“The program can’t start because commutil.dll is missing from your computer,” “The specified module could not be found,” and “The code execution cannot proceed because commutil.dll was not found” are common forms of this error. commutil.dll is reported as a Garena Common Utilities component, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the Garena game or launcher that installed it, not to copy a replacement into Windows.
The 60-second answer
commutil.dll is not established as a Windows system file. Public file indexes associate it with Garena Online and describe it as Common Utilities, but no current official Garena package for this DLL was located as a standalone download.

- Identify the Garena game or launcher that fails.
- Run its built-in repair or file-verification option.
- Check Windows Security quarantine.
- If repair fails, uninstall and reinstall the affected Garena component from its official distribution.
- Investigate dependencies, architecture, and duplicate installations.
- Run DISM and SFC only as secondary Windows checks.
Do not download commutil.dll from a random DLL site or place it in C:WindowsSystem32.
What commutil.dll belongs to
The filename is associated in public indexes with Common Utilities and Garena Online. Those records report a 32-bit application DLL, along with version, size, and hash details, but they are not authenticated Garena release manifests. Treat that metadata as identification evidence, not as a guarantee that every Garena installation uses the same build.

No specific current Garena game can be confirmed as the only program that loads the file. The affected executable and its installation directory matter. Older Garena-based games, launchers, or partially updated installations may have different layouts.
This file is also easy to confuse with similarly named components:
cmutil.dllis associated with Microsoft Connection Manager Utility and is a different file.gxxmiscutil.dllis separately listed as Garena Common Utilities and should not be substituted forcommutil.dll.- A file with the right name but the wrong architecture or version can still fail to load.
What the error actually means
The wording helps narrow the cause, but it does not identify the cause by itself.
- “commutil.dll is missing” usually means the file is absent from the application’s expected directory.
- “The specified module could not be found” can mean that
commutil.dllis present but one of its dependent DLLs is missing. - “Not designed to run on Windows” often points to corruption, an incompatible build, or a 32-bit and 64-bit mismatch.
- “There was a problem starting commutil.dll” can follow a damaged file, blocked file, failed update, or dependency problem.
Windows searches the application directory and other locations according to its DLL search order. That is why copying an application-private DLL to a system folder often does nothing, and can create a different loading or security problem.
Fix 1: Repair the Garena launcher or game
Repair is the best first step because it restores the complete application component, rather than treating one DLL as an isolated file.
Use the launcher’s repair option
- Close the game and Garena launcher completely.
- Open the Garena launcher from the Start menu.
- Look for Repair, Verify, Check files, or a settings menu associated with the affected game.
- Start the repair or verification process.
- Wait for it to finish. Do not interrupt it while files are being downloaded or replaced.
- Restart Windows.
- Launch the game again from the repaired launcher.
Older launchers may expose repair through a wrench or spanner icon. The exact control is not present in every current Garena product, so do not assume that a missing repair button indicates a Windows problem.
Success looks like: the launcher reports that verification or repair completed, and the game starts without the commutil.dll message.

If the launcher cannot repair the installation, continue with a clean reinstall.
Uninstall and reinstall the affected component
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for the Garena launcher or the specific Garena game that fails.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Uninstall, then complete the prompts.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the launcher or game again from Garena’s official distribution.
- Install it to a normal local folder with sufficient free space.
- Start the launcher once using Run as administrator if the installer or updater reports permission errors.
- Allow the launcher to update before starting the game.
If the uninstaller leaves an old game directory behind, do not immediately delete it if it contains saved games or configuration files. Rename the old folder first, then install to a clean location. A duplicate installation can cause the shortcut to launch an older executable that still expects a different copy of commutil.dll.
Success looks like: the newly installed application contains its own required files in its application directory and launches normally. The file should not need to be copied into a Windows system directory.
Fix 2: Check whether Windows Security quarantined it
A security scan or application update may remove or quarantine a file. This is plausible when the error began immediately after an antivirus scan, cleanup, or launcher update.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections around the time the error began.
- Open any entry that identifies the Garena installation.
- Check the original path, detection name, and affected file.
Do not restore the file merely because its name matches. Microsoft warns that restoring unsafe content can expose the computer. Confirm that the original path belongs to the Garena installation and that the application came from an official source.
The safer recovery is usually to reinstall the affected Garena component. If Windows Security repeatedly removes the file after a clean official installation, leave the file quarantined, run a full scan, and contact the application publisher with the detection details.
For a deeper check:
- In Virus & threat protection, select Scan options.
- Run Full scan.
- If malware remains suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan and follow the restart prompt.
Fix 3: Check the application path, architecture, and dependencies
If commutil.dll exists but still will not load, the problem may not be a missing file.

Confirm the file’s location
- Right-click the Garena shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab and note the Target path.
- Choose Open File Location.
- Look for
commutil.dllin the same application directory or in the subfolder used by the affected executable.
Do not move the file simply to make the error disappear. If it is in an unrelated download folder, a Windows system folder, or another game’s directory, remove the manually copied version and reinstall the application.
Consider 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Public indexes report commutil.dll as a 32-bit file. That does not prove that every Garena build uses the same architecture, and it does not make an arbitrary 32-bit download safe. A 32-bit application normally needs its compatible 32-bit dependencies, while a 64-bit application needs compatible 64-bit components.
If a manually copied DLL is present:
- Close the launcher and game.
- Remove the copied file from the application directory if it did not come from the official installation.
- Run the Garena repair process again, or reinstall the application.
- Avoid mixing files from different Garena games or releases.
Check for a missing dependency
“Module could not be found” can mean that a dependency of commutil.dll is absent. A dependency-analysis utility can help identify the missing module, but use it for diagnosis rather than downloading individual DLLs from unknown sources.
Record:
- The exact error text.
- The executable that fails.
- The full path to that executable.
- Whether
commutil.dllexists and where. - Whether Windows Security quarantined anything.
- The application’s apparent 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Any error in Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application.
This evidence is more useful than repeatedly replacing the same filename.
Fix 4: Install runtimes only when the error names them
commutil.dll is not supplied by Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET. Installing every runtime package is unlikely to restore a missing Garena-private file.
Use these checks only when the error specifically identifies the component:
- For a Visual C++ runtime error, install the matching Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. The application architecture must match the package architecture.
- For a legacy DirectX component error, use Microsoft’s DirectX End-User Runtime. It does not install
commutil.dll. - For a .NET runtime error, use Microsoft’s official .NET downloads.
Do not use Windows Features to enable unrelated components as a general DLL repair. Open Start > Settings > Optional features > More Windows features only when the error or the application’s documentation identifies a missing Windows feature.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components as a secondary check
Because commutil.dll is associated with an application rather than established as a Windows system DLL, DISM and SFC normally will not recreate it. They are still useful when Windows itself is behaving abnormally or multiple system components are failing.
First install pending Windows updates:
- Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends DISM before SFC. Restart after both commands and test the Garena application.
Success looks like: DISM completes without an unrepaired error, SFC reports that it repaired or found no integrity violations, and other Windows component problems stop occurring. If the Garena error remains, return to repair or reinstalling the application.
Manually hunting through Windows components and repeating DISM or SFC without knowing what changed can be time-consuming. A graphics or device driver is not a normal source of a missing commutil.dll file. Update drivers only if Event Viewer, the game, or Device Manager identifies a driver failure.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand the device category named in the error, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device and choose Properties.
- Read the Device status message under General.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and version.
- Use Update driver, or download the driver from the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
Do not use Device Manager to replace commutil.dll, and do not expect a driver update to restore a Garena application file.

Why System32 and regsvr32 are usually wrong
Do not copy commutil.dll to C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 by default. Those folders are not general-purpose storage for application DLLs, and changing them can affect DLL search behavior and security.
Do not run:
regsvr32 commutil.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a COM registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. There is no public evidence that commutil.dll is a COM server. The command may simply return that the entry point was not found, and it will not repair a damaged Garena installation.

When System Restore is appropriate
Use System Restore only when the error began after a known recent update, cleanup, or software change and a suitable restore point exists.

- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs.
- Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can undo later applications, settings, and updates. It should not replace reinstalling the Garena component when the installation itself is damaged.
FAQ
Is commutil.dll part of Windows?
No reliable evidence establishes it as a Windows system DLL. Available public records associate it with Garena’s application software.
Can I download only commutil.dll?
That is unsafe and usually incomplete. The file may be the wrong build or architecture, and the actual problem may be a missing dependency or damaged launcher. Repair or reinstall the Garena application instead.
Why does the message say “module could not be found” when the file exists?
Windows may be unable to find a dependency required by commutil.dll. Corruption, architecture conflicts, and incorrect application paths can produce the same wording.
