Exit code 137 means the operating system forcibly killed the Minecraft server, usually because it ran out of available memory. Exit code 1 is a generic startup or runtime failure: the code alone does not identify the cause, so the first real error in the console or crash report is your starting point. In both cases, verify that the Java version matches your Minecraft release before changing memory or reinstalling anything.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Java servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
What a Minecraft server exit code tells you
An exit code is the status returned when the Java process stops. It is a clue, not a complete diagnosis. The server log, crash report, operating-system messages and the exact server software (vanilla, Paper, Forge, Fabric or another distribution) provide the evidence needed to fix it.

If a panel reports code 0 while players were disconnected, look for a scheduled stop, a stop command, an update task or a host restart rather than a Java crash.
- Exit code 137: on Linux, this is the conventional numeric result of a process terminated by signal 9,
SIGKILL. The operating system or a container manager ended Java abruptly. - Exit code 1: a general failure status used for many startup, configuration, mod, plugin and file problems. It has no single fix.
Do not treat the number as the first line of the diagnosis. Record the complete console output, the time of the stop, the Minecraft version, the Java version and any change made immediately beforehand. That information prevents a memory problem from being mistaken for a broken JAR, or a Java mismatch from being “fixed” by adding RAM.
A fast triage procedure
- Save the evidence. Copy the console from startup through shutdown. Also inspect the newest file in the
crash-reportsdirectory and the end oflogs/latest.log. Preserve the original before restarting repeatedly, because a later run can overwrite the useful context. - Check the Java runtime used by the server. Run
java -versionin the same account and startup environment that launches the server. A control panel can select a different Java binary from the one in your interactive shell, so verify the panel’s runtime setting as well. - Write down the exact server build. Record the Minecraft release, loader (vanilla, Forge or Fabric), server implementation and mod or plugin pack version. Compatibility is release-specific; “latest Java” is not automatically correct for every older pack.
- Classify the stop. An abrupt stop with no Java stack trace points toward code 137 or another external termination. A readable exception, an
UnsupportedClassVersionError, a missing-file message or an explicit mod failure generally points toward code 1 or a Java/runtime mismatch. - Check resources while the server is running. On Linux,
free -hshows available memory anddf -hshows disk space. In a hosting panel, inspect the allocation limit and the usage graph. On Windows, use Task Manager’s Memory and Performance views. Leave headroom for the operating system, the panel, backups and other services. - Undo the most recent change. Temporarily remove a newly installed mod or plugin, restore the previous configuration, or launch the last known-good server JAR. Change one variable at a time so the successful change is identifiable.
Exit code 137: the server was killed with SIGKILL
What 137 means
Linux commonly reports 137 when a process receives signal 9 (SIGKILL). A killed JVM may not have time to write a normal Java exception, shutdown message or crash report. That differs from a Java heap exhaustion that reaches the JVM itself, which normally produces an OutOfMemoryError stack trace. Therefore, an empty or abruptly cut-off log does not rule out memory pressure; it is often a sign that the operating system or hosting container stopped Java first.

Some hosting panels display an “Out of Memory” indicator when this happens, but panel wording varies. Treat the operating-system or container event as stronger evidence than a label in the dashboard.
Typical causes of 137
- The allocation is genuinely too small. The Java heap, native JVM memory, loaded libraries and the rest of the machine all draw from the limit. A heap setting that appears to fit on paper can still leave no room for the operating system.
- A leak in a mod or plugin. Memory usage grows over hours or days until the host limit is reached. A restart temporarily clears the symptom but does not remove the cause.
- Excessive view or simulation distance. Higher distances keep more chunks active and increase entity, lighting and ticking work. Hosting guidance commonly recommends testing values around 6–8 while diagnosing, then increasing them only if usage remains safe.
- Large entity or item populations. Mob farms, dropped-item piles, villagers and other persistent entities can create a sudden load, especially after players enter a previously unexplored or neglected area.
- Competing processes. Backups, map rendering, antivirus scans, databases or another server can consume memory even when the Minecraft heap setting has not changed.
Fix 137 in a safe order
- Confirm the limit and the timing. Compare the server’s memory graph with the moment of termination. If usage reaches the cap, increasing the allocation may be appropriate; if it climbs steadily between restarts, investigate a leak before buying more memory.
- Leave operating-system headroom. Do not assign every available gigabyte to
-Xmx. The JVM needs native memory, and the operating system needs room for services and filesystem caching. A host that kills the container at its limit will still produce 137 even when the heap itself has not reached its maximum. - Reduce workload temporarily. Set view distance and simulation distance to about 6–8, stop heavy farms, clear unneeded item piles and avoid generating new terrain until the server remains stable. Make one adjustment at a time and observe several normal play sessions.
- Use an appropriate JVM configuration. Hosting documentation often recommends Aikar’s flags for supported Minecraft server versions. Treat those flags as a version- and workload-specific preset, not a universal cure; apply a documented set for your Java and server build rather than mixing fragments from unrelated guides.
- Measure suspected leaks. The Spark profiler can show memory growth and identify plugins, mods or activities associated with it. Capture a profile while the server is healthy and another as usage rises, then disable or update the component that correlates with the growth.
- Increase RAM only after the workload is understood. More memory helps when the server simply lacks capacity. It only delays a leak-driven crash, and it can make garbage-collection pauses longer if the underlying problem remains.
- Check non-Minecraft processes. Stop overlapping backups or services, and review the host’s container, cgroup or system event log for an out-of-memory kill. If the log shows another process consumed the memory, changing Minecraft settings alone will not solve the incident.
How to distinguish 137 from a Java heap error
Look for the evidence that survived the stop. A JVM-managed heap failure usually leaves java.lang.OutOfMemoryError and a stack trace. A 137 termination often ends in the middle of a line, has no Java exception and is accompanied by an out-of-memory event in the host or operating system. Both can involve insufficient memory, but the remedies differ: a heap error may require tuning allocations or a leaking component, while 137 requires addressing the external limit and total process usage.

Exit code 1: find the first real error
Code 1 is a wrapper around failure, not a diagnosis. The useful message is normally earlier in the console or in the crash report. Start at the first exception or explicit “failed to” line, not the final line that merely says the server exited.
Missing, misnamed or damaged server JAR
Check that the startup command points to the file that actually exists. A panel may still reference an old filename after an update, or a download may be incomplete. Confirm the JAR’s name and location, restore a known-good copy for the same Minecraft release, and update the startup command only after verifying the file. For a modpack, reinstall the Forge, Fabric or custom server package if its libraries or launch files are incomplete.

Plugin, mod or configuration failure
A newly added or updated component is a strong suspect when the server worked previously. Read the first stack trace, note the named mod or plugin, and test with that component removed in a backup copy of the world. Check dependency and loader versions, then restore components in small groups. A malformed configuration can produce the same code; compare the changed file with a default generated by the same server build and correct syntax errors rather than deleting the whole configuration blindly.
EULA and first-run setup
A fresh server may stop because the Minecraft EULA has not been accepted. Open eula.txt, read the linked agreement, set eula=true only if you accept it, save the file and start the server again. If the setting reverts, check file permissions and whether the panel is regenerating the directory you edited.

Java runtime mismatch
An incompatible runtime can fail before the world loads. An UnsupportedClassVersionError identifies a class compiled for a newer Java release than the one running the server. Select the required Java binary in the panel or startup script, then verify with java -version. Do not assume that installing a new JDK changes the Java used by an existing service; the service may still reference an older executable.
Java versions required by Minecraft server releases
The Minecraft Wiki’s server requirements and Java-update guidance establish the version ranges below. The baseline is Java 8 or newer, but the release-specific requirement overrides that baseline. A JDK includes a JRE and can run a server; a separate JRE is not required when the JDK is correctly selected.

| Minecraft Java Edition server | Java version reported as required | Practical qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 1.8 through 1.16.5 | Java 8 | Java 11 often works; Forge modpacks are safest on Java 8 unless the pack documents another runtime. |
| 1.17 through 1.17.1 | Java 16 or newer | Use a runtime supported by the specific server build and mod loader. |
| 1.18 through 1.20.4 | Java 17 or newer | Java 17 is the established baseline for this range. |
| 1.20.5 through 1.21.x | Java 21 | Confirm the exact release and loader before switching an established modded installation. |
| 26.x | Java 25 in some third-party guides | This requirement was not confirmed on the official wiki page consulted; verify it against current official release documentation before upgrading. |
Modded servers can diverge from vanilla requirements. Forge packs, and sometimes Paper-based setups or plugins, may require a different Java release. The safest rule is to follow the server or modpack’s stated minimum, or the next appropriate long-term-support release when its documentation permits it. Java requirements change as Minecraft releases change, so re-check the current server requirements when upgrading.
Changing Java without breaking the server
Windows
- Install the required 64-bit Java release for the server and mod loader.
- Open the server launch script and replace an old absolute path, such as a path to
java.exe, with the intended installation, or update the panel’s Java selector. - Run
java -versionfrom the same terminal or service account used to launch the server. - Start once, confirm the version in the console, and stop cleanly before allowing players back in.
Linux
- Install the required Java package using your distribution’s supported package manager.
- Check
which javaandjava -version; a service account can resolve a different binary from your own shell. - Use the full path to the intended Java executable in the systemd unit, container definition or launch script when more than one version is installed.
- Reload the service definition, start the server and inspect the startup log for the selected runtime before changing any other setting.
Keep a backup of the world and configuration before changing Java. A runtime switch can expose an old mod or plugin incompatibility that was hidden by the previous environment; that is a compatibility issue to resolve, not evidence that memory settings are wrong.
Recovery checklist by symptom
| Observed symptom | Most useful next check | First corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| 137 with an abruptly truncated log | Host or operating-system memory events and the usage graph | Reduce workload, leave headroom and investigate leaks before raising the limit. |
| 137 after players load a busy area | Entity counts, farms, item piles and distance settings | Lower view/simulation distance to about 6–8 and remove abnormal entity buildup. |
| 137 after many hours, followed by a temporary recovery on restart | Memory trend and Spark profiles | Identify and update, reconfigure or remove the leaking mod or plugin. |
| Code 1 immediately after installing a server | EULA file, JAR path and first console exception | Accept the EULA if appropriate and verify the server JAR and startup command. |
| Code 1 after a mod or plugin update | First stack trace and loader/dependency versions | Roll back the changed component, then install a compatible build. |
UnsupportedClassVersionError |
Java version used by the actual service | Select the Java release required by the Minecraft version and confirm with java -version. |
Preventing repeat crashes
- Pin the Minecraft, loader, mod and plugin versions that are known to work together; do not update several layers at once.
- Keep automated backups, but schedule them outside peak play when possible and monitor their memory and disk impact.
- Set conservative view and simulation distances first, then raise them only after observing real memory use.
- Watch entity-heavy farms and periodically remove abandoned item piles.
- Record the Java version, heap settings and server build in an administrator note so a replacement host can reproduce the environment.
- After every change, let the server run through a normal play session and review the log rather than declaring success after a single clean start.
The durable fix is the one that matches the evidence: provide more capacity for a genuinely undersized server, remove the component responsible for a leak, correct the Java runtime for a version mismatch, or repair the exact file or configuration named by the first error. Exit code 137 tells you who stopped the process; exit code 1 tells you only that something failed.
