on the computer rather than through a hub.
- Disconnect and reconnect the controller before starting Steam.
- Test the controller in another game or Windows’ controller test interface.
Microsoft recommends trying another cable or port and connecting input devices directly when diagnosing Windows controller problems. Its Windows 11 controller guide provides platform-specific connection guidance.

Re-pair Bluetooth
- Charge the controller.
- Remove its existing Bluetooth pairing from Windows.
- Put the controller into pairing mode and pair it with the PC again.
- Make sure it is not connected to a nearby console, phone, or tablet.
- Toggle Bluetooth off and on, or restart the PC.
- Test with USB. If USB works and Bluetooth does not, the problem is likely wireless pairing, power, interference, or a Bluetooth-driver issue.
Sony notes that a PlayStation controller can be paired with only one device at a time and must be paired again when changing devices. See PlayStation’s PC controller support page.
Check Steam’s controller test
In Steam, open the controller settings or Big Picture controller settings. Confirm that the device appears under detected controllers, then test its buttons and sticks. Where available, run calibration or input tests.
If Steam cannot see the controller, return to USB, Bluetooth, Windows, or hardware troubleshooting. Steam’s controller troubleshooting page includes detection, calibration, configuration, and Steam Overlay guidance. UI labels can differ between Steam client versions.

Apply the official layout again
Restart Steam even if the controller already appears in Steam. Then open the game’s Controller Layout, select the active layout, choose the recommended Official Configuration for No Man’s Sky for your controller family, and select Apply Layout.
Launch the game with the intended controller already connected. If you unplug or pair the controller after launching, close the game, restart Steam, and apply the layout again.

A/B-test Steam’s per-game controller override
Steam’s controller setting is not a universal “on” or “off” fix. Open No Man’s Sky → Properties → Controller and test the available override options, including:
- Use default settings
- A setting that enables or forces Steam Input
- A setting that disables Steam Input, where shown
Restart the game after each change. Steam Input can translate PlayStation or generic-controller input into a layout the game understands, but forcing it when the game already handles the controller natively can cause double input, wrong prompts, or missing functions. Community reports describe both forced Steam Input and returning to default settings fixing different cases, so treat this as an A/B test rather than a universal rule. Remove competing devices and software
For one test session, disconnect other gamepads, steering wheels, flight sticks, HOTAS devices, and virtual controllers. Temporarily close controller-remapping tools and overlays, then restart Steam and launch No Man’s Sky with only the intended controller connected.
This is isolation testing, not proof that a particular program is incompatible. A second physical or virtual device may become the active input device, while an overlay or remapper may intercept buttons before the game receives them.
Controller-specific checks
Xbox controllers
Try USB first, then Bluetooth or an Xbox wireless adapter. Confirm that Windows and Steam receive button input before changing No Man’s Sky’s layout. A controller with native Windows/XInput support is generally the simplest replacement path if the existing device has a repeatable hardware fault, but buying another controller will not fix a Steam binding problem.

DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4
On Steam, the simplest route is usually to connect the controller, confirm Steam detects it, and select the appropriate official No Man’s Sky configuration. Try USB before Bluetooth so that pairing and battery issues are removed from the diagnosis.
Sony lists DualSense, DualSense Edge, and DUALSHOCK 4 among its PC-supported controllers, but features vary by game and connection method. Do not assume that adaptive triggers, haptics, gyro, speaker, or touchpad behavior will work identically in every No Man’s Sky PC setup.
Generic, 8BitDo, Nintendo-layout, and third-party controllers
Check which operating mode the controller is using. XInput, DirectInput, Bluetooth, and keyboard-emulation modes can appear as different devices and may require different layouts. Select the official profile when available; use a custom layout only after confirming that the controller is detected.
Keyboard-emulation layouts can provide a fallback for unusual devices, but they may produce incorrect button prompts and incomplete analog or vibration behavior. For replacement options, the official 8BitDo store and its wired-controller collection are starting points, but check the exact model’s Windows mode and compatibility rather than assuming all models behave alike.

Fixes for Xbox app/Game Pass and Epic Games Store
The Hello Games article linked above is specifically for Steam. Xbox app/Game Pass and Epic users should not expect to find Steam’s Controller Layout menu or per-game Steam override.
- Test the controller in Windows and another game from the same launcher.
- Use USB first.
- Update Windows and controller firmware through the manufacturer’s supported tools where applicable.
- Fully close and relaunch the Xbox app, Epic Games Launcher, and No Man’s Sky.
- Disconnect other controllers and remapping software.
- Try another known-working controller.
If the controller works elsewhere but fails only in No Man’s Sky, report the reproducible issue to Hello Games rather than applying Steam-specific fixes. The same principle applies to third-party launchers: detection and bindings are handled by that platform’s input path, not Steam’s.
Console troubleshooting
Steam Input does not exist on Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch. For a console copy of No Man’s Sky:
- Check whether the controller works in the console dashboard and another game.
- Reconnect or re-pair it.
- Fully quit No Man’s Sky instead of resuming a suspended session.
- Restart the console.
- Install available console and controller updates.
- Try another controller to separate a game issue from hardware failure.
If the controller works in other games but not No Man’s Sky, submit the issue to Hello Games with the console model, controller model, game version, and steps that reproduce it.

No input at the title screen
This usually points toward connection, Steam detection, focus, Steam Input, or the wrong active device. Test with one controller connected, restart Steam, and apply the official layout.

Menus work but gameplay or flight controls do not
A partial or incorrect layout may have bindings for menus but not every gameplay context. Reapply the official configuration. If the problem affects only flight, vehicles, or another mode, note that distinction in a support report rather than assuming the controller is entirely undetected.
Only some buttons or sticks work
Check the controller mode, profile, calibration, and physical hardware. Steam may detect the device while a damaged button, stick, cable, or wireless connection affects only particular inputs.
The game shows the wrong button prompts
Wrong glyphs do not necessarily mean that input has failed. The game may be receiving translated Steam Input commands while displaying another controller family’s symbols. Recheck the selected profile and Steam Input override.

Last-resort steps
- Restart the PC or console.
- Update the operating system and controller firmware.
- Verify the game files through the relevant PC launcher.
- Test another controller and another game.
- Reinstall the game only after the connection, detection, layout, and conflict checks fail.
Do not begin by deleting configuration files, editing the registry, or running command-line repairs. Those steps are not part of Hello Games’ documented first-line Steam fix, and community file-deletion advice is not an established universal remedy. If you do experiment with advanced configuration changes, back up saves and settings first.
When to contact Hello Games
Submit a support or bug report when the controller:
- Works in Windows and other games;
- Appears correctly in Steam, if you use Steam;
- Still fails after restarting Steam and applying the official No Man’s Sky layout;
- Fails only in No Man’s Sky; or
- Developed the problem immediately after a game update.
Include your platform and storefront, controller model, wired or Bluetooth connection, whether Steam detects it, whether keyboard and mouse still work, when the problem began, and every troubleshooting step already attempted. Add screenshots or a short recording when possible. Use Hello Games’ support entry point where appropriate.
